I cannot get rid of threadworms. Please help!

I’m so embarrassed writing this.

I’ve had them for about a year, I have no idea how I got them as my dc are in their twenties. I have tried everything!

We use separate bathrooms and we all have our own towels. We’ve all had the ovex treatment, two weeks apart. I personally have had it (ovex) more often. I’ve followed all the hygiene guidelines, ie washing hands thoroughly, sleeping in underwear, changing bed linens regularly, wiping down surfaces etc - everything (including eating raw carrot and garlic).

I’ve even been to the Gp (before this current crisis hit!) and had a sample tested. It came back negative but I don’t know how that could be as I’m absolutely positive I have them.

I don’t know what to do and, ridiculous as it sounds, it’s getting me down. Any suggestions? Anything at all?

If the sample was negative what makes you convinced you have them?

Susay · 04/04/2020 11:32

I have all the signs of them Blush

do you wear pants in bed?
wash your bottom before bed,
trim your nails.

EricaNernie · 04/04/2020 11:42

you cant normally see them in faecal matter

EricaNernie · 04/04/2020 11:43

in america they are called pin worms

you itch?
you need anti itch cream

Susay · 04/04/2020 11:47

Yes Erica I do wear pants in bed and am scrupulous with hygiene. I itch but I don’t scratch. Can’t understand why I can’t get shot of them! All my dc had them years ago when they were little and getting rid of them was so easy.

dont assume have threadworms

look for pruritis ani treatment.

Baaaahhhhh · 04/04/2020 11:56

Get a portable bidet and wash your bum every time you go to the loo. Might help.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 04/04/2020 11:58

What signs are you experiencing? Have you seen them?

Muminabun · 04/04/2020 12:05

Piles can cause itching and really similar symptoms op. Could you have them piles/hemmeroids?

Susay · 04/04/2020 12:13

Thanks for further replies and suggestions.

I think it must be worms because it’s not constant itching, just at night or occasionally through the day. I see what must be worms on the toilet paper when I wipe. I can’t believe I just wrote that!

What other symptoms of piles would there be? I would love it to be piles not worms - now there’s a sentence I never thought I’d type!

I’ll have a look at that cream.

Thank you so much.

Are they wiggling when you see them? I've sometime thought but of toilet paper are worms. They are quite obvious when you do see them. I suffered for years but it was very obvious what it was.

Susay · 04/04/2020 12:23

They’re not wiggling but I think that must be because I’ve squished them when I wipe. I’ve no idea why but that last sentence just made me lol!

How did you eventually get shot of them must?

I’ve ordered some of the cream.

I took ovex evening Sunday for a month to get rid of them, it worked (had tried a single dose a few times and they returned after 6-8 weeks)

DropYourSword · 04/04/2020 12:36

It sounds like it may not be threadworm! If you’re only seeing on toilet paper and they aren’t moving at all that can very easily be tiny bits of rolled up toilet paper

Nemesia · 04/04/2020 12:40

You could try giving up sugar and refined carbs. I think they need sugar to survive. Might be worth a try along with the ovex and hygiene measures.

SomethingOnce · 04/04/2020 12:46

To be blunt, I think your wiping technique is causing the paper to fragment and roll into thread shapes. If you’ve Ovexed that much it’s unlikely you’ve still got them.

Friendsofmine · 04/04/2020 12:49

Could it be another form of vaginal issue like thrush? I used to get itching just at night and it was this.

Susay · 04/04/2020 12:53

I’m so grateful that you’re all engaging with me and my worms - thank you!

I’d considered/hoped it might be toilet paper bits, but I’m fairly certain it’s not, having looked closely Blush on many occasions.

Friends don’t think it’s thrush as the itching is exclusive to the anal area. Lucky anal area!

double the dose of ovex

Mustbetimeforachange · 04/04/2020 13:03

I don't think you would squish them they are kind of translucent white, quite shiny and very wriggly.
Eventually they just went with treatment. Unless I still have them asymptomatically but I don't think so.

DumpedByText · 04/04/2020 13:17

Sounds like bits of loo roll sorry.

My DD (8 at the time) had tummy ache constantly. Got referred to a consultant and he wanted to rule out worms. He prescribed her Ovex once a day for 3 days, then repeat in two weeks same dose. So you can take more than one dose if you're convinced it's worms.

This is gross but when you feel the itch/wriggle do you have a look. Maybe get a mirror and see if you can see them.

If there isn't anything, it sounds like you've got an itchy bum so get done cream.

WreckTangle95 · 04/04/2020 13:20

Yes definitely have a look when you are itching. They come out at night to lay eggs!
