Breakfast - is this enough and can I improve?

This morning for breakfast my 14 year old DS (skinny and growing) and I (not remotely skinny and dieting) had this:

1 slice of brown bread and butter (I didnt have this)
1 softly boiled egg
2 sliver/slices of smoked salmon (obviously we wouldn't usually have this but I picked it up as a treat)

He isn't doing a huge amount (almost none) or exercise. Im doing a couple of online workouts a day.

He'll be 'hungry' again in an hour. Am I being mean with food? I'm trying to give him decent food rather than sugary carby cereals.

OP posts:
Miraclescometrue · 13/04/2020 10:47

There’s no point giving him ‘decent’ food if he’s starving one hour later.

Bakedpotatoandgin · 13/04/2020 10:47

He also taught himself to bake bread and cakes and cook most standard meals as that way dm didn’t have to be feeding him constantly!

Mummyshark2018 · 13/04/2020 10:48

That's not much at all. I'd expect a growing boy to eat double the portion of what I'm eating.

My 10 year old eats a bigger breakfast than that. It isn’t enough.

Samtsirch · 13/04/2020 10:49

As pps have said
I would have added another toast and another egg,
Or a bowl of cereal.

MarinaMarinara · 13/04/2020 10:49

I think OP has taken it all on board! FWIW OP - sometimes online workouts can burn quite a few calories plus whenever my DC are having a growth spurt they eat loads more than you’d think they would need but are still slim so he may just need more calories than you’d realised.

dementedpixie · 13/04/2020 10:49

My dd is averaging 2 meals a day at the minute as she isnt getting up until lunchtime. She isnt expending much energy so needs less food.

Doesnt sound like much food though - add another slice of bread and another egg if they want it

Queenoftheashes · 13/04/2020 10:50

That’s about 250 calories and what I would eat as a short woman on a diet.
I recall my brother at that age, making his own breakfast for a start, and having double that plus baked beans at least. He is completely lean to this day.

eurochick · 13/04/2020 10:50

2 eggs, 2 slices of toast would be a standard adult or teenager portion in my house (everyone has normal bmi).

Bluntness100 · 13/04/2020 10:51

Is the issue ability to shop for food or finances? Yes this isn’t much for a growing teenager, what’s causing you to control his food intake to this level?

nellythenarwhal · 13/04/2020 10:55

It's fine for an adult woman but not for the kids.

My boys (underweight) would have probably gone for 4 toast, at least 2 or 3 eggs and had fruit on top.

Shadeslayer · 13/04/2020 10:55

My 8 year old would have 2 of each 3 year old would have 2 of each and eat the lot

Movinghouseatlast · 13/04/2020 10:57

I would have that on a diet.

He need 2 eggs and 2 toast I would say.

viques · 13/04/2020 10:58

I think if he politely says he could eat the breakfast again he is'asking for more. Maybe he is conscious that buying food ATM is fraught with problems and is being considerate by not eating too much. If he is still hungry after a meal then his perception of what his body needs will be skewed. He needs to learn when his body has had enough which he won't do if he is still hungry. If you have the food then feed him properly.

14 year old boys are famous for having hollow legs! One egg and one slice of bread is what I’d give to an 8 year old.

Nice choice of breakfast, but I think he needs two eggs, two slices of bread and maybe fruit and yogurt.

TheEndIsBillNighy · 13/04/2020 11:00

It’s a lovely breakfast, but my immediate thought would be to double the eggs and toast OR do 3 eggs and 1 slice of toast.

Floralnomad · 13/04/2020 11:00

Do you have money troubles or difficulty getting food OP ? If not at 14 he should be able to sort out his own snack when he needs one and yes the breakfast is miserly for a teen .

Peanutbutteryogurt · 13/04/2020 11:00

Why would you restrict the food of a slim 14 year old boy? Can he not help himself to food when he's hungry?

Duckingell · 13/04/2020 11:01

I would have doubled up on the eggs and the toast. For myself and certainly for a teenage lad.

When we have eggs for breakfast here we usually have two each (if poached or boiled). But if I'm doing omelettes it is usually 3 eggs each.

Eggs are only about 90 cals each and provide a lot of good stuff.

Pentium85 · 13/04/2020 11:01

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how issues with food begin.

Seriously OP, you're going to cause more harm than good. Please think carefully about your choices.

TheChosenTwo · 13/04/2020 11:04

1 slice of bread and butter, one egg and 2 slivers of smoked salmon for a 14 year old growing lad? No wonder he’s still hungry Confused
Please don’t push your issues of being overweight onto him.
Why isn’t he making his own breakfast?
Other than when I’m doing pancakes or preparing avocado for bagels etc, sometimes weekend cook ups, I haven’t routinely made my 14 or 15 year old dds breakfast for years! Even ds who is 8 has been taught how to make his own bacon sandwiches (With supervision) for breakfast.

LochJessMonster · 13/04/2020 11:04

Calm down ffs she’s not policing it! She was cooking breakfast for them both!

Why you be ‘giving’ a 14 year lad breakfast anyway? Why can’t he make his own? A 14 year old boy doesn’t need waiting on by a calorie policing mother.

So even though they are having the same thing she should only cook hers and then let him cook his? Obviously it makes sense to cook both peoples salmon and eggs at the same time.

Some people on here are weird...

jomaIone · 13/04/2020 11:10

My 2 year old eats 2 slices of peanut butter toast and a banana every morning 🤣 If she ate eggs, I would give her one poached egg and 2 toast.

nellythenarwhal · 13/04/2020 11:14

If you were making eggs for yourself, you wouldn't just add an extra for a spouse or teen child? That's weird.
