What's your favourite bit of your home?

Since we're all (largely) homebound, I'm curious: what's the thing in your house that you love most or are most grateful for right now?

Anything goes, fancy or totally commonplace: a room, a window, the squeak on the bathroom door, an object, a piece of furniture, a smell...

I'll kick us off with a few of mine:

  • I can watch the sunrise over the sea from my back door. Takes my breath away Every. Single. Morning.
  • My fridge occasionally makes a sound like a tiny indignant elephant (I've named him Frankie)
  • The thick-pile rug beside my bed; the feeling of my toes sinking into it first thing in the morning is HEAVEN (the rest of my bedroom floor is stone and cold in the mornings)

What about you?

The balcony window in my bedroom, floods it with light and lets me look at the trees.

Spied · 08/04/2020 17:28

My mattress.
I spent years with springy uncomfortable ones.

Lampan · 08/04/2020 17:28

Lots of things but I love that every room but one has a south-west facing window and my bedroom also has a window that faces the sunrise. Also my decision to get a big comfy chair in my kitchen - it’s not a big house so being able to chill in different rooms is a real benefit at the moment.

EL8888 · 08/04/2020 17:30

Bedroom. You can see the sea from it, it’s light with huge windows. Which is lovely when it’s sunny

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/04/2020 17:30

Currently very grateful for my garden although normally I find it a chore.

We have a big front yard (it's like a prison yard) and again, normally I hate it but I imagine if we get further lockdown restrictions I will love it as i can actually run a decent distance doing laps.

We have an east facing garden so I have always loved the movement of the sun from the back to the front.

Weirdly enough, my home office!

I worked from home for 16 years pre early retirement and used to lock the door as soon as I had finished for the day but had to keep going back in to check if the bloody red light was flashing on the ansaphone meaning I needed to make an urgent call. ☹️ I could never really relax 100%!

Once I retired I completely redecorated same in a light, bright neutral shade. Bought all new furniture, new carpet etc. It looks nothing like my old working days and I now leave the door wide open much of the time as it is so beautiful and flooded with light from the gorgeous window. ❤️

LuvMyBoyz · 08/04/2020 17:31

The conservatory which we use as a day room.

The shutters in our white bedroom. We open them to flood the room with soft light every morning now the morning is lighter.

Pinkchocolate · 08/04/2020 17:32

My door because it leads me out of here. It’s too small for us and I’m feeling it now more than ever.

cptartapp · 08/04/2020 17:33

Probably bedroom. Large dual aspect windows with open fields to all sides. Can sit in bed and watch the horses in the summer.

PoptartPoptart · 08/04/2020 17:34

My ridiculously expensive but worth every penny mattress. Soooooo comfy.

My larger than average garden (but not huge, before anyone accuses me of boasting) with a big old tree.

The spare bedroom. It’s only a box room but it allows me to escape and not worry about waking DH up when I wake at 3am and can’t go back to sleep.

DramaAlpaca · 08/04/2020 17:37

My conservatory. After years of it being at various times over the years a playroom, a gym and storage for DH's bikes, I've finally got it back, done it up and now it's a lovely room to sit in and enjoy views of the garden at one side and the hills on the other. It's my favourite room.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 08/04/2020 17:37

The huge patio we had laid in January. We only had a wide path along back of house before.
It feels like part of the house rather than part of the garden

Longdistance · 08/04/2020 17:43

The walk in pantry. If my dds get on my nerves or I want some chocolate, I close the door and hide Blush

OuterMongolia · 08/04/2020 18:03

I love my kitchen. We replaced the old one two years ago and I absolutely love it now. Which is lucky, as I'm wfh and my desk is now the kitchen table!

CoolCarrie · 08/04/2020 18:10

The view from our bedroom window over the garden to the palm trees and other trees in the park opposite, watching the squirrels climb the trees and the birds settling in the branches. We can sit on the wee balcony and have our breakfast and watch the wild life.

Waitingfirgodot · 08/04/2020 18:13

The stable door in my kitchen. I can leave the top open and keep and eye on the children/dog. I didn't even notice it when we viewed the house, so it was like an added bonus!

DeanImpala67 · 08/04/2020 18:20

My kitchen, recently re- painted the units and it is so much more our style now, and the new carpet in the lounge - so cushiony and wonderful. And the new dining table and chairs. We've basically just done up most of the downstairs and I am so glad we did it before lockdown as it still brings me joy.

QuimJongUn · 08/04/2020 21:25

The corner of our bedroom which has me and DH's guitars/amps etc in it. So much solace in music right now.

Our bookshelves. We have thousands of books, many of which are like old friends and are very comforting.very

The kitchen window. It has a wide sill and a glorious view to the sea and Scottish borders (we're on the fourth floor). We've festooned it with fairy lights and candles, bought a couple of barstools and me and DH go to our 'bar' every Friday and Saturday night. We even dress up to meet each other! It's especially lovely on warm evenings with the window open, and in the mornings when I'm having my coffee. We have no outdoor space to it's become really important to us.

ladybee28 · 08/04/2020 21:45

Loving these – I feel like I can picture all of your favourite spots!

@QuimJongUn your 'bar' sounds HEAVENLY - what a lovely way to bring dating indoors!

Loving how many of us are appreciating our windows and gardens – I'm definitely extra-tuned in to the outdoors these days...

My kitchen. It’s not huge but every kitchen I had previously was the size of a box room. So it’s lovely now to have one that has ample space for a table without feeling cramped. Plenty of work surfaces etc.

My ceiling rose and decorative moulding in the living room, it’s all original and would cost £££ to buy now. I feel they really add character.

My expensive bean to cup coffee machine that I bought as an indulgent treat with a small windfall I got. Now more than ever I appreciate being able to make a proper cappuccino or latte.

MuseumOfYou · 08/04/2020 22:22

Our garden is an absolute haven at the moment. We live in an old mill house in the middle of nowhere, half a mile from the nearest house and surrounded by about 5 acres of meadow and woodland with a stream running through the middle. It's a bitch to mow and waterlogged much of the year but on a warm lockdown day in spring, it's a joy.

SpaceCadet4000 · 08/04/2020 22:28

The sun sets over our back garden behind some trees and it always looks beautiful.

We just bought new furniture for our living room and everything just looks so nice and to our tastes now. It's just so nice to sit in!

We have a big deck in our garden. It's not quite there yet, but I know it's going to be amazing when we've added lots of lovely plants (growing from seeds we already had) in containers.

DinosApple · 08/04/2020 22:29

One sofa that is always in the sun in our living room (I had a sneaky nap).

The tiles in our kitchen, and underfloor heating. So cosy.

The garden, it's DH's domain but when the weather is good, it's just beautiful.

Ltdannygreen · 08/04/2020 22:38

At the moment non of it, I’ve had enough of all of it.... just wanna get out for more than 10 minutes at a time

Collision · 08/04/2020 22:42

My beautiful living room wall......
