Damn near pooped my pants when it happened my whole left side of my body went numb including my face and tounge. I couldn't talk properly. I was a state went to hosp in ambulance for observation then the migraine started. Still have migraine 24 hours later but the aura symptoms have stopped.

Anyone else gets these? What's your triggers?

I used to get these, have them less often and less severe now.
Ice cream was the main issue.

GreyGardens88 · 10/04/2020 09:19

I had my first one ever earlier this week, a retinal one. I've been coughing for the past week so could have been triggered by corona

NeverYouMind123 · 10/04/2020 09:21

I get them if I don't drink enough fluids. I don't mean if I don't drink enough on one day I'll get one straight away, but if I fall out of the habit of having two or three drinks at work throughout the day eventually I'll get a migraine. I HATE it when people say it's just a headache. No it's not!

Hormones for me. I get the double whammy of awful period pain plus migraine.

Glitterball it’s rotten.

NoRoomInBed · 10/04/2020 09:21

I doubt I've had Corona as we have 2 confirmed cases where I am. And I've not been out in 4 weeks. I was fine untill it happened just had my morning decaf coffee. I'm due my AF in a couple of days I hope it's not going to be a regular thing.

Sorry, don’t know where that glitter ball came from! I meant Flowers

AnnaMagnani · 10/04/2020 09:29

So so many triggers:

Fatigue, periods, weather - storms, caffeine - don't need to avoid but if I change the amounts, alcohol, fragrance, being hungry. Those are probably the big ones. Oh and taking too many migraine tablets gave me migraines just for fun - rule with painkillers esp triptans is no more than 2 a week, anything else and I just have to sit the migraine out.

Migraine likes a boring life where you don't drink, go to bed and get up at the same time every day, and have regular healthy meals.

This is not my life! but I have controlled my migraine a lot by making lifestyle changes to make it look a lot more like it. Some factors you can't change at all - I am not responsible for a storm coming Grin but I can make sure I have my triptans in stock the whole time, take my preventers regularly, avoid stuff I know will be a problem unless I just want to party and then it's my own risk and so on.

AnnaMagnani · 10/04/2020 09:31

For me period pain plus migraine was solved by the mini-pill. No periods and no migraine - appreciate this solution won't work for everyone but it was transformative for me.

I still had all the other migraines, but having a migraine and period pain together felt especially mean.

Scootingthebreeze · 10/04/2020 10:25

My husband had the exact symptoms of a stroke and it turned out to be hemiplegic migraine. Normal triptans don't touch it. There was something like zolpedine that he had to take

FaithInfinity · 10/04/2020 10:34

My triggers are dark chocolate, goats cheese, marshmallows from Lidl (!)...stress, hormones, I had low ferritin and that made it worse. I started getting them a lot, I had problems with my neck - slipped discs - and my body took a pounding, I got referred to a neuro clinic who confirmed they were migraines. I was started on Amitriptyline as a preventative measure which helped to reduce the frequency of the migraines and the neck pain. I have triptans for if I do get migraines now which work quickly for me.

NoRoomInBed · 10/04/2020 14:29

Seems to be tapering off now as long as I dont move to quickly all I've done is sleep. Lack of sleep and stress I think is what triggered it. I have a 2 year old and a 5 month old. My eldest is 10 and she has ASD and ADHD.

did you have an MRI in the hospital? if not, insist.

Oaksquarebox · 10/04/2020 14:35

Yes. I was in an ambulance last year with a shocking migraine. Unfortunately. I am unable to pinpoint a trigger.

NoRoomInBed · 10/04/2020 14:40

No MRI we dont have one would have to transfer to another hosp 120miles away. I'm 26 and no history of stokes in family. And it fits with the migraine theory aura symtoms then the worst migraine I've ever felt.

bluebell94 · 10/04/2020 14:42

Sounds exactly like a hemiplegic migraine - I get one every couple of months but seemingly weekly since being pregnant. First time I had one I thought I was having a stroke! Absolutely horrendous. I have never identified a specific trigger (blaming hormones at the minute). Maybe being run down/very tired but not every time. I take solpadeine plus soluble tablets and they are the only thing that has ever worked for the pain and most of the associated symptoms. I can often feel a bit spaced out and dizzy for up to 48hrs after though. Keep hydrated and rest as much as you can Daffodil

Angelnix · 10/04/2020 14:44

I've suffered with migraines for years, found that one of my worst triggers is cheese and alcohol (grrr!), however, hormones also play a part, so I suffer at least once a month, but with medications I can function for a bit once I've slept.

I ended up in hospital last year with one that had gone on for four days and left me unable to move my head and with reduced vision in one eye, the GP that I saw was convinced that I had a bleed on the brain and sent me straight to A&E where I had a CT, lumber puncture and bloods, along with some good drugs and the anti-emetics!

dkanin · 10/04/2020 14:47

I struggled with them for months, very much on one side with a stabbing pain in one eye, my neck was very stiff as well. It turned out to be caused by a slipped disc in my neck. If anyone is finding nothing helps and struggling to identify the cause, this is something worth checking

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 10/04/2020 14:47

I have these and they are called hemiplegic migraine. It starts with an aura that looks like the old snake game on Nokia's! Then if I haven't been able to stop it I get numbness down one side of my face into my mouth and one hand. I get very disoriented and forget words

My triggers are stress so so have been getting them at the moment. Some smells and too much dark chocolate are also triggers.

I do feel lucky because I don't get bad headaches with them so just take paracetamol. I do have a medic alert bracelet because they mimic a stroke or being drunk.

NoRoomInBed · 10/04/2020 15:19

I've been give parpoanol (spelling) to try prevent them but it says not to give people with asthma guess what I've got? Will call gp tomorrow and go over it when hopefully the fog will be gone. I'm going for another sleep soon. The smallest things wipe me out just now. Thank you everyone. I was so scared

Was this your first one? Are you being followed up by the hospital (eventually)? That sounds quite severe and I'd be pressing for a neurologist appointment. Some hospitals have dedicated headache clinics too. Obviously everything's up the spout at the moment regarding hospital referrals.

Triggers vary enormously but screens of any sort are not good during a migraine and can set off a rebound one.

There are various long term medications if they are a severe problem eg every few days. Migraine is the pits.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 10/04/2020 16:11

Screens are a problem for me too. I can't take any medication so I just do paracetamol as soon as I see the aura. I had a lumbar puncture and scans but was told by a neurologist that it was classic hemiplegic migraine.

It sounds weird but you do get used to it and I see it as a sign I have got too stressed or tired and need to give my body and brain a break.

NoRoomInBed · 10/04/2020 16:22

My very 1st one yeah no referrals but I've been told if I get more to contact gp and theyll sort out if I need a referral. How long do the migraines stay for the kids are missing me

OP posts:
AnnaMagnani · 10/04/2020 16:26

I can't have propranolol because of asthma, and didn't tolerate amitriptylline but topiramate has been brilliant for me.

There are a lot of options out there for migraine preventers.

For screens I use the f.lux app to block blue light in the evenings. You can also change your settings on your phone to block blue light. It does look weird if you are using them after dark but you soon get used to the colour.

NoRoomInBed · 10/04/2020 18:10
