My DD lost her top two front & bottom teeth naturally last year. Her bottom teeth grew back very quickly. However her top two front ones fell out last October just over 6 months ago & still haven't regrown 😟 is there something wrong? I'm in Ireland & all dentists are currently closed in my area...

Sometimes people don’t developed their adult teeth buds, so when the baby teeth fall out, there’s nothing there. When did she last see a dentist? What did they say?

peppersneezes000 · 15/04/2020 09:47

She was at the dentist last in September to get a check out, nothing mentioned

Don’t panic. The adult teeth may well be there just taking their time
Generally if there’s no adult tooth the baby teeth don’t get pushed out so the fact that the baby ones are gone suggests adult are there

Next check up ask the dentist.

They may take an X-ray to be sure the teeth are there and to check the bone structure

There could be several reasons why the teeth aren’t coming through
If there’s no pain it’s ok to wait

Worst case, the teeth aren’t there, though that’s unlikely as Heatherjayne said. More likely, they are just slow to come down. Xrays will confirm but nothing would be done for some time. If the teeth are staying in the gum, then the ultimate treatment would be to attach a hook in order to pull them down using a brace. That would require general anaesthetic and would be done after a lengthy watch and wait period so there’s no urgency to see a dentist.

When my DS lost his front teeth he had a gap for months and months. I thought that his adult teeth would never come down! They did eventually, but one took longer to come down than the other so we’re quite uneven for about a year. My DD, on the other hand always had the new tooth showing before the baby tooth fell out.

midnightstar66 · 15/04/2020 10:39

DD 10 had a baby one removed by the dentist back in November as it had been wobbly for a long time, dentist thought it was preventing the adult tooth growing in and blamed dd for not wobbling it to get it out (she had been, lots) however there's still absolutely no sign of that adult tooth and obviously dentist is now out the question. Her sister 3 years younger now has both her adult teeth and dd still has a huge gap. No answers but at 7 I'd be less worried especially as they fell out of their own accord which would suggest they've been pushed

midnightstar66 · 15/04/2020 10:41

My DD, on the other hand always had the new tooth showing before the baby tooth fell out.

This was the same with my dd til this one front tooth - she's sporting her first ever gap aged 10

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 15/04/2020 10:44

My dd had a gap for around 8 months. It’s because her jaw needed to grow and make a bigger space than the baby teeth had left. I’m glad they took their time as she has beautifully straight teeth.

MrsCastiel · 15/04/2020 10:46

Sounds like my DS, also 7, OP.

They have started to just about grow, but one quicker than the other.

minipie · 15/04/2020 10:51

My DD’s front top teeth took forever to come through after the baby teeth fell out. I don’t remember exactly how long, maybe not as long as you’re describing but way longer than her other teeth.

currentlychilled · 15/04/2020 10:52

I'm a dentist. Try not to worry. This is common, and your child is still young. The teeth are probably on their way. Can you rub your ( clean) finger over the top of the gum? You can usually palpate the unerupted teeth in this area, feels like two tooth shaped lumps.
It's very rare for these teeth to be congenitally missing. It's usually the ones either side that are more commonly missing.
It maybe that they are in a slightly different position, but most probably still just developing.
Worst case scenario, although I'd probably wait a few years, if teeth still haven't erupted say by age 9 or so, there is a simple procedure you can do under local anaesthetic to relieve the gum and allow for eruption. The teeth then erupt in a matter of days, which is very cool to watch!

Sorry to hijack your post OP @currentlychilled re my comment a couple down as my daughter is 10 should I be more worried there was a big hole where the baby too was removed. It looked very like the adult tooth was pushing forward out the gum which is why the dentist removed but now there's no sign and I wonder if it was swelling instead. There has been instances of missing adult teeth in my family but it was though to have come from my half brother or sisters dads side (not my dad) and has up til now only affected males also has always been bottom teeth. It is getting worrying now I was leaving it til her her routine appointment which would have been due earlier this month but obviously never happened

oohnicevase · 15/04/2020 11:30

My son has this , after many visits being told to wait , we finally got an X-ray and it's stuck in his head , he is in the process of having it braced to drag it down . It did involve an op but it's obvs your choice .

CormoranStrike · 15/04/2020 11:43

My daughter was missing a couple of her front teeth from birth.

She ended up with a Maryland bridge, which is a good permanent solution of need be.

Midnightstar66,
Your child is still really young. If it was my patient I'd probably take an X-ray and do a full orthodontic examination now, possibly refer to an orthodontist for reassurance if nothing else. It most likely is too early to do any orthodontic treatment. It can be fixed, whatever the problem, normally, so try not to worry. A six month delay in chatting to your dentist shouldn't make any difference. Concentrate on really good oral hygiene and diet at the moment, as that is the single most important factor just now.

wendz86 · 15/04/2020 13:22

Took my daughter around 18 months for the ones either side of her middle top teeth to grow . The dentists weren’t overly worried but said they’d do a x ray if they hadn’t grown next time we saw them .

midnightstar66 · 15/04/2020 13:27

@currentlychilled thanks that's reassuring. Her teeth are otherwise great so I'd not normally worry about missing her routine appointment in these circumstances. It's good to know there's no rush

Mrsmorton · 15/04/2020 13:31

@CormoranStrike was she missing them due to cleft lip/palate?

MilkLady02 · 15/04/2020 13:32

7 is still quite early for adult upper incisors. Anything up to 9yrs is still within normal range. Totally normal to have a gap for several months. Very rare for those teeth to be missing. I can’t even remember the last time I took an X-ray for a patient that age and there was a problem. (Another dentist!)

Bridecilla · 15/04/2020 13:36

Ds is the same. He's 8. One is finally coming through after about 10 months. Dentist said he was about a year behind the norm in dental stakes but nothing to worry about

spiderlight · 15/04/2020 13:39

My son's lateral incisors took 18 months to put in an appearance as well, and now at 13 he's had gaps since losing his upper canines last August. They're just starting to poke through now and the orthodontist says it's nothing to worry about in his case. He's always been late with everything tooth-related - didn't start losing his baby teeth until he was 7 and was the last in his school year to do so, but everything is happening in its own good time.

CormoranStrike · 15/04/2020 13:44

@mrsmorton yes, exactly that

YerAWizardHarry · 15/04/2020 13:47

My sons lateral incisors are taking ages to come through which is unusual for him, his centrals came in pretty quickly and I'd say are full grown near enough (he was 7 in Jan) he got and subsequently lost his teeth super quick, weve had 8 toothfairy visits

ohthepigeons · 15/04/2020 13:50

Dd7 was the same, it took about 8 months for them to come through but now that they have they are lovely and straight and perfectly spaced so maybe they just needed that time to align perfectly who knows?
