Military jets over Manchester

PunkAssMoFo · 08/04/2020 16:33

Sat in the garden trying to get the last rays of sunshine before my neighbours giant tree takes over. I’ve counted 4 massive military jets flying over in the last hour. Delivering covid supplies maybe?

Do army jets show up on flight radar24?

🤦🏼‍♀️

willowhazel · 08/04/2020 17:13

It's been over us near Gloucester and is heading back round for another fly past. I think they want to see me in my bikini sunbathing in the garden.

Likethebattle · 08/04/2020 17:33

My neighbour arrived back from deployment on Monday (what a time to come home) maybe these were the planes that brought them back going back over. Manchester makes sense as we are in Scotland.

Thighmageddon · 08/04/2020 17:40

I love watching military aircraft. I love relatively near an RAF base so you’d think it’d get old but I love looking out my windows at the sound of a Chinook trying to spot it

We do too, never gets old.

Accidentally finding yourself on the flight path near the runway when a C17 comes in to land is an incredible experience.

CaptainNancy1 · 08/04/2020 18:28

I live near Manchester Airport and was wondering what the activity was.
bellinisurge no one is panicking we're interested. No need to be so rude.

bellinisurge · 08/04/2020 18:33

Perhaps a mention of a planned morgue without any apparent irony is just fine then. 🤷‍♀️

iklboo · 08/04/2020 18:43

The PP mentioned supplies for the planned (and documented) morgue. How you extrapolated everybody panicking like headless chickens from that ONE post is beyond me.

Davespecifico · 08/04/2020 18:47

I saw a grey plane come over my garden in Eccles. Thought it was probably some form of supply carrier.
I haven’t noticed anyone panicking on this thread. Why might someone think they were?

Redshoeblueshoe · 08/04/2020 18:53

There were Chinooks coming out of City airport yesterday, I think it was covered in the Manchester Evening News

Madvixen · 08/04/2020 18:54

It's really rare that the RAF can use civilian airports for training runs so they'll be taking advantage of the quiet time and letting pilots get experience of different types and lengths of runways

Redshoeblueshoe · 08/04/2020 18:55

Dave as City airport is virtually in your back garden I expect that's what you saw

MintyMabel · 08/04/2020 18:57

Once found ourselves under an AWACS. It was fabulous.

Devlesko · 08/04/2020 19:07

RAF, Army, other British Armed services?
Does anyone know?
America have military ffs, we have armed services. Why do we have to copy America all the time.

Oldraver · 08/04/2020 19:12

Ha that is why it's been relatively quiet at mine. Have only seena couple of planes today.

These things are usually buzzing me at 1000ft while I'm hanging out my washing

Oldraver · 08/04/2020 19:18

And with Flight Radar...sometimes they show up RAF aeroplanes soemtimes not.

I frequently hear one on the ground taxi-ing/taking off then see it out my window but it doesn't show up on FR. Otehrs do

I've yet to see American B52's show up on FR. I usually hear them in the distance then feel the windows rattling

BarbaraofSeville · 08/04/2020 19:22

It's part of the emergency plan. The country has 'National Emergency Mortuary Arrangements' in case there's any sort of event where there might be more bodies to deal with than the normal provisions can cope with, so dignity and health and hygiene can be maintained in such circumstances.

As there might be more deaths than normal due to COVID-19, they are erecting several of their emergency mortuaries across the country, just in case. Like they are building lots of extra temporary hospitals, so they are there if they are needed. Prepping, rather than panicking and it all going wrong, because any sort of 'just in time' system can fall over rather quickly, as half the country has discovered with toilet roll and bean supplies.

Quite a way from their normal stomping ground.

Sitting at the end of a runway when a jumbo jet takes off is not to be recommended.

Redshoeblueshoe · 08/04/2020 19:46

Manchester Airport is trending on Twitter. With clips of the military aircraft.

bellinisurge · 08/04/2020 19:53

@BarbaraofSeville , I know that. But according to the majority of this thread, it's the thread for light hearted discussion of interesting planes and me saying calm the fuck down is contrary to the spirit of this thread. Again shrugging shoulders time.

Devlesko · 08/04/2020 20:04

We are greater Manc and didn't hear anything and been out sun bathing most of the day.
It musn't have come as far as us.

Dyrne · 08/04/2020 20:09

In fairness to bellinisurge; given the amount of threads on here flapping about how their brother’s hairdresser’s uncle shared a Facebook post from someone who’s mate is “very high up in the military/NHS” and who is certain that a lockdown is imminent and we’re going to be under Military Rule and tanks are going to be driving up the high street as of Tuesday...

I think they can be forgiven for thinking this was the 27252nd thread about it rather than idle speculation about planes Grin

I'm so glad I deactivated my fb account Grin

Oldraver · 08/04/2020 21:53

Well at least one of the C17's are back home...well at least flying over and over my garden

MrsCastiel · 08/04/2020 22:09

I'm near Warrington and we often have Chinooks flying over. Also 4 really loud smaller military helicopters. At least once a week, sometimes once a day.

Within the last year the helicopters (not Chinooks) were using 2 of Warrington's town parks to do low level flying / landing exercises. Facebook was alight with speculating about terrorism, another war, the end of the world. The local paper contacted the MOD who were quite breezy about it being a training exercise for maneuvering in built up areas.

Every now and then the Chinook lands at Victoria Park in the town, again a training exercise.

Chesntoots · 08/04/2020 22:11

I live about 15 mins from the Robin Hood airport and am used to hearing them every day, and hadn't noticed the lack of planes until today. I was sitting outside and heard one go over. It seemed very odd. I hope that makes sense!
