What are you doing with glass that could be recycled atm?

Usually we just take it to a bottle bank but we’ve been isolating and the wine (ahem) bottles are starting to stack up!

Our bin men take all recycling bar glass so into the general waste?

Our council isn't recycling anything now so we're just putting everything in the bin. Don't know what else we can do. The only thing that makes me feel slightly better about doing so is that it's proving wrong all the fuckwits jawing on about how great coronavirus is for the environment.

ExpletiveDelighted · 08/04/2020 07:29

Is there info on your council website? Ours is still collecting everything but are putting out regular updates.

alliejay81 · 08/04/2020 07:35

We're creating more rubbish and recycling than the council are collecting at the moment. I had a little cry when I realised (might have lost perspective there for a bit).

No advice (although I might start storing in the car boot) here in case anyone else has any bright ideas!

Hollywhiskey · 08/04/2020 07:39

We put it in the recycling bin outside to wait for regular collections. Our council is only taking rubbish, no recycling at all until further notice. They have generously upped our black bag allowance to four per fortnight instead of three. I have one in nappies and one potty training so there is no choice. Luckily we have outside space but if we lived in a flat we'd have to stack it somewhere, there's no choice at all.

MoonBaby1 · 08/04/2020 07:39

Grin car boot is as creative as I’ve managed!

I have some space where I can store recycling to be collected later. I'm prioritising things that I understand can easily be recycled like cardboard, tin cans and glass. If I chuck things away, it will be things that I suspect are harder to deal with and will end up in landfill anyway like tetrapacks.

Also trying some no-dig gardening using bigger pieces of cardboard as mulch.

TheDrsDocMartens · 08/04/2020 07:41

Our charity bags are going in the car so guess I’d do car boot too

horlicksbabe · 08/04/2020 07:44

We have put it in the shed, the council aren't collecting any recycling, the tip is closed and they have said they won't collect any extra bags or bins where the lid isn't completely closed

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/04/2020 07:51

I didn't realise this was happening until this thread but I've just checked and glass collection is suspended here too. Next door is going to have a shock. They put out the most enormous container last night of what must have been about 100 wine bottles. If they've been partying they've been doing it very quietly!

Ours will have to go in the shed for now. If this carries on for the next few months they are going to mount up!

Useryokyesno · 08/04/2020 07:51

Our council are just doing normal recycling.

Pelleas · 08/04/2020 07:53

Thankfully our recycling is still going and includes glass.

Ferfooksek · 08/04/2020 07:55

In the regular bin. This could go on for months. I don’t have space

SisterA · 08/04/2020 08:00

We are just planning to drop off at one of the glass bins dotted around when going out for a food shop - is that an option for you? Our recycling tips are closed but there are a few glass/textiles bins dotted around the village so at least we can quick detour when going shopping.

Santaclauswhosthat · 08/04/2020 08:00

I don't have space either. Also there is going to be a domestic vermin problem before too long especially in cities where rats etc are used to rich pickings in now deserted places so I'm not having any waste hanging around.

Orchardgreen · 08/04/2020 08:03

I went to our large Sainsbury’s which takes recycling. 9 am before the shop opened. Park right next to the bins, wore gloves and just popped the bottles in the slots. Don’t need to touch anything other than the car and the bottles.

FunnyInjury · 08/04/2020 08:07

There is a mix glass bottle bank opposite my house, bit of a random placement tbh, but it does get used and council emptied a few days ago.
Everywhere will be different 🤷‍♀️

countrygirl99 · 08/04/2020 08:17

Our village bottle bank is full so glass is piling up outside the back door. Landing has 3 boxes of stuff for the charity shop, all 3 compost bins are full, garden waste bin is full and we have such a big pile for the tip we've decided we need a skip. It's not that we had been putting off tidying jobs, honest.

Sexnotgender · 08/04/2020 08:19

It’s going in the garage right now so that we can go to the bottle bank once we’re able.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 08/04/2020 08:25

Glass isn't taken for recycling from kerbside, we have to take it to a bottle bank so ours is going into boxes in one of the sheds. Other recycling is still being taken.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 08/04/2020 08:27

Our recycling going as usual but we dont have much glass so it’s not an issue if they stop. It’s cardboard and plastic for us mainly.

maidenover · 08/04/2020 08:30

How long are you isolating for? We just took ours to the bottle bank when we went to the supermarket.

OfDragonsDeep · 08/04/2020 08:30

Our bottle bank is in the supermarket car park, so I just dropped them off when doing my shopping. I don’t have room to store them at home.

simbobs · 08/04/2020 08:32

Gosh, how different in different parts of the country. There is no change for us at the moment, and our council does collect glass in the mixed recycling bin. I would go out and do it, as other have suggested - provided that you drive, otherwise can you leave it outside for a friend to take for you?

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/04/2020 08:39

where they have suspended glass collection that is likely to include the collection bins in public places. It does here. All glass collection suspended and residents asked to keep it until collections resume.

MoonBaby1 · 08/04/2020 08:41

My dh is shielding and I’m very high risk too so non of us has been to a shop or anywhere other than an isolated rural walk (we live very rurally) for almost 4 weeks.

It is interesting to see how other councils do it.
