God, some people are LOVING this, aren't they?...

They're, for example, the local Tesco queue 'managers' who are actually doing this ✋ in people's faces, well within 2m of them, eyes ablazing, missionary zeal within their hearts- who are using zero common sense, when everyone is already doing the best they can in a Tesco Local, to stay apart.

You invaded my space (and that of the 'one out' I was about to replace by being 'one in') in dashing out 🤚 and stopping me entering your store because I stepped forward to wipe the handles of my basket. A good 2m from anyone, except you. As invited to do so, by your big sign.

You stood in 4 people's space. Me, you, the couple exiting the shop.

Use your intelligence. Like stand outside the store door, like your colleague suggested to you, under a balcony, on a beautiful day. And like the usual security guard manages.

We're all under pressure. We're all stressed. And in classic MN fashion, I PPE up close to actual Covid patients, every day.

So don't be a dick, Tesco assistant.

I really don't think any retail workers are loving anything about this. They're having to deal with so much abuse. Have you looked at the social media pages of Tescos etc?

TrickyKid · 16/04/2020 19:35

Maybe they're nervous. Maybe you could just be nicer.

NeverBeenLoved · 16/04/2020 19:55

They're not 'loving it's, no. They're doing their best to follow the guidelines and keep everyone safe and mostly get frustrated that some customers think the rules are open to interpretation.

Don't be a dick, Tesco customer.

ormami · 16/04/2020 19:56

You sound awful op. They're having a terrible stressful time

Helmlover1 · 16/04/2020 19:57

I don’t think it’s really the time to criticise key workers. They are putting their lives at risk so you can do your shopping. Your scenario doesn’t sound like such a big deal- you moved forward when you were told to stay where you were, which is why he put his hand up (to tell you to stop). How did the store worker know you were going to wipe a basket down and not traipse straight into the store when you weren’t meant to? It sounded as though he was just doing his job, give him a break.

Bearnecessity · 16/04/2020 20:03

Miljea I agree with you they are quite the martyrs and seem to be particularly relishing their bit of power. It was my son's 18th and I just wanted to buy him a card and over the tannoy they barked about essential buying only . I saw one tell a man off for daring to glance down at his shopping list...no probs in the other supermarkets that I've seen.

NeverBeenLoved · 16/04/2020 20:07

I saw one tell a man off for daring to glance down at his shopping list

That just didn't happen. It might be what you think you saw but that is just not what happened. No one is telling people off for the direction of their gaze! 🤣

AutumnCrow · 16/04/2020 20:08

The man directing customer traffic in and out of our nearest Tesco told us he was a volunteer.

slashlover · 16/04/2020 20:10

Does your second last sentence mean you stepped forward to clean the handles and went within 2m of him to do so? Did you wait to be called forward?

LilacTree1 · 16/04/2020 20:12

Must be a really tough job right now.

Bearnecessity · 16/04/2020 20:12

Honestly Never..the poor bloke was told to keep moving...

ineedaholidaynow · 16/04/2020 20:12

@Bearnecessity did you only go in to get a card? Didn’t you combine that with other shopping?

Our supermarket remind people to try and do their shopping as quickly as possible to allow other people to come into the shop.

I hate going shopping at the moment. I can’t imagine what it is like working in retail at the moment, having to deal with customers who don’t think the rules apply to them.

The person behind me in the queue the other day had no concept of personal space and he seemed to follow me round the shop.

WorraLiberty · 16/04/2020 20:15

The irony of the OP telling someone else not to be a dick...

pallisers · 16/04/2020 20:16

I doubt very much that any retail worker is LOVING this. They are on the frontline. the stress you feel going to a shop - they have for their entire shift. Where would you be if they didn't show up for work?

I don't care what you do in your working life (although do I believe you work in ppe with covoid patients with that attitude? ... do any of us ....) whatever you do, have some respect for the retail workers stacking your shelves and making sure you have food.

Raffathebear · 16/04/2020 20:16

What?! No!! Poor retail and shop staff! It's not a power trip thing. Its a very worrying time, they cant read your mind or let you do this because every one else will copy.

You sound very impatient, maybe someone else should do your shopping. Its not a quick pop in these days for obvious reasons and we all must be understanding and careful.

Pooshweens · 16/04/2020 20:16

You think anyone is loving this!? You sound very mean. Those poor workers getting paid a pittance relative to the risk they are exposed to

halexanderamilton · 16/04/2020 20:16

I can absolutely assure you that retail workers are not 'loving it'.

toomanyplants · 16/04/2020 20:17

Don't YOU be a dick, Tesco customer.
My other half is a Tesco express manager, and they are rotating the staff manning the door.
You do realise it's to keep ungrateful arseholes like you safe don't you?
Relishing the power.........or still working every day putting their lives, and whomever they live with, on the line?
I bet you also have the nerve to clap at your door after posting your garbage rant.

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/04/2020 20:17

Give them a break. They have to go to work and put their lives in danger for a pittance and no ppe

pallisers · 16/04/2020 20:18

It was my son's 18th and I just wanted to buy him a card and over the tannoy they barked about essential buying only

No they didn't "bark" They said it. They just happened to say something that you didn't like. I have an 18 year old. She would laugh at the idea that her mum needs to go to a shop in the middle of a lockdown to buy a card. Make a card for gods sake. Or tell your son what you feel about him. But don't go to a shop and complain about people "barking" when they are simply reminding you of what are the rules (needed in your case if not others)

Sparklingbrook · 16/04/2020 20:20

I really feel for retail staff at the moment.

Do you work for the NHS OP?

KrakowDawn · 16/04/2020 20:23

The checkout staff at my store told me they hadn't been given any priority to get groceries, so when they did their shopping on the days the shelves were bare they had nothing too.
Really, supermarket workers are not loving this.
All the ones I've seen are working hard, trying to keep positive for customers etc.

midnightstar66 · 16/04/2020 20:23

You sound like your were being pushy and rude. Maybe they needed another person or 2 to exit. Our Tesco workers have headsets and those inside tell them when to let people in depending on congestion throughout the store. I imagine they only put their hands up 🤚🏻 and get among people when it's absolutely necessary

Cosyblanky · 16/04/2020 20:31

You don't sound very considerate OP. We should value those that are keeping everything going for the rest of us.

Quarantimespringclean · 16/04/2020 20:37

Poor man. What a thankless job he has.
