Front Door Fresh Air Query

Kpo58 · 04/04/2020 14:39

Now the weather has gotten really nice, but we are all still under lockdown, I really need suggestions on how I can keep my front door open to let in the fresh air, but not allow my kids to escape. Does anyone have any good suggestions on how to do this without having to replace my entire front door?

Stair gate
Tape
Large piece of cardboard
Tell them NO

itsbetterthanabox · 04/04/2020 14:44

Open windows.

HotGlueGun · 04/04/2020 14:46

How old are your kids?

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 04/04/2020 14:49

Gotten?

screwcovid19 · 04/04/2020 14:57

Can you not just open your windows instead? I don't think I've ever seen someone leaving their front door open to let air in, back door possibly...

HoffiCoffi13 · 04/04/2020 14:59

If they’re old enough to be told no, tell them no. If they’re not, don’t leave the front door open and open your windows instead.

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2020 15:01

Why does it need to be the front door open?

selfisolatingsince2007 · 04/04/2020 15:03

NO - by going outside and smelling the air in your front garden you hate the NHS and want everyone in it to DIE. I have called the helpline and dobbed in my dog. Bloody nurse hating so and so.

Gotten?

Er, yes - it is a word.

My DC are 3 & 2 years old.

The reason that I cannot leave a window open at the front is that the window is really low and easy for them to climb out (and fall from the first floor).

I want the front door open as it's south facing and the door at the back (and the back garden) is nearly always in shade, which just makes the room really cold, even when its hot and sunny outside (as in wearing jumpers in the house and short sleeved t-shirts outside the front).

So you never have your windows open? All windows above ground level have to have safety catches to be compliant.

isabellerossignol · 04/04/2020 15:14

Is your living room on the first floor, but your front door is on the floor below? Like eg a house where the garage is underneath the living space but the front door is beside it?

Clymene · 04/04/2020 15:16

Presumably if they're 2 and 3, you're not leaving them on their own so you can just tell them not to go near the door

BeetrootRocks · 04/04/2020 15:16

Assume op is in USA (gotten) and I think sometimes from the telly house configurations can be different plus UK window regs not relevant

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 04/04/2020 15:17

Stair gate.

BeetrootRocks · 04/04/2020 15:17

I mean obv the houses aren't all the same here but YKWIM

Frankiecandle · 04/04/2020 15:17

Use a stair gate?

WhateverHappenedToBathPearls · 04/04/2020 15:19

Our front door has a chain so we leave it on that (with a shoe in the gap to stop it blowing shut) sometimes. If you open the back door as well it gives a lovely through draught.

Kpo58 · 04/04/2020 15:19

My main room is at the back of the house in constant shade. There is a tiny kitchen window at the front of the house and the front door. Upstairs I have only 1 large window at the front of the house, but is really low to the ground, so I don't open it at the moment, until the children are older. There is one window unstairs at the back that I do open as it's out of reach, so isn't a hazard.

I bet if you look up pet gates/guards there might be something. This is why stable doors are so good! I don’t know why everyone seems to think you’re mad for wanting your door open - we leave ours open sometimes too.

BlankTimes · 04/04/2020 16:04

Unfortunately in this day and age, an open door on a house is an open invitation to some people with less than good intentions. It also depends on the area where you live and where your front door is in relation to the street outside. If you have a front garden with a locked gate you'd feel safer from randoms walking in than if your front door opens directly onto the pavement.

However, from the point of view of having small children indoors that need to be kept inside, I'd be very concerned they would soon be able to climb over a safety gate, so would want a full front door security gate. google for different styles.

dementedpixie · 04/04/2020 16:37

I would never leave my front door open as it would be an open invitation to burglars. I would leave my back door open though.

BeetrootRocks · 04/04/2020 16:48

I've propped the front and back to get air through when it's v hot or someone has burnt food!

stickerqueen · 04/04/2020 16:58

stairgate?

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 04/04/2020 17:25

Are the US in lockdown to our extrent?

Genuine question aside from the cringe of gotten. Are they about where we are in all this? Or are they behind us like we are behind Italy?
I should google
