My mum died earlier this year and he is heartbroken at home. My sister and I live in different cities to him and each other.

He loves films from 50s and 60s but I can't find anywhere that shows them. I've searched ROKU, Prime, Netflix etc. Can anyone please help?

Nonnymum · 05/04/2020 14:09

Talking Pictures TV on free view channel 81 is great for ad films and TV. They also advertise dvd sets of old films. I'm sure they have a website you might be able to search.

Guiltypleasures001 · 05/04/2020 14:09

AllAboutHallowsEve · 05/04/2020 14:14

Britbox have some classic films. You can watch on a smart TV or an app on Ipad. Not a huge collection but worth trying the free trial for a month.

ArriettyJones · 05/04/2020 14:18

You can actually check the Amazon selection by searching for specific actors, directors or titles on the main Amazon website and see what shows up as “free with Amazon Prime”.

They really do have a huge selection of older films and it took me ages to realise. I love classic films on Sundays Smile

I found Italian films on youtube all under 1 listing - many well known ones from that era including Fellini. Cant remember the search title though and I have looked at my Youtube history. .

mmmammma · 05/04/2020 14:26

I don't have a subscription but have heard the british film institute has lots of classic films, might be worth a look

Curzon Home Cinema

But I second Sony Movies Classic as well

maras2 · 05/04/2020 15:17

Agree that Talking Pictures ch81 Freeview is great.
However, daytime midweek films are quite early ie.1930's/40's but evenings and weekends are more 50's/60's.
Google 'Talking Pictures' and you'll see a month's TV listings.

Ninkanink · 05/04/2020 15:18

NowTV has a pretty good selection of classic films.

MorrisZapp · 05/04/2020 15:22

TCM has loads of westerns. I'm recording The Outlaw Josey Wales tonight, as I've never seen it before 🤠

daylilies · 05/04/2020 15:25

Also check the schedule throughout 24 hours, sometimes some good one on in the middle of the night and we record them.

I think that Kanopy is available through libraries in the UK. It's a streaming service that you access through your library. You download the app (onto your phone or smart tv) and then use your library card and online library password to access the app. They have the Criterion collection (all old black and white movies) and an amazing collection of independent and foreign films and documentaries. Here in the USA Kanopy is available through pretty much any library card. I googled it and it seems that it was introduced to the UK in spring 2019 and is now pretty available through most UK libraries. You are normally limited to a certain number of movie views per month but my library announced that they are temporarily lifting the limit for the duration of the Stay At Home orders. And all our libraries here have introduced a way to get a digital access card online during this period....hopefully they are doing the same in the UK.

BBC iplayer have some at the moment - Ice Cold in Alice and The Ladykillers are but two.

There's also Pluto TV - it's a mixed bag but they have some classics on there. And it's free.

middleager · 05/04/2020 15:31

Alex, not Alice!
Getting mixed up with A Town Like Alice which may also be on there.

OpposableThumbs2 · 05/04/2020 16:34

Definitely some on BFI Player

I am not sure if Movies for Men channel is still on Freeview. Lots of cowboy films and war films.

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 05/04/2020 17:22

Movies4Men has been sadly discontinued but SonyMoviesAction which replaced it on Freeview channel 40 has a smattering of their old (usually terrible) 1950s Westerns.
