Why do we not celebrate Easter in the same way that we celebrate Christmas?

I know that Easter is about the death and resurrection of Jesus whereas Christmas is about the birth and nativity of Jesus which is probably something that you’d celebrate more than a death!

You don’t really have to be religious to celebrate either, I wouldn’t describe myself as particularly religious, but I still like to take part in the celebrations for both because I think it’s nice and something to look forward to every year. More so Christmas!

Anyway, I know we have Easter eggs and all that, but we don’t have Easter music, Easter lights/trees/decorations and the list goes on.

Christmas seems to be more of an event because we have music, decorations and lights and we have a big Christmas dinner.

Why is this?

I think social media will create a shift in easter. People will make more effort ect. I love Easter Because it's so low key compared to Christmas. Lots of nice food, egg rolling and activities. All without the financial pressure of Christmas

I love any bank holiday. We don’t follow any religion but associate Easter with Easter eggs and Christmas with parties, presents, good food, too much to drink and time with family and friends.

I don’t do any of the Christian add-ons to Easter or Christmas - just pure mid winter and spring festivals!

I have heard Christians claim that chocolate eggs are somehow related to Christ’s tomb Hmm but seriously - why would they use a traditional fertility symbol rather than have “chocolate stones”, “chocolate crosses” or “chocolate corpses”?

Easter is based on Passover and both descend from the Spring Equinox festival.

The date of Christmas was set to make use of the pre existing winter Solstice festival.

The marketing for Easter is affected by the fact that the date can be between March 23 (still pretty cold and dark) and April 22 (very likely to be warm and sunny)

The eggs I set out for my kids to find this morning had started melting by the time they got up Grin

Love the idea of chocolate corpses! GrinGrin

I've had a chocolate rabbit cadaver already today!

My grandmother has always sent Easter cards. I think they were a Victorian tradition, just as Christmas cards are. And I'm pretty sure Easter trees or flowers in the house is a tradition that's gone on for many years too. We have German friends who have always had Easter branches with flowers woven into them in the house at Easter.

I think it's been easier to commercialise Christmas because it's one the same date every year and it's long been tradition to give varied gifts. Easter gifting has been limited to flowers and sweets for a long time and it's not as easy to convince people to go for the more varied purchasing as it is at christmas maybe. Also I think the religious element of Christmas is less apparent than it used to be. Easter is still very much seen as a very religious festival.

Easter would be a religious day if you are religious. In our house it’s always been called ‘the chocolate day’.

Easter is a lot less stressful. Buy eggs, have a nice dinner, done. People do spend it with families, but it's also ok to go on holiday at Easter or just stay at home. Far less pressure all round.

Until people start sharing their pics if trees and piles if eggs and presents....

Ginfordinner · 12/04/2020 19:10

I prefer Easter because it is at a nicer time of year, and it is less commercial. We are on BST, days are getting longer and warmer, it is cheaper and there are no expectations or pressures to provide the "perfect" meal.

I really like Easter.
