Flatmate has left leaving me up the creek

I wonder how long before I can get another one. My rent has doubled since I had a knock on the door last night. Flat mates mum turned up to empty her room. She was really lovely as well. Not even a text. Apparently she went to NI has caught a chest infection and been put on antibiotics and her mum has told her she needs to move back home! I want to say see how the land lies she might want to come back in afew weeks.

So Im all on my own some and my rent has shot up from £700 to £1250 plus bills. Im trying not to worry but I need to make a plan. Im lucky in that Im a nurse and of course there’s overtime but thats not without its risks.

Will people ever return to London? I cant ask for help and theres no point telling the landlord as they know Im a nurse and Ive been here 15 years.

You’ve been there ages, what’s the landlord like?.

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/04/2020 11:18

It sounds as if there is a history of you finding difficulty to live with others. Wouldn’t you be better to serve notice as soon as possible and find a studio flat?

Was there no contract? If not, then you've been a fool and this is your pill to swallow and your lesson to learn. If so, was there no deposit/notice period?

You say you've always sublet and that's how everybody prefers it; not so. It seems, as it turns out, that you don't like it yourself.

tara66 · 04/04/2020 11:19

I was reading Times (or Telegraph?) that the Ritz Hotel was ''quietly'' offering rooms to NHS staff ( I think so they did not have to travel far).

EachandEveryone · 04/04/2020 11:20

Very stern I’m shit scared of her🙂

She’s fine though we keep
Out of each other’s way she has about 80 London properties it’s a big family concern.

She will probably text at some point. The rents not an issue but this might be a good time to get her to spruce the place up abit.

Of course you should have posted. You're concerned - have a lot on your plate at the moment, and it will help you to share. Plus some people might have some good ideas.

DD has moved home with us - her flat is now empty as her flatmate was due to leave at the end of March anyway. We are just taking the view that this is an unusual situation, and will work our way through it - helping out if we need to. Certainly talk to your landlord - people are being kinder and more understanding at the moment (on the whole!).

Take care of yourself.

London is transient some people I’ve lived with are here on six month internships etc. It makes life interesting. The only problems I had where the last two one was smoking weed and the other one lost her job and couldn’t pay. They both went quickly and quietly in the end. I just need to stop sharing on here.

And many many people have lost their jobs and moved back home. It is what it is at the moment. I’m here for the duration though 😃

A fellow NHS worker might be your best candidate right now, especially one that is trying to stay close to work and away from their family?

EachandEveryone · 04/04/2020 11:28

Yes I’ll look into it I don’t know if there’s special websites

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 11:30

I’m good for the rent
I am impressed that on a Nurse’s salary you are 100% financially ok to take on new rent of additional £550 plus extras a month

EachandEveryone · 04/04/2020 11:34

Isn’t that what my thread is about? Of course I’m good for it but still need to clamp down on other stuff. Everyone is feeling it.

Could you advertise on the intranet at work?

maggiecate · 04/04/2020 11:34

Rental market is being flooded with properties due to the Air BnB market collapsing so your landlady might be willing to knocking a bit off the rent, especially since you’ve been there so long. Can’t hurt to ask. And yes, as soon as this is over people will be back in London.

PieceOfMaria · 04/04/2020 11:34

Subletting. There you are then. There is a reason it’s illegal and now you are finding out why.

mencken · 04/04/2020 11:35

subletting isn't necessarily illegal, all depends on the contract.

OP - many councils are offering a council tax holiday and that's quite a big bill. Worth a look.

MadeForThis · 04/04/2020 11:36

Put a message up within the hospital. Someone will want a place to crash. You might not get the full rent but surely anything is good?

I would also text your landlord and make them aware of the situation. They may be able to offer you discounted rent.

PieceOfMaria · 04/04/2020 11:37

What does your contract say About subletting OP?

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 11:37

of course you are good for an overnight fit increase in rent of £550 a month on a single income of a nurse’s salary.

Impressive!

EricaNernie · 04/04/2020 11:40

are you near the new Nightingale Hospital?
that could be a positive

EricaNernie · 04/04/2020 11:41

Perhaps the landlord will help?
arent landlords meant to show some leniency currently?

ssd · 04/04/2020 11:43

Of course you should post here if you're worried.

I'd say another NHS worker is what you want right now.

Whenwillthisbeover · 04/04/2020 11:44

Why wouldn’t she be good for it, she could be a band 6 with London weighting and if she’s been in the flat for 15 years probably on max of the pay grade, with often unlimited overtime plus enhancements.

She will be able to manage in the short term, life just won’t be as comfortable and she may be relying on savings to cover any shortfall but I don’t think it’s unbelievable.

Singinginshower · 04/04/2020 11:45

Bringringring12 OP will be receiving London weighting to allow for higher living costs
