Sodding wasps!!

Does anyone have any tips for keeping wasps out of the garden? I have loads of the little fuckers buzzing around while we're trying to have a civilised dinner outside. We seem to have this problem most years so any advice would be welcomed!

I don’t know, but as they are the stuff of nightmares I thought I would comment and hopefully someone will be along to help soon.

I feel physically sick when I see one, especially a dead one.

Bluntness100 · 15/04/2020 18:41

Do you have a nest somewhere? You need to go hunting because you will do, when you find it get an exterminator in, they do a fantastic job. Stuff you can buy doesn’t do it.

We get a nest every year, we call the guy in, he turns up that day usually, dons protective gear and in an hour they are gone. Dead.

But unless you find the nest you’re stuck with things like wasp catchers with beer or sugary water in, which doesn’t actually solve the problem.

Bluntness100 · 15/04/2020 18:42

Sorry I should say it takes him five mins, he puffs some stuff in and then leaves, an hour later the wasps are dead and we have no problem the rest of rhe summer.

Bluntness100 · 15/04/2020 18:42

Costs about twenty quid.

MunchyMunchkin · 15/04/2020 18:42

We had success with the waspinator which imitates a nest. The wasps won’t go near another nest. Also had a tree cut right back that they were attracted to the sap of.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 15/04/2020 18:42

We had loads last year, turned out they were nesting in some rotten wood in the garden. Cleared that and we just get occasional ones now. Might be worth checking for

CaptainBrickbeard · 15/04/2020 18:43

We hung up a Waspinator. It doesn’t keep them all away though. I hate the way they ruin dinner in the garden! I love bees but wasps are absolute dickheads.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 15/04/2020 18:45

Ok thanks might need a wasp guy then as we do have this problem every summer. They seem to hang out in our hedge but I can't see a nest. Bloody hate the little bastards.

already? Shit. I hate wasps.

Bluntness100 · 15/04/2020 18:52

Get the exterminator in they will find the nest for you. If you’re getting it every year then you’ve got a nest.

We had it the first two years in this house and it was a nightmare. Couldn’t even open the windows as they would fly in , tried everything, including wasp catchers all over, so eventually called an exterminator in and haven’t had a problem since, been here nearly six years.

Whenever I see a wasp, I look for a nest, I just call him, he comes out that day normally, puffs stuff into it, then leaves, and you see them coming out and flying away but floating down as they do. They don’t die on your patio or anything. And then that’s it. First year he had to find the nest for us.

Now we know where to look. Bung him twenty quid cash and jobs done.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 15/04/2020 19:22

Sounds like a plan @Bluntness100, just need to find one near me.

I think it's a bit early in the year for wasps. Lots of different types of bees at the moment. Some bees look very similar to wasps. There seem to be a lot of bee flies being reported this year.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 16/04/2020 01:08

It's not too early, definitely had a couple of wasps over the last few days.

Bluntness100 · 16/04/2020 06:42

It’s certainly not too early for wasps and I’m fairly sure the op can identify a wasp...😂

SuddenArborealStop · 16/04/2020 06:46

We've had a lot of bees that look like wasps, they've got long legs and hover for ages then full on fight each other. I hate them but they were in the park as well as my garden so I don't think there's a nest. The bumble bees are the size of birds and the honey bees seem bigger too. Trying to assure DS they're not scary but the waspy ones don't fly away if you swat.

SuddenArborealStop · 16/04/2020 06:47

Oh maybe they're bee flies, yuck

Purplequalitystreet · 16/04/2020 06:54

We had them in our garden hedges as well. Was a total nightmare. Couldn't eat outside or enjoy our garden. Took the decision to remove the hedges last year (We have a fence) and no more wasps. Utter bliss. It was totally worth it

Purplequalitystreet · 16/04/2020 06:55

Should say there wasn't a nest. The just loved the rotting wood in and under the hedge

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 16/04/2020 06:58

Aw I love my hedges though @Purplequalitystreet - they completely surround my garden! Would be very difficult to remove them if that's what's causing the problem.

I hate the pointless fuckers too, and am allergic to their stings. They actually seek me out. One followed me into my house the other day and another flew into the cupboard I was cleaning. They put me off going into my garden or opening my windows as they always come in.

lubeybooby · 16/04/2020 08:26

I had this problem last year and so this year I put 2 waspinators out about 2 weeks ago, before the queens start looking for a nesting site. One out front and one out back. Things are definitely better so far. Last year there were hundreds of the fuckers around Easter but no visible nest

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 16/04/2020 18:50

I was greeted when I got up this morning by a half dead one on the kitchen window sill. It didn't stay half dead for long.

Floexotic · 16/04/2020 18:52

I was adamantly telling my daughter it was too early for wasps and it must have been a bee she saw when a huge fucker flew in the window!
I think this is the time they build their nests

Ownerofmultiplechimps · 16/04/2020 22:55

Waspinator here, got it last year & improved things massively. I am the same as @Qwerty543 & very allergic to their stings, they definitely seek me out to torment me!
