Is mac and cheese hard to make?

I had a beef burger from a restaurant that had a mac and cheese patty on it. Just pressed into a burger shape and coated in breadcrumbs.

I really fancy it again but place is obviously closed now.

No! So easy! Cook pasta, make cheese sauce, combine the two, add more cheese and breadcrumbs and put in oven/under grill until brown. That's it!

Besom · 07/04/2020 17:15

Mac and cheese is easy. Dunno about a mac anx cheese burger.

I like a macaroni pie myself.

Cactuscube · 07/04/2020 17:16

Yeah I'm not sure how they got it to hold together

I'd imagine they froze the macaroni cheese in patty shapes before crumbing it

floppybit · 07/04/2020 17:18

@Besom a macaroni pie, eh? Enlighten us!

TeaMilkNoSugarThanks · 07/04/2020 17:19

You make it with slightly less runny sauce, cool it, then compact it into a patty. If you let it go cold it pretty much sets hard enough to cut into slices.

The key to a good Macaroni Cheese is, IMHO, a good spoon of wholegrain mustard. And breadcrumbs on the top. This is totally what we're having for tea tonight.

Mac and cheese is v easy. Cheese sauce, pasta, in the oven, top with cheese, off you go.

To make the patty you'd need to chill the Mac and cheese after cooking, then it will be easy to cut into a patty.

I’d make it but with a thicker sauce (more flour and cheese). Put in metal ring ( could use pastry cutter)and top with cheese and bread crumbs. Then chill really well before baking.

FlibbertyGiblets · 07/04/2020 17:20

Macaroni pie is a food of the gods.

Very simple.

Cook macaroni (or any small shape pasta) to just about soft but not too soft.

Melt a spoon full of butter in a pan on a low heat

Add 6 spoons of flour to make a paste and keep stirring it.. On the low heat

After a minute or so gradually add milk to it.. Half a pint slowly and turn the heat up

Once its thickened to a sauce add grated cheese and stir til all melted

I add a teaspoon of mustard and a pinch of pepper

Chuck the pasta in and stir it up to make sure its all coated

Put it in an ovenproof dish and add more grated cheese on top

Bake for about 15 mins at a medium heat in the oven

Madcats · 07/04/2020 17:21

That sounds interesting (so I googled).

The key seems to be to get the mix in a thin layer on a baking sheet/tray, chill it...., then cut to shape.

Make your macaroni cheese as normal. Chill any leftovers in the fridge for a day or two. Shape as required. Dip in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs. Bake for 10 mins, add some olive oil, bake for another 10.

Makes delicious mac’n’cheese bites if you roll into balls

You can also season the flour or the breadcrumbs too.

This is the easiest cheese sauce recipe I've found. It is incredibly quick to make. I add a tsp of mustard to mine. Stir into cooked, drained macaroni. Have never tried to form into a patty shape, but it tends to solidify as it cools

Who said macaroni pie??? I've not had one of those for years but now I'm desperate for one, dammit!!

Besom · 07/04/2020 17:37

BigGee - sorry!

Curoi · 07/04/2020 17:37

I can make it and I'm someone who manages to muff fairy cakes up

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 07/04/2020 17:41

Cheese sauce is really simple - melt butter in a saucepan, add a tablespoon of flour and half teaspoon of English mustard powder, whisk like hell over the heat and allow to cook out for a couple of minutes, then add milk gradually, bring to the boil then cook until thickened. Add shit loads of cheese, the stronger the better. You can add ale to it too, but I prefer the consistency without.

PapsofJura · 07/04/2020 17:46

My mum used to just mix in grated cheese to the pasta and my kids prefer it to the normal kind. Saves a lot of faff making a cheese sauce!

Easy cheese sauce without a roux - melt some cream cheese (Philadelphia or similar) into freshly cooked hot pasta, add a little warm water/milk to make it saucy then add loads of strong cheese for flavour and stir over heat until it all mixes together. Yum!

helpfulperson · 07/04/2020 18:23

Macaroni pies are absolutely amazing

Connie222 · 07/04/2020 18:46

I cheat and just use lasagne sauce and grated cheese.

Connie222 · 07/04/2020 18:47

*white lasagne sauce from a jar. So probably not as nice but quick.

Madcats · 07/04/2020 19:10

Thinking about the pies (which look lovely, but prob not great for cholesterol and carb watchers), my best mate at Uni in the 80's had a sandwich maker and we used to make (tinned macaroni cheese) cheese toasties when we couldn't justify buying a slab of cheese.

Do they even make tinned macaroni cheese now? It was awesome.

Connie222 · 07/04/2020 19:15

@Madcats Heinz macaroni cheese in a tin is delicious!
