Flatmate has left leaving me up the creek

I wonder how long before I can get another one. My rent has doubled since I had a knock on the door last night. Flat mates mum turned up to empty her room. She was really lovely as well. Not even a text. Apparently she went to NI has caught a chest infection and been put on antibiotics and her mum has told her she needs to move back home! I want to say see how the land lies she might want to come back in afew weeks.

So Im all on my own some and my rent has shot up from £700 to £1250 plus bills. Im trying not to worry but I need to make a plan. Im lucky in that Im a nurse and of course there’s overtime but thats not without its risks.

Will people ever return to London? I cant ask for help and theres no point telling the landlord as they know Im a nurse and Ive been here 15 years.

Yes I’m
Going to look into it today once I’ve finished my window boxes! Thanks.

Subletting is not illegal when your landlord knows exactly what is happening. It’s normal here. Yes the rent will be half my salary but I will look for ways to pull in my belt. Thanks all.

Have you actually spoken to your lodger OP? Might be a good start rather than taking Mummys word for everything?

DangerMouse17 · 04/04/2020 11:47

Call me a cynic but I imagine the fact that you're a nurse has probably caused the flatmates mother to insist her daughter keep away. The reasonable thing for them to do is pay the rent a bit longer, at least another month to give you time to find an alternative. That's what you should ask for.

Should be fairly easy to get a new tenant in, even at this time. From what I’ve found (not in London though) there are still people looking.

werekitty · 04/04/2020 11:49

I'm a landlord and am passing on my three month mortgage holiday to my tenants as they have told me that they are in trouble. They are really good tenants been there for several years and I would prefer that they talk to me and we come to an arrangement. If you ask your landlord you might get a favourable response.

suggestionsplease1 · 04/04/2020 11:50

I would ask if your landlord can give you some leniency. My tenant is on furlough and I said to her to leave this month's rent altogether and that I would only expect 80% of rent for the time she is on furlough if her employment does not make up the difference.

Other landlords are doing similar, or trying to give breaks in the meantime that can be paid back in reasonable instalments in the future. By that stage you will be in a better position to find someone else to share with you again.

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 11:52

So odd
On other threads you say you an admin worker
On another 3 days ago you refer to your DH and dog

Now you’re a nurse living alone in a shared flat

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 11:53

And you talk at length about very serious corona symptoms you are experiencing a couple of weeks ago

MiniatureRed · 04/04/2020 11:56

Hi OP. Your situation is totally normal for London living and I'm not sure why so many other posters can't grasp that.

I think you're right about her not wanting to share with a nurse. I'd bet there's others in your position so I'd send a text to every single person in your phone book, asking for them to put word out that you need a new flatmate. Also if you've got a noticeboard at work stuck it on there.

DEFINITELY text the landlady and tell her whats happened. Explain now would be the perfect time if she could change the bed and spruce it up a little as you're going to massively struggle to get someone else in.

Good luck OP.

But what does your tenancy agreement say?

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 11:58

Totally ignore me!!!!

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 11:59

Mixing up multiple threads
Apologies

EachandEveryone · 04/04/2020 11:59

I won’t expect you to apologise. And I won’t even get into am argument I have bigger things to think about.

@Bringringbring12 what?!

dontcallmelen · 04/04/2020 12:11

@EachandEveryone I do you hope you are ok, I have known Each for ages from a S&B thread, she is not a troll.
Take care of yourself 💐

thecatneuterer · 04/04/2020 12:11

@Bringringbring12 WTF? I know Each personally and you are completely wrong!!

OP - sorry to hear that. There are still a few people looking for rooms, but I've lost three tenants as a result of this crisis and, for the first time ever, I've been unable to fill the rooms (well I could have done if i'd been prepared to take totally unsuitable people, but not otherwise). All LLs are expecting to be approached about rent problems so, if you have to ask for a temporary reduction/postponement then it is likely to be better received than it would have been in normal times.

BringMeTea · 04/04/2020 12:11

Some absolutely horrible posters on here. I would ask/tell landlady you won't be able to cover the difference for foreseeable. Someone with 80 properties can take the hit I reckon, certainly over the next few months. Good luck!

dontcallmelen · 04/04/2020 12:14

Also yy what Miniture said, it’s perfectly normal here in London especially with a long term renter.

HollowTalk · 04/04/2020 12:14

My son's in the same position, OP. There were four of them, paying about £2,400 between them in equal shares. Now one has gone back home and though she says she'll be back they know she won't. All three are self employed with no current work because of the virus, and will struggle to pay her rent, even with the 80%, which isn't arriving until June. It's an awful situation and must be happening all over the country.

twoheaped · 04/04/2020 12:15

@Bringringbring12 if you can't say anything nice, eh!?

My sil is a nurse, she owns 3 houses and only one has a mortgage on it, she is paid handsomely.

SharonasCorona · 04/04/2020 12:15

But what does your tenancy agreement say

So annoying when OPs don’t answer a repeated question yet keep posting.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 04/04/2020 12:17

On other threads you say you an admin worker
On another 3 days ago you refer to your DH and dog

WTF? Each is well known on the Litter Tray.
