Height discrimination in modelling?

DreamChaser23 · 08/04/2020 19:29

To think this is very prevalent in both genders ? Most websites and magazines I have seen appear to do this

Men - I rarely see a guy under 5'9 most are 6ft or above

Women - Most of the women I see are very slim, and 5'7 or over.

It is a real shame to see lack of representation

Really Hmm

oohnicevase · 08/04/2020 19:35

Err it's their job to make clothes look amazing on long limbs .. to be the ideal for everyone . Can't do that if you are are shorty .. it's not meant to be a representation of real life is it !!!??

That’s why they wouldn’t take me Grin

DreamChaser23 · 08/04/2020 19:37

Yes but the average height of a man is not 6 foot and neither is the average height for a women 5'7 so what is the point of having models who don't fall into this category representation matters.

Models aren't supposed to be average, that's literally the opposite of the point of their job.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/04/2020 19:39

It is their job to make clothes look good, not realistic.

I actually like websites that use a range of models and will shop from them more. But runway? It's always going to be glorified clothes hangers.

oohnicevase · 08/04/2020 19:40

^^as above and see my posts .. supposed to be aspirational ( not that you can aspire to be taller!!)
What are you not getting??

Thesearmsofmine · 08/04/2020 19:41

High fashion models aren’t supposed to represent us, they are there to make the clothes look good,

chipsandgin · 08/04/2020 19:41

Well whilst you are on your high horse how about looks discrimination (only pretty people can be models), size discrimination (only slim people), age discrimination (mainstream magazine and catwalk models - all young) & there are barely any disabled models..

On the plus side they positively discriminate toward those with eating disorders & love a cokehead!

Of course models are taller (& tbh of course slim and pretty), because clothes/products hang better, pretty young people look healthy and make people want to buy whatever is being sold. Nothing new and whether it is fair or not it’s not that hard to understand...

ZooeyS · 08/04/2020 19:43

Are you serious?

Thankssomuch · 08/04/2020 19:43

Models are employed to show the clothes off to their best advantage in order to sell them. Actually there is more diversity in models’ appearances now than probably ever before but they do need to have certain physical attributes.

RoseLalique · 08/04/2020 19:46

It’s always been this way. Nothing new here 🤷🏻‍♀️

Waiting1987 · 08/04/2020 19:47

I thought the average woman was 5 ft 4.

thecatsthecats · 08/04/2020 20:36

I am of the belief that no, not everyone is beautiful on the outside, and yes, of course models are selected from the most beautiful amongst us.

I still think it's cocking ridiculous that a) they adhere to such narrow standards of what constitutes beauty to the point where very few catwalk models are what I'd call attractive (versus, say, actors, who are much more shaggable) and b) that the fashion industry gets away with the notion that it's a person's physical responsibility to make the clothes look good, not for the clothes to fit well to the person regardless of their size or shape.

I get why these things happen, I just don't get why people buy into it.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 08/04/2020 20:46

Martians or future generations (if we're lucky) may look back and think this was madness, but we're a long way off at the minute. Like feet binding or corset wearing.

ohdearmymistake · 08/04/2020 20:53

I don't actually think models are that pretty, but they have a certain type of look. To me some of them look down right scary/weird.

The super models were the pretty ones i.e. Cindy Crawford, Helena Christian etc.

Devlesko · 08/04/2020 20:59

It's always been the case, clothes look better on taller people, they are made that way.
I'm 4ft 11, and was never under the illusion I'd be walking down the catwalk, yet there are plenty people my size, who also couldn't model Grin
How can that be discriminating? It's like saying I can't play football but UTD should sign me.

Thankssomuch · 08/04/2020 21:07

Spot on Devlesko 😂

Mlou32 · 08/04/2020 21:08

It's perhaps reaching to call it discrimination. Does the modelling industry also practice attractiveness discrimination?

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/04/2020 21:09

Runways models look weird in real life. But magazine ones are generally very pretty in real life. I've hung out with many as a young 'un. Soooooooo insecure though. Teetering around on their baby deer legs wondering what people thought of them. While I looked entirely normal and had lots of confidence.

Thankssomuch · 08/04/2020 21:16

My son was a professional model for years and did a lot of runway work as well as magazines and so on, he isn’t insecure ( well no more than anyone else I know) and doesn’t look weird. He is very tall and thin, obvs.

BringMeTea · 08/04/2020 21:26

GrumpyHoonMain · 08/04/2020 21:31

It depends on the market. Across Asia female runway models (of all races) are often shorter and prettier in a more conventional way.

BelfastNonBlonde · 08/04/2020 21:38

I don’t think height discrimination is the only problem with the fashion / modelling industry to be fair...

What has really got my goat recently is that Most retailers can’t even be arsed to use actual pregnant women for their maternity range. They are all skinny tall girls with fake bumps stuck on the front. Or just no bumps even. Not v helpful.
