So sorry I misunderstood I didn't think that made sense for you to be a "vegetarianism is boring" person. Blush

Forgive me?

I am enjoying my late cold plate supper very much.

I love strong, pungent flavours.

Weedsnseeds1 · 26/04/2020 22:18

No worries, was just a bit concerned you thought I was having a dig at vehetariansSmile
I love food in all its forms!

Weedsnseeds1 · 26/04/2020 22:27

Aotocorrect is going to finish me off long before coronavirus! Grin

Cool didn't think that matched!

It's bloody insane substitutions are gonna finish me off!

Been drinking milk instead of my usual water all day and I feel ready to explode!

Next week...

Egg explosions! Grin

@Graphista I totally agree on the vegetarian foods front. I've just passed my one year veggie anniversary and I am constantly finding new things to try, have loads of cookbooks and rarely struggle with takeaways or eating out.

Back in the 90s I tried to go vegetarian, I think I was about 15. It was quorn mince or vegetables. And trying to get a veggie meal in a restaurant or pub was like you say, vegetarian lasagne or omelette. It always reminds me of that episode of the royale family where Emma is a vegetarian "ooh can she have wafer thin ham??" 😂

cricketmum84 · 27/04/2020 08:43

Managed to get a whole chicken in Lidl yesterday so DH and DCs are having jerk chicken, rice & peas and some sort of side salad (depending on what comes in today's veg delivery)

I enjoyed the cauliflower steak so much last night that I'm going to do the same again tonight but with jerk seasoning instead of ras-el-hanout and have the same sides as them.

Xiaoxiong · 27/04/2020 08:51

Ok this is not very frugal but I have just bought two 0.7kg lobsters from a day fishing boat over Instagram Grin Usually they sell to restaurants or the Continent so they are trying to develop a domestic market and will deliver to my door within 24 hours of catch at sea and cut out the middleman so the profit goes to the fisherman.

Dinner tonight is nasi goreng cooked using last night's leftover pork from our joint and then I will be boiling up the bone to make pea & ham soup the next day.

cricketmum84 · 27/04/2020 09:01

*royle not royale!! Another autocorrect moment...

PurpleDaisies · 27/04/2020 09:01

How’s everyone doing today? Dh is in work and the house is really quiet. It’s funny that this is exactly what a normal day would be here but I don’t like it at all. I’m thinking of cooking some nice things to cheer myself up and make a dent in Potato Mountain. Haven’t decided what yet.

Sultana or Swing yet to start doing anything but it’s only been a day or two. Thinking I need more patience.

cricketmum84 · 27/04/2020 09:07

I've been given a free day off work which feels weird. I was doing 17 hour days last week (6am to 1.30am anyone??) so now it's eased off I'm getting a break.

Thinking I might make and freeze some soups with my free time as I still have quite a bit of veg leftover from last weeks delivery and due a new box today. Thinking parsnip and Apple? And something spicy, carrot and ginger or a cauliflower cheese or leek and potato.

Open to recipes if anyone has any ideas? I have:
Sad spinach
Broccoli
Cauliflower
2 parsnips
Apples
Pears
Carrots
Onions
Leek
Potatoes

Weedsnseeds1 · 27/04/2020 09:38

PurpleDaisy if you have it in a bottle, give it a good shake then release the cap, you will probably hear a bit of fizz.
I have a date and walnut loaf proving and planning a noodle soup for tonight.

PurpleDaisies · 27/04/2020 09:38

I love parsnip and apple soup. Definitely make that.

I’d make sag aloo with the spinach, onions and potatoes. I’d probably stick the leek in it too. Disclaimer: since I had it as part of my weekend take away, it’s all I can think about. Blush

PurpleDaisies · 27/04/2020 09:39

I’ve got it in a bowl with a cloth cover weeds. It does smell slightly fruity. Hopefully that’s the start of something happening!

Weedsnseeds1 · 27/04/2020 09:40

All the talk of fresh crab was getting me jealous enough - now LOBSTER Grin

Xiaoxiong · 27/04/2020 09:52

Weeds get yourself over to Pesky Fish! If they're sold out today, check back each morning: www.peskyfish.co.uk/shop-1

Soup ideas:

Parsnip & Apple
Curried cauliflower
Broccoli stilton (or cheddar)
Carrot & ras al hanout (and lentils, if you have any)
Leek & potato with gruyere and/or bacon on top for a bit of a tartiflette vibe

magnarocks · 27/04/2020 10:06

Have you used Pesky Fish in the past @Xiaoxiong? Very excited by it! 😆 I've signed up for updates.

