Flour and yeast- have you managed to source any?

I always bake our bread, but am unable to find flour or yeast in local shops. Absolutely zilch.
Are you able to get hold of any where you are?
Do you know of somewhere I can order any online?

Some of you are lucky, I am in rural Wales, too and despite obsessive looking and researching I've not been able to buy flour for almost a month now. Tesco's do have some sort of coconut flour stuff but that's not what I'm after!

We usually bake our own bread but we have run out of flour now so we are having to buy it. By the way for those of you who can source large blocks of yeast - fresh yeast can be frozen so do not turn it down!

whisperinglow · 15/04/2020 14:52

If it helps anyone we have a bakery based near Bromley and can supply both flour and fresh yeast (and bread!).

Knotaknitter · 15/04/2020 15:13

I got 500g of dried yeast (Ebay) this week and a 16kg sack of bread flour from Shipton Mill last week. I've not seen either in the shops for the last month and I was down to the last bag of flour. If I could have got hold of vital wheat gluten at the time I was ordering the flour then I would probably have bought plain flour as one sack would then do me for plain, self raising and bread flour. By the time I found out about it, it was out of stock everywhere.

Woohoo! Just bought loads of yeast off ebay. Hoping that I'll be able to get lucky and find flour soon...

lakeland online told me they would have breadmixes back in stock towards the end of this week.

rosydreams · 15/04/2020 15:19

my other half managed to get a bag of flour with yeast mixed in it from sainburys hmmmm.I wanted some yeast to do some baking activities with my daughter not sure how this would work

JonHammIsMyJamm · 15/04/2020 15:26

No. I don’t need yeast as I’m not making bread but I do use flour routinely in cooking. I’ve just used the last tablespoon of plain in the house and there’s been none on the supermarket shelves for a month. I haven’t looked further afield.

magimedi · 15/04/2020 15:57

@picklemewalnuts Could you be abit more specific about keeping your yeast going, please? How big a lump (roughly) do you keep & how much flour & water do you give it? Do you keep it somewhere warm? Many thanks.

NoWordForFluffy · 15/04/2020 16:14

Flour is like hens' teeth round this way. I allegedly have 2 bags of plain in my Tesco order for tomorrow which haven't gone out of stock yet. Bread flour - other than in expensive small bags - still isn't in stock.

We do have some in our Brexit stores, but it will start to run low very soon and we make almost all of our own bread.

I've not looked for yeast recently, but don't recall seeing any anywhere.

Unknown2020 · 15/04/2020 16:36

Do you have a Lidl? Mine has had loads of flour and baking stuff every time I’ve been!

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 15/04/2020 16:49

Just this minute got a click and collect for Sainsbury’s on Monday they seemed to have read flour and yeast in stock, at least it wasn’t saying not in stock like some items. I will see if it happens on Monday though.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 15/04/2020 16:59

I’m very lucky, someone in the village is ordering a bulk load, divvying it up and delivering it too!
I’m going to have a go at sourdough 😀

picklemewalnuts · 15/04/2020 18:00

@magimedi

I take a satsuma size lump of dough and put it in an old mayo jar with 'some' water- maybe an inch in the jar? I put a couple of tbs flour in as well. I place the lid on and leave it in the kitchen. My kitchen is probably about 18-20 degrees at the moment, cooler overnight.
Every day I add a spoon or two of flour and another splash of water. I only stir it if the top has got hard and dried out, then I prod the water and flour back in and prod it a bit more. You end up with a bubbly mousse kind of thing, probably called a sponge in baking terms.

It's generally getting a bit full after four days, so I make another loaf. If I want a loaf more quickly, I add some warm water and more flour so it builds up enough to use the same day. I don't pay attention to times when I bake- I look at the dough and decide if it's ready or not. It may take a bit longer to rise than you expect- or it may be quicker! It depends on the strength of your starting mix and how much mix there is to new loaf.

Look up 'making bread from old dough'. It's similar.
It sorts itself out.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 15/04/2020 18:30

I just ordered some from ingredients for cooks. 16kg bag, minimum spend £40 and postage is ££££ but we bake our own bread so have sucked it up. Won't hold my breath though, we had an order confirmed from somewhere else who then cancelled it 4 days later.

magimedi · 15/04/2020 22:11

Flowers Thankyou, @picklemewalnuts

Will be going on from there when my yeast runs out.

Flour and yeast available here - I’ve ordered flour but don’t know what the quality is like

allthelittleangelsriseupriseup · 16/04/2020 00:12

My wonderful neighbour (who works @ Asda) came good with 3kg of bread flour yesterday and two tins of Allinsons dried yeast today!

AvalancheKit · 16/04/2020 06:16

Just take extra care when buying scarce goods online at the moment. Check the provenance and whether the supplier is genuine or has a limited footprint. This are good times for scammers.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 16/04/2020 06:33

Yeah I made sure to use my credit card just in case.

Witchend · 16/04/2020 07:19

I just bought a 16kg bag through an industrial shop, I think it should last is through lockdown.

AvalancheKit · 16/04/2020 07:19

Try this

NoWordForFluffy · 16/04/2020 07:26

That online shop has hugely inflated prices, @AvalancheKit. The 16kg sacks direct from suppliers are a much better cost, per kg.

WellTidy · 16/04/2020 07:41

Following this thread avidly. I need SR flour as it is DS’ birthday soon and I need to make a cake. I can see that Squires (link provided by a PP below) has 16kg bags but I am trying to avoid buying in bulk as in reality I use maybe 1kg of SR flour every six weeks. And I don’t want to spend £20 in one go.

Anyone have any idea where I can buy in a smaller quantity please? None at all available in local shops and we don’t have supermarket delivery slots.

NoWordForFluffy · 16/04/2020 07:57

If you can get plain flour you can use that with baking powder to get SR. Worth keeping an eye out for both!

Nodney · 16/04/2020 07:57

I use chapatti flour to make my bread - I make a 50/50 loaf wholemeal/white I don't know if they would be in stock as I bought them just before the lockdown but it might be worth a try?
