He has this '' thing '' where occasionally food gets stuck. He can breathe, obviously, it's just usually it moves within hours and Rarely over night.. He's had it overnight, anyone have this and have any tips?.

He's bounced on trampolines, puked copious times...

He's actually got hospital appt for this later this month.

Would diaazopam help to relax the gullet?

In all honesty I usually have to stick my fingers down my throat until I throw it up but even then, sometimes it feels like I'm moving the blockage to a place where it's entirely closing my airways and I panic about completely choking. It's a horrible experience

EricaNernie · 06/04/2020 08:28

how about some bread?
when you eat fish with bones you are meant to eat bread, to help any mistakenly swallowed bones down

I don't want to frighten anyone on the thread, but I feel I need to mention this.

My friend used to get food lodged in her oesophagus, which would eventually work it's way through. Turned out she had oesophagul cancer, and the food was getting stuck on a tumour. I don't want to cause alarm, but I do think if this happens regularly and you haven't had it investigated, you maybe should.

wherethewildthingis · 06/04/2020 08:31

Husband had this for years, eventually had a camera down throat and there were polyps there, benign. Now had them removed and the problem is solved

slipperywhensparticus · 06/04/2020 08:32

How is he feeling today OP?

Bornfreebutincovidchains · 06/04/2020 08:44

Toll years ago he had endoscopy and nothing came back but it seems to me, now people are mentoring all these thing ls it could be that he simply hasn't been in right medical area.

He said he feels OK... Hes playing x box... Occasionally jumping up and down...

I have this and it's horrible if something gets properly stuck. I had one last year which lasted a few days (a piece of chicken) and I eventually shifted it by swallowing sips of water while lying on my back, then side and then front. I think getting it down rather than up would be better - I think I made my oesophagus swell a bit by trying to throw it up, which made it even harder! Good luck to your husband - let us know how he gets on.

My Dh had to visit our local A&E for another issue a couple of weeks ago I too was concerned about him keeping away but it was a,potential medical emergency , our A&E are keeping Covid and Non Covid patients separate I expect most of no all A&E,s are?

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 06/04/2020 08:59

My brother gets this.

Always with meat. Lasts hours and hours, he salivates, pukes, it's awful.

I believe he may have an narrowing off his oesophagus. He did get referred to a gastroenterologist but nothing came of it.

I can't suggest anything about from GP and referral eventually.

missyB1 · 06/04/2020 09:07

Just wanted to say the specialist he needs is a Gastroenterologist, they deal with this stuff all the time.

X2 boys

Because we can't test for corona I've definitely read accounts of people with suspected corona on same a and e and moved when tests come back when they have already been around people...

This happens to me . I started to take very very small bites and chew it to absolute mush and swallow followed by a sip of water. My dinner is always stone cold by the time I'm halfway through but better than getting stuck.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/04/2020 09:34

It was an ENT consultant who sorted my mum out. She said the procedure was unpleasant But bearable. Though you get sedated.

She certainly found some foods triggered it more than others. Meat and rice iirc.

Oddly years later i had friends over for dinner and it happened to one of them, with meat. Turned out he had acalesia as well. Again tne stretching procedure worked well for him.

Bornfreebutincovidchains · 06/04/2020 09:57

Vetti he will watch his sizes after this, but after a few weeks one does forget and he does tend to wolf food down. Chuck it in

It was his favorite too, burger and sausage. He only had 2 bites!

Viva, thank you!

It's still stuck. He's been for a run, had a relaxing bath and is now trying to sleep. Doesn't want to call doctor and doesn't want to go to a and e. Said he'll see how he feels later.

Foldinglaundry and Vettiy have you both sought medical advice for this problem?

VettiyaIruken · 06/04/2020 15:14

No, ive always just thought it was down to not chewing properly. It's so much better now with tiny bites all mashed up and a drink.

TheFallenMadonna · 06/04/2020 15:19

DH had this before christmas. He had to have an endoscopy procedure to remove the blockage (after 60 hours with no food or drink because it wouldn't resolve), and had biopsies taken which confirmed eosinphilic esohagitis. He takes omeprazole to stop the inflammation.

slipperywhensparticus · 06/04/2020 15:26

He is going to need to contact a doctor

Foldinglaundryisnotforme · 06/04/2020 15:27

I've had an endoscopy for an unrelated stomach issue but the only thing mentioned was a hiatus hernia. I think I definitely need to speak to the doctor again and find out about these stretching procedures

EgonSpengler2020 · 06/04/2020 15:31

Get him to sip Coca-Cola even if he ends up coughing/wretching it up, then get him to sip a bit more, repeat until it clears. This works for even the worst blockages of red meat. It has been shown to be as effective, if not more, than endoscopy for stuck food boluses. It might put you off coke for life!!

He should see a gp at some point regarding why it is happening.

CavalierJessica27 · 06/04/2020 15:32

Think, he needs to be seen by ENT team.
Please seek advice.

Bornfreebutincovidchains · 06/04/2020 15:37

@egonspendler

Why Coke?. Is it because it dissolves it?. Its just the risk of the shop?

I had this for about a year. Food would get stuck going down and I could feel it. Would try to dislodge with a drink, and the liquid would just come straight back up. It got so bad at one point I ended up choking when out for a meal and someone had to give me hiemlich manoeuvre. It was extraordinarily scary.
After loads of tests, turns out my thyroid gland was massively enlarged. I've been on thyroxine for 20 years but my levels had gone bananas following pregnancy and medication levels needed changed.
Apparent, it's quite common so may be worthwhile speaking to Gp about getting a thyroid test for an overactive thyroid