Leftovers for lunch today, lots of salad bits and bagels.

Then Instant Pot 'Baharat chicken' for dinner with tabbouleh and more salad. (Trying not to become the size of a house in lockdown, it's hard!)

LaMarschallin · 27/04/2020 10:11

@PurpleDaisies

Sultana or Swing yet to start doing anything but it’s only been a day or two

Ooh! You've used that name! Even though I mistakenly posted to Weeds and slunk off all Blush
So pleased Smile

Actually came on to share a tip I read recently and tried out yesterday.
Apologies if you all know it anyway.

Anyway: Onions Without Tears.
Apparently, the chemicals released by onions when they're cut dissolve in water to form tear-causing chemicals.
Usually, the first source of water is in your eyes. However, if you keep your knife blade wet, most of the chemicals dissolve in that water.
I just rinsed the blade 3 or 4 times per (large) onion when preparing them last night and it really made a difference Shock
They were old onions too and I find those worse for inducing tears; I've wondered if the chemicals become more concentrated due to water evaporation, or maybe they just build up.

Thinking back, I've read about holding a bit of bread in your mouth while chopping onions, which sounded mad. But maybe that absorbs some of the bad stuff on it's way to your eyes?
Also, heard of peeling them underwater which would now make sense. But I'm attached to my fingers - and I'd like it to stay that way.
Sounded very awkward (at least for someone as clumsy as me).

I don't post very often but still thoroughly enjoying this inspiring thread.
Flowers all.

Weedsnseeds1 · 27/04/2020 10:14

Thanks for the link Xiaoxiong.
I will have to wait until I have freed up a bit of fridge space, but I am definitely going to buy some - they had turbot too ( sold out at the moment but will keep my beady eye on it)!

Weedsnseeds1 · 27/04/2020 10:16

LaMarschallin I have been known to wear swimming goggles ic I get a really strong one!

Xiaoxiong · 27/04/2020 10:24

LeMarschallin when I wear contacts I don't cry at all with onions. When I wear glasses - waterworks!! So something about the water and gas permeability of contact lenses gives protection so wetting your knife makes total sense.

I haven't personally used Pesky Fish because until now they've sold only to restaurants. I heard about them from a fisherman down in Cornwall who had used them and said he got more % of the profit with them, because they just used social media to sell the fish and then put it on the train to be delivered next day so much fresher and lower margins. Now lockdown has happened they are trying to pivot to sell to domestic customers so I want to give them a market. It's mad that there is nowhere in this country more than 70 miles from the sea and yet so much of our fish is sold abroad, while we import fish from thousands of miles away without pricing in the externalities of overfishing, carbon emissions, etc.

(I work in sustainable investment...)

cricketmum84 · 27/04/2020 11:08

Yes totally agree about the contact lens thing! I'm not allowed to wear contacts at the moment and chopping onions is way more painful than with them.

Tried the wet knife thing though and there was definitely a difference.

LaMarschallin · 27/04/2020 11:36

Actually, yes, I can see the reasoning behind both of those, Weeds and Xiaoxiong.
Trouble is, I don't have swimming goggles and I'm not very good at seeing close up in my contacts. Although, a combination of contacts plus my reading glasses should really sort the noxious stuff out!

Glad it worked for you, cricketmum. A nuisance though that you can't wear your contacts. Hope your poor eyes get better soon.

Spam88 · 27/04/2020 12:17

I thought I'd become immune to onions. Then I stopped wearing contacts...

Weedsnseeds1 · 27/04/2020 14:33

Wholemeal date and walnut loaf made with Cofig19 yeast.
Managed to find some razor blades, so I could have a go at fancy slashing!

Frugal Foodies, thread 2! Favourite leftover dishes, avoiding waste, menu ideas.
Ninkanink · 27/04/2020 15:05

Oh I love the fancy slashing!

This week is using-up week for the longer-dated refrigerated items I bought in the week or two before lockdown, when we didn’t really know what was going to happen. So today we’ve had ready made Spanish tortilla with a quick stew made with one Spanish-style chicken leg that I had frozen about a month ago, plus a half tin of cannelloni beans, a tomato that was past eating fresh and some chicken cooking juices and fat saved from the two-tone peri peri chicken I did the other day, for extra flavour. Served with the last two part baked rolls from a pack I opened a week ago.
