Freezing a supermarket loaf?

unfriendlyfriend · 17/04/2020 11:38

We're trying to do a shop every two weeks if possible. The only thing we run out of is bread (Toast every morning). I know you can freeze bread but no idea how. It says on the bag to freeze in its own packaging but I don't how it will fare. Will I be able to take one or two slices out and toast straight from frozen or thaw the entire pack after I run out of my fresh one?

Any ideasSmile

I just freeze whole and thaw overnight on the kitchen side once I need a new loaf.

TankGirl97 · 17/04/2020 11:40

Just freeze the whole loaf in it's bag. Then each time you need a slice, remove it and shut the bag again. Works fine, in fact we freeze all our supermarket sliced bread and put it frozen directly into the toaster each morning.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 17/04/2020 11:40

Buy loaf, bung loaf in freezer.

Open bag and take out however many slices you need, close bag I use a clip.

Continue as normal.

I freeze bread, rolls, crumpets all the time. It’s fine.

Yes just put the whole thing in the freezer.
You should be able to separate slices (and toast from frozen) or just take the whole loaf out the night before.

Watertorture · 17/04/2020 11:41

I like to decant into freezer bags in groups of four, ready for breakfast Smile If you freeze it all together it's best to thaw all together. You can break a slice off here and there but it involves a knife and nerves of steel! Frozen bread can go straight in the toaster it tastes just the same toasted.

ACupOfCoffee · 17/04/2020 11:41

Freeze the entire loaf, and it's fine to take one or two slices out to toast direct from frozen. They might get "stuck" together, but can easily be separated from the rest of the loaf by putting a normal knife between the slices, so you can just take what you need and keep the rest frozen Smile

Ahwig · 17/04/2020 11:42

You can freeze it in its bag and take out slices as you need it. You can put frozen bread in the toaster and if you wanted a sandwich just take out the amount of bread you want., put it on a plate each slice separately, turn it over after about half an hour , leave that side for about 20 minutes and it’s good to go. I do it all the time, saves a lot of waste

BrooHaHa · 17/04/2020 11:42

Yeah. Just bung it in there. If you're in a hurry and forget to get it out, you can defrost it in the microwave (DH refuses to countenance this, but if you butter it while still warm it's all chewy and delicious).

ChristmasCarcass · 17/04/2020 11:44

You literally just put it in the freezer in its bag when you get home from the shop. If you buy unsliced, Alice it before you freeze it. When you want a piece you take it out and either put it straight in the toasted if you want toast, or microwave for 10-20s if you want bread. It’s fine, we freeze all of ours (goes mouldy before we finish it otherwise).

French bread and ciabatta don’t defrost quite so well (tend to go a bit dry) - buy half-cooked loaves you can finish off in the oven if you want either of those.

mynameiscalypso · 17/04/2020 11:45

I love microwaved frozen bread @BrooHaHa! I'm so glad someone else does too. It's not toast obviously but it's so delicious in its own right.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 17/04/2020 11:45

The gamechanger for me has been realising you can get it out of the freezer, shake the frost/moisture out and then let it defrost in the bag, it gets less soggy.

AllPlayedOut · 17/04/2020 11:45

The quickest way to defrost the slices is to stand them upright in the toaster. It usually only takes 5-10 minutes if you do this.

Bananabixfloof · 17/04/2020 11:45

Yeah freeze entire loaf in bag. Take out however many slices required for toast, toast from frozen, replace rest of loaf in freezer.
If by any tiny chance a slice sticks to another slice, just prize it off or bash the bread on a worktop. That loosens all the slices.

Reallybadidea · 17/04/2020 11:46

I do sometimes find that slices stick together in the freezer so I make sure that the loaf isn't packed too tightly into the freezer when it goes in, then you can just take out what you need. Defrost in a couple of hours on the worktop, or put it straight in the toaster on frozen setting for toast. My children defrost bread for sandwiches in the toaster on the lowest setting which I think is utterly depraved, vile behaviour, but they won't be stopped Grin

AllPlayedOut · 17/04/2020 11:46

Quickest way without using the defrost function on the microwave, that should say, but I prefer to let it thaw naturally and standing it in the toaster is the quickest way I've found.

FadedRed · 17/04/2020 11:48

I put bread into an airtight bag before freezing, as it can dry out in the freezer. Some bread is better than others for freezing- for example ‘tiger bread’ type tends to dry out and the crust flakes off.

Lindy2 · 17/04/2020 11:55

I just pop it straight into the freezer in the packaging it come in. You can easily separate the slices even when it's frozen. Just use a knife to prise off the slices you need if they get a bit stuck.

Frozen bread slices literally defrost in about 5 minutes when out of the freezer. If you are toasting them though you can do that straight from frozen.

BendingSpoons · 17/04/2020 11:57

We often freeze bread and milk to keep them fresh.

safariboot · 17/04/2020 12:03

We freeze our bread routinely. Bread goes straight in the freezer in its packet. Whole loaf comes out of the freezer and into the cupboard still in its packet to defrost. Tastes fine.

Like many have mentioned, getting slices off a frozen loaf can be hard work. It's doable, I just find it simpler to defrost it all.

AlCalavicci · 17/04/2020 12:14

I have got a loaf and some barmcakes in the frezzer , I cut the barms in half before freezing , if I am making butties for work o don't defrost the bread 1st as it helps to keep my butties cool / fresh for a longer .
Bread to toast goes under the grill frozen.

bluebluezoo · 17/04/2020 12:17

People really don’t know you can just bung bread in the freezer?

I thought that was a basic- bread products freeze very well.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 17/04/2020 12:18

I put the bread in the freezer in the same condition I got it off the shelf in the shop

When I want the frozen bread I defrost it overnight on the draining board

Watertorture · 17/04/2020 14:22

When you're short of freezer room, it can be easier to freeze a couple of smaller bags with bread in them than one larger loaf.

Topseyt · 17/04/2020 14:26

Just bung the whole loaf into the freezer when you get it home, still in it's bag.

No need for special treatment or anything. Confused

Toomboom · 17/04/2020 14:33

Just put whole loaf in freezer and get you how ever many slices you want at a time. I always do this and toast from frozen. Saves lots of waste.
