Why do we not celebrate Easter in the same way that we celebrate Christmas?

I know that Easter is about the death and resurrection of Jesus whereas Christmas is about the birth and nativity of Jesus which is probably something that you’d celebrate more than a death!

You don’t really have to be religious to celebrate either, I wouldn’t describe myself as particularly religious, but I still like to take part in the celebrations for both because I think it’s nice and something to look forward to every year. More so Christmas!

Anyway, I know we have Easter eggs and all that, but we don’t have Easter music, Easter lights/trees/decorations and the list goes on.

Christmas seems to be more of an event because we have music, decorations and lights and we have a big Christmas dinner.

Why is this?

Because its all fucking ridiculous

ShanghaiDiva · 12/04/2020 12:38

Some people have Easter trees- branches with eggs and decorations etc. Was very popular when I lived in Germany.

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 12/04/2020 12:38

I suspect it's because we need a big celebration to cheer us up in the depths of winter.

Christians celebrate his resurrection, not his death. They remember and commemorate his death. Both festivals were grafted onto previous pagan ones in the various parts of the world as Christianity spread and attracted, adapted customs etc over the centuries. An awful lot of the cvelebration of both festivals is entirely unconnected to the religious element and have been bigged up by the retail sector to encourage sales.

notsureneversure · 12/04/2020 12:40

I assume it’s got a lot to do with Christmas and the winter solstice celebrations having been lumped together. There’s a lot of info out there about how Christmas came to be what it is today.

I’m on the Continent and we have Easter tree branches here with decorations Smile

CheriLittlebottom · 12/04/2020 12:40

Because of the time of year. People need a lift in winter. Christmas was piggy backed onto the winter solstice celebration - we need to have a feast and celebrate being half way out of the dark.

Easter is in spring - we are already feeling better about the world by the time the sun is shining and the flowers are out. Less of a need for a celebration.

CheriLittlebottom · 12/04/2020 12:41

Though I also enjoy slippery's shorter explanation!

Barbararara · 12/04/2020 12:42

I think the fact that Christmas is midwinter and we need the distraction from the cold and misery might be part of it.

Easter tends to fall at a more hopeful time, when the worst of the weather is behind us.

BertieBotts · 12/04/2020 12:43

Depths of winter theory is my vote. But it's kind of weird anyway, isn't it? Other countries don't single out Christmas and go as massively overboard as we do! For me Easter is about getting together with family as it tends to be the school holiday that matches up wherever you are and it's not as expensive or deathly hot as July / August. Can't do that this year so feels a bit flat.

fourpeasinapod · 12/04/2020 12:45

Love all your thoughts about it. I just got curious!

That’s so true about the time of year - December would be sooooo boring if we celebrated Christmas like we celebrate Easter

BentNeckLady · 12/04/2020 12:46

Because Christmas piggybacked on an ancient mid winter festival and Easter was just made up.

bookmum08 · 12/04/2020 12:50

I have an Easter Tree. It's a branch decorated with small ornaments. I discovered the concept of them a few years ago from a friend that did one, discovered it has German origins and thought "well it's pretty so why not".
Easter traditions though are mostly based on the pagan spring celebrations - all those bunnies, chicks and eggs have nothing to do with Christianity.

fourpeasinapod · 12/04/2020 12:52

So true @bookmum08 I suppose it’s a bit like snowmen and reindeers at Christmas time

OP posts:
fourpeasinapod · 12/04/2020 12:54

@bookmum08 would you be able to post a pic on here of your Easter tree? I’ve never seen one apart from Google Images!

Pasithea · 12/04/2020 12:56

The celebration of the goddess Eostre has been celebrated a lot longer than 2020 years.

popcorndiva · 12/04/2020 12:57

I actually like the fact Easter has less pressure heaped on it.

bookmum08 · 12/04/2020 13:09

Not the best picture I am afraid. The branch is actually a reusable one I got from Poundland last year and the decorations I think were from Flying Tiger. I usually get a bunch of paint your own ceramic eggs etc from Hobbycraft but obviously this year that's not happened.

Why do we not celebrate Easter in the same way that we celebrate Christmas?
mencken · 12/04/2020 13:13

thank goodness we don't. Bad enough that tatmas starts in August now, if Easter was the same you would never be able to buy anything useful as shelves would always be full of pointless crap.

Likefootball · 12/04/2020 13:16

Could we really take 2 christmases ?
Think of all the hassle , could anybody do that twice ?
Christmas is great if you've got little ones.
Not that big a deal if you have n't.
Easter is a nice break.

CovidCanFKcuOFF · 12/04/2020 13:17

I like the religious stories but I'm not religious.. I also like to dabble with the traditions.

Christmas for me is about light at the darkest time of year. Hope. Something to look forward too.
Easter is about spring, birth, renewals. Halloween again is perfect marking of huge season change...

CovidCanFKcuOFF · 12/04/2020 13:19

'' all those bunnies and chick's haven't nothing to do with Christianity''😂

Just imaging an easter tree with pictures of tortured body's hanging from it and blood and crowns of thorns...

Youmeandborisbee · 12/04/2020 13:19

I don’t celebrate Christmas the religious way. I see it as a winter festival. I despise religion and won’t have anything to do with it. Biggest cult and biggest scam out there.

Rebelwithallthecause · 12/04/2020 13:22

As a pagan I celebrate in similar ways to Christmas

It predates Christianity.

Today we shall be having a full Easter feast which is near on identical to our Christmas feast but no mince pies or Christmas pudding of course.

The egg is a pagan symbol of spring and renewal/rebirth

It celebrates the goddess Ostara which is where we get the word Easter from

bookmum08 · 12/04/2020 13:24

CovidCan there probably are trees out there that look like that......
Must. Not. Google. This.

Noodlenosefraggle · 12/04/2020 13:25

all those bunnies and chick's haven't nothing to do with Christianity''😂
I think the eggs and chicks are result of Christianity piggy backing the resurrection story onto traditional pagan spring festivals. I'm a lapsed Catholic. Easter is the only time I still feel the need to go to church. Dont know why. It must be the ritual but it feels more 'serious' than Christmas. The bunnies and eggs are the fun pagan stuff Grin
