Flour and yeast- have you managed to source any?

I always bake our bread, but am unable to find flour or yeast in local shops. Absolutely zilch.
Are you able to get hold of any where you are?
Do you know of somewhere I can order any online?

I haven't seen any for weeks

CMOTDibbler · 15/04/2020 11:39

Our local farm shops all have flour, and a local restaurant are selling both flour and yeast through their click and collect service.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 15/04/2020 11:40

Our local bakery is selling flour, found some in our small Sainsburys this morning

A local wholesaler is delivering flour amongst other products.

Essex that is if you happen to be in Essex?

Sexnotgender · 15/04/2020 11:43

Flour is fine if you know where to look. Yeast is like gold dust!!

Gatekeeper · 15/04/2020 11:45

I got some from a bakery- fresh yeast and bread flour

AudaCityLimits · 15/04/2020 11:46

I live in the countryside (depths of Wales) and really only have two shops that I can justifiably travel to. Neither of which have flour or yeast at all! I'd make a sourdough starter but it's a waste having to feed it flour all the time!

I saw another MNer mention Shipton Mills as still delivering yeast, although delivery slots are limited.

Harakeke · 15/04/2020 11:53

Making sourdough starters doesn’t have to involve waste. Mine is small - I add 3 tablespoons of flour each day. It is in a small jar - I use half of the starter each day for a loaf. None is thrown away, ever.

You can also make yeast out of dried fruit, and the dregs of wine and beer. I haven’t tried but it’s possible (I’m also a keen bread maker and baker and have been looking for alternatives!)

TooTrusting · 15/04/2020 11:53

In case you are within their radius, Lewis Pies in Swansea are selling yeast and flour, although in large quantities (I shared what I bought with 2 friends).
If not, see if there is a similar bakery company in your area who might deliver.
Castell Howell foods (normally a catering supplies service) also has a shop I'm at its base in Carmarthenshire if that's any good?
Otherwise bakeries in your closest town (who may also deliver to you)?

Harakeke · 15/04/2020 11:54

Actually that doesn’t work out mathematically does it - using half each day! Some days I feed it up more than others and I don’t make a loaf every day, more like every 1.5-2 days.

TooTrusting · 15/04/2020 11:55

I've been trying to get a Shipton Mill delivery slot for my DM for days (she uses their Spelt flour). There aren't any. I check the website about 10 times a day.

Obviouspretzel · 15/04/2020 11:58

Well it does wasteflour while you are making it though. It doesn't once it is ready to bake with.

SistemaAddict · 15/04/2020 11:59

I've got both from my local health shop.

unexpectedthird · 15/04/2020 11:59

I got a 500g bag of dried yeast from ebay which is doing us nicely. I just need to find enough flour to use it now.😂

UnalliterativeGeorge · 15/04/2020 12:02

I've got some from local cake businesses who aren't making cakes at the minute but are bagging up their flour into smaller quantities and selling it.

chunkyrun · 15/04/2020 12:04

Yes! Third shop I went to had some. It was a small local shop come pie shop.

MulticolourMophead · 15/04/2020 12:04

@Harakeke I'm new to the idea of sourdough starters, can you describe how you make and feed yours? TIA

Bloodybridget · 15/04/2020 12:05

I bought fresh yeast from a local deli/wholefoods shop a few days ago, and we got strong white flour from Sainsbury's yesterday - they also seemed to have dried yeast by then.

myrtleberry · 15/04/2020 12:06

My husband got a small bag of plain flour from a large Sainsburys recently. He said they were pushed to the back of a bottom shelf so you couldn't see them unless you bent down to have a look.

ineedaholidaynow · 15/04/2020 12:08

Managed to get bread flour the other day. First time in weeks. No plain or self raising though. No yeast either, but luckily already had some

Harakeke · 15/04/2020 12:10

“Well it does wasteflour while you are making it though.”

How does it though? All mine gets used in bread, right from the beginning. I have never thrown any away.

KoalasandRabbit · 15/04/2020 12:11

We can get flour at our village supermarket and from the village pub, think local flour mills are doing it to. Unfortunately we are nowhere near Wales. If you try flour mills maybe one would deliver or do you have a baker or pub that's doing food parcels close by, we are rural.

PersonaNonGarter · 15/04/2020 12:12

My DH makes bread at least twice a week normally. We can’t find yeast.

(Yes, I know how the science of yeast works but we are straightforward folk who like the yeast from a packet.)
