Height discrimination in modelling?

DreamChaser23 · 08/04/2020 19:29

To think this is very prevalent in both genders ? Most websites and magazines I have seen appear to do this

Men - I rarely see a guy under 5'9 most are 6ft or above

Women - Most of the women I see are very slim, and 5'7 or over.

It is a real shame to see lack of representation

You can't tell how tall someone is from a photograph.

ArthurDentsSpaceTowel · 08/04/2020 23:02

Cameras have a nasty habit of making people look shorter and wider than they really are. Widescreen telly is even worse.

People on a stage or catwalk are also going to look shorter and wider than they really are because of the angle they're viewed at.

High fashion designers are mostly gay men who would rather hang their women's clothes on figures resembling gangly adolescent boys or wire coat hangers rather than having to accommodate inconveniences like boobs and hips.

I think given these pressures it's going to take a lot more than a bit of conventional protest politics to make high fashion more inclusive. TBH we may be seeing the end of the dominance of high fashion anyway, for other reasons.

Thanks for this.

The whole point of modelling is to discriminate on the basis of looks. What next, upset over a lack of acne?

I can understand getting annoyed by a lack of ethnic diversity or age variations but I don’t see anything wrong with exclusively using beautiful people.

I don’t see any harm in using beautiful people to model clothes. I quite enjoy looking at catalogues with beautiful people in beautiful clothes.

🤦‍♀️

TooOldForSims · 08/04/2020 23:33

I get why runway models have to be tall. Not sure why catalogue and magazine models have to be though.

I'm 5'1 and not bitter at all Grin.

Geepipe · 08/04/2020 23:35

As others have said models are not supposed to be average. They are supposed to stand out and be clothes horses. Why does this bother you? Twice i had model angencies contact me on twitter about my pictures (not because i am pretty, im not but because i am very unusual looking) when they found out i am 5'2 they told me i wasnt suitable and i understood. (Not that my ugly ass wanted to be a model anyway). Not everyone can be a model otherwise the whole world would be one.

The OP isn't asking about beauty. She's asking about height.

TooOldForSims · 08/04/2020 23:38

Exactly. You still have to be a certain height to model clothes for a magazine Grin.

Breadandroses1 · 08/04/2020 23:38

I am very tall. I can confirm that the clothes they model are not available in shops or I would be able to find trousers that actually fit.

TooOldForSims · 08/04/2020 23:40

Runway models are, yes.

Not sure about models for magazines and the like which I think is what the OP is asking.

thecatsthecats · 09/04/2020 10:58

I think Rhianna has actually done excellently with her choice of models.

They are all striking and unique, and yes, diverse. They in no way look like any woman you could drag off the street in terms of height, weight or colouring. They're all very beautiful, and she's led a range that suits a range of heights and weights - small boobs, big boobs, straight/curvy, natural hair, alabaster white skin, very dark skin, big lips etc etc.

As I said upthread, it's fine to choose beauty. But I don't think it's fine - or particularly impressive - to design clothes that only look good on the hanger or a waif-thin model.

Pipandmum · 09/04/2020 11:12

The average size woman is 16 in uk isn't t it? But majority of models are size 8 or so. Simple reason why tall and slim people are used? It makes the clothes look better.

SnowsInWater · 09/04/2020 11:16

Bit like saying intelligence discrimination in MENSA.

iklboo · 09/04/2020 11:21

Height isn't a protected characteristic.

roarfeckingroar · 09/04/2020 18:55

If you don't mind discriminating by height, why such demand for plus size models?

alimauqca · 09/09/2020 19:59

Babymodels UK are a scam, they sent several emails enticing me to join and when I did join they suggested that I do a portfolio so that my daughter be part of the A-list group of babies. The portfolio was extremely expensive, the website 'member area' was never updated with jobs the staff over the phone appeared to be clueless and I was never called or messaged about any castings let a lone landing a job. A complete waste of time and money. Parents stay away from this agency!
