By myself in A&E - is anyone awake for a hand hold

Gently though, cos I think I’ve broken my wrist. Fainted and landed on it 🤦🏻‍♀️

They won’t let DP stay with me because of coronavirus. So sent him home to get some rest. I still feel quite dizzy and a lot of pain so sitting on the floor waiting for X-ray.

Trying to be brave but it’s weird here. Everyone with masks on.

Yeah the sinky drop of blood test was fine earlier.

BP still lowish, blood sugar ok. Xray apparently negative but I know some fractures eg scaphoid are notoriously difficult to see initially. He’s gone to have another squint at the rads after seeing how painful it is to rotate.

Yep scaphoid typically has to come back in 24/48 hours for another xray

Lying awake, so popping in to sit with you for a while. I spent a summer in and out of A&E when I was a young adult and it’s not a fun place to be by yourself.

I broke my wrist aged 8. The pain was horrible so I understand! Thank you for giving blood, that was a lovely thing to do. Flowers

OneHanded · 13/04/2020 03:58

Another friend to hold your good hand! Totally agree with above, I spend my life in the places but am always reliant on the 24/7 costs to get me through!
Most importantly we want you to be okay, fingers crossed it is just some nasty bruising and they can send you on your way with some goooood painkillers

Bowerbird5 · 13/04/2020 04:08

Hi,
Hope you will get home soon. Just make sure if they put a splint on it is for the right hand. Hand a young doctor try to put a left handed one and wonder why it didn’t look right. I had to gently tell him as he velcroed me into it that it was for the other hand. He sheepishly said are you sure. Yep. Interesting they told me it was fractured but later on my GP said it wasn’t although he sent me up there as he thought it was. I was there to see him anyway. Radiographer report said it wasn’t and yet it was the Consultant Radiographer that said it was as she was training someone and got him to take an extra picture. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Take some paracetamol if you can when you get home to help you sleep. I fainted last time I was giving blood. I was given tea and two biscuits and told they weren’t that desperate for it. I have been thinking I might go as I’m O rhnegative.
Take it easy today. It can be very painful even if it isn’t fractured.

Oh no OP really feel for you. I broke my wrist 11 weeks ago learning to roller skate to enjoy my daughter's roller skate party in March which ended up being cancelled anyway due to Covid19. Luckily A&E wasn't too bad on a Saturday night on the 1st day of the month as I was taken in after 9 pm and left the hospital just before 1am. And on the night I believe the only reason I left that late is due to constantly fainting after the fall. I had several ECG's taken and blood pressure. Initially, ECG was erratic but calmed down and BP remained low for a while but I think mainly because I am a bit of a wus with a very low pain threshold.

Lynda07 I also wasn't given pain killers because they were worried about my fainting that it might have worse effects.

Also, the cast was removed 16th March but my hand still utter useless and still very swollen

RoomForMore · 13/04/2020 04:50

How are you doing OP? Hope it's not long till you can get home and get into bed!

OpthalmosVerde · 13/04/2020 05:09

Home. Doc agreed the pain is disproportionate but still can’t see a fracture on the rads. They had no slings or splints available so had a HCA tie a triangular bandage but that fell off on the way out. No painkillers prescribed just told to take otc and come back in 5 days if it’s still painful. I’ve put on a wrap support which is helping and had some cocodamol stashed so upgraded my analgesia myself!

They were really up against it. Everyone redeployed and acting up. The porters were agency catering staff, the HCAs students (not final year medics - nursing/paramedic students). I feel a tad guilty for going now if it really isn’t broken but have to say I’m not convinced, it’s so very painful when it rotates.

Thanks for the company, it made it so much less scary!

That’s been a bad night for you. Hope the painkillers kick in soon and you can get some rest.

Let us know how you’re doing later on.

TW2013 · 13/04/2020 06:09

You can buy splints on line, look for one with a metal support and velcro if they said they would usually immobilise it. We tend to buy Actesso ones from Amazon. Hope it is feeling better soon.

foofooyeah · 13/04/2020 06:15

Hope you manage to get some rest.

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/04/2020 06:25

Ooh, sounds rough op. Hope you get some rest. Pop back on later and let us know how you are

SavageBeauty73 · 13/04/2020 07:50

You poor thing. I fell really badly on Thursday (tripped while walking the dog) and I thought I had broken my wrist. I hadn't.

Hope the pain gets better.

ACoverIsNotABook · 13/04/2020 07:57

I broke my scaphoid four weeks ago, they couldn’t see it on the X-ray but due to pain and the fact it felt exactly like when I broke the scaphoid on my other wrist they immediately treated it as broken. I had a temporary cast on for a week then due to imminent lockdown, they put a removable splint on. They are trying to put as few people as possible in hard casts. The doctor also rang and said they were discharging me due to CV but to ring if there were any issues or disproportionate pain.

Big hugs to you. It’s bloody painful. I’d get a splint from online. Also try to hold it upwards as if it was in a sling to try and reduce swelling. Don’t take ibuprofen, apparently that can delay bone regrowth. Paracetamol is more effective if you take it regularly. That said, both my broken wrists have been horrifically painful and I had tramadol prescribed both times. Please ring your GP surgery if you need stronger pain relief.

Hope you heal quickly.
