40 years & I never caught it. Boy, has it found me now. I look like something off a channel 5 documentary or text book. Light hearted due to obviously everything that’s going on, but I really am in a lot of pain & misery? Any tips to help me through the next few days? It’s on my eyelids, mouth, ears, fanjo everywhere Shock

Oatmeal baths are supposed to be soothing.

BikeRunSki · 11/04/2020 20:12

PoxClin
Get from the pharmacist or Amazon

Coldhandscoldheart · 11/04/2020 20:14

Poxclin certainly seemed to help the kids. Also you can become quite unwell with it as an adult, please don’t hesitate to seek medical help if you think you need it.

Calamine lotion, paracetamol, and lots of warm baths with sea salt worked for me. I was 27 and it was bloody awful.

I was "lucky" in that i had spots on my scalp so i scratched them to my hearts content and didnt end up with visible scars and it took away the urge to scratch any of the other spots.

FlatCheese · 11/04/2020 20:20

Antihistamine like piriton for the itching, paracetemol for temperature, poxclin or virasoothe for spots. Didn't bother with calamine when my DC had it.

ofwarren · 11/04/2020 20:21

Prescription aciclovir. Ring your doctor and they should prescribe it for you.

inthekitchensink · 11/04/2020 20:22

Thank you Flowers I’ve got oats & calamine which provides some relief, will see if can get Pox Clin. When can I expect this shit show to end Sad

inthekitchensink · 11/04/2020 20:25

@ ofwarren yes I have the anti virals, but my temperature is now up to 38.6 and paracetamol not bringing it down. Oh well hopefully can sleep the worst of it off.

strawberry2017 · 11/04/2020 20:26

Virasooth worked for my little one

strawberry2017 · 11/04/2020 20:26

And piraton x

CricketCrocket · 11/04/2020 20:27

Do not use ibruprofen!

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

queenofmycastlex · 11/04/2020 20:37

Been suggested but I second piriton or similar, the drowsy formula one will help you sleep!

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 11/04/2020 20:39

What day are you on? Please don't hesitate to go to hospital if you need to be there!! One of my children ended up on an antibiotic drip due to a secondary infection (possible sepsis as they couldn't locate the focus of infection). Couldn't control his temp either several times it was at 40.6. Glad to hear you have antivirals but don't take chances and just try to weather it through! Hope you're better soon!

Violetroselily · 11/04/2020 20:45

OP you have my sympathies, I had it at 22 and it is the worst thing I've ever experienced.

Piriton and calamine lotion took the edge off for me

FairlowWonder · 11/04/2020 20:47

Make sure it’s not actually in your eye as you’ll need eye ointment.

mineofuselessinformation · 11/04/2020 20:51

Use piroton - it will make you drowsy and also lessen the itch (use carefully if you're a single parent!)
Baths with bicarbonate of soda in.
I found calamine lotion just made mine feel worse when it dried.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 11/04/2020 20:51

Bicarbonate of soda when showering worked well when I caught it aged 28. I spent most of my day in a cool shower.

Twistedinknots · 11/04/2020 20:58

Germolene - has anaesthetic in it.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 11/04/2020 21:00

Virasoothe or calamine and aqueous cream (calamine lotion can be dryig and make the itching worse) and antihistamine.

inthekitchensink · 11/04/2020 21:30

Thank you all so much, I will keep an eye on temperature & infection & try all the remedies Flowers

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/04/2020 21:48

There used to be an anaesthetic mouthwash that my gp prescribed when I had it at19.

For some reason my parents said all the chemists were out of calamine too.

Leaving your fever might help, the virus can’t replicate at high temperatures.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 11/04/2020 21:57

Oh you poor thing. My DH had it in his 40s and it was terrible, my clearest memory of it is having to apply calamine to his testicles and perineum. I told him that it was lucky that I loved him so much.

I hope you're feeling much better soon, and also recommend an anti-histamine to help with the itching.

Mabelface · 11/04/2020 22:08

16 drops of lavender essential oil along with a good dose of bicarb in the bath will ease the itching and bring down the redness. Got cp in my 30 sand this for me through.

troppibambini · 11/04/2020 22:20

Piriton
Paracetamol
Calamine cream (better than lotion)
Poxclin
Oat baths (luke warm)

You have my sympathy dd has it at 12 and it was truly hideous.
A combination of all these helped keep it bearable for her. She said the oat baths followed by poxclin really helped.

Skyecat · 12/04/2020 00:17

I feel for you OP. The varicella-zoster (chickenpox) virus does affects adults more than children. Aciclovir is usually prescribed for five days, so should start to help depending on when you started your course of it.
