Frivolity.... Kitchen Aid or......

For reasons I shall not bore you with I would like to self-gift myself a frivolous gorgeous stand mixer. (Obviously when this is all over, not now and, to be honest, the colour I want wasn't in stock at JL ).

I love the look of the kitchen aid. But I have heard the motor can be a bit weedy.

I am a keen cook/baker. Use my food processor attachments on my current f-ugly stand mixer quite a lot.

Would I be better with something else. Or just go with the beauty of the Kitchen Aid?

Thank you oh-wise-MNetters.

I love my kitchen aid. I doubt I will need another stand mixer ever. It feels so built to last.

Boireannachlaidir · 04/04/2020 11:58

Kenwood K-Mix no contest.

katmarie · 05/04/2020 09:07

I've spent an hour this morning designing my fantasy kitchen based around a splash back of a retro moet and chandon poster. Thanks op, I'll hang on to that link :)

CandyStripeCushion · 05/04/2020 09:10

Kenwood Patissier is eminently strokable, beautiful, and a lot cheaper than a Kitchen Aid.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 05/04/2020 09:12

My mother got a Kenwood as a wedding present in 1971 & used it almost daily until she died. I hauled it out of the cupboard a few months ago where my father had left it, and it still works far better than my modern mixer. They built them to last back then.

FlamingoAndJohn · 05/04/2020 09:16

Many years ago I used to sell Kitchen Aids.

One thing to be aware of when comparing the motor power with other mixers is that because the kitchen aid has a direct drive motor all the power goes to the mixer. This is not the case with other mixers. So although other brands might have a higher wattage you are not getting all of those watts.

Apparently, Kenwood Chefs are the workhorses of stand mixers. I suspect when my mother's house finally needs clearing, I'll be able to take the one she bought in 1978 and it'll still work.

My mothers 1960s Kenwood is still going strong as is mine from the late 80s. Eldest DC bought one SH which is about ten years old and it is also a workhorse.

They don't come in the range of pretty colours but they do seem to be workhorses.

Haven't got one or the room for one but am lusting this one!

smeg appliances are really not worth their money (ime, maybe they all hate me)

style over substance.

CandyStripeCushion · 05/04/2020 10:04

What a style though! Dreamy!

bruffin · 05/04/2020 10:07

The kitchenaid comes low down on Which compared to Kenwood and Bosch. Agree with Smeg my oven is not great

ProperVexed · 05/04/2020 10:20

KitchenAid. Definitely. I love mine. I went for a granite grey colour but wish I had gone for something bright. I have a red kitchen aid coffee machine which is simply beautiful and is used many times a day. Meanwhile, back to the mixer, by far the best bit is its strokability ...just like a baby's bottom. (Oh God, do I sound like a pervert?)

wonderstuff · 05/04/2020 10:28

Bloody love my kitchenaid, it was a Christmas present to myself this year. It makes fantastic pizza dough and mashed potatoes. Looks beautiful in my kitchen.

MsRinky · 05/04/2020 10:29

I love my Kitchenaid (cafe latte, which is a sparkly cream). I have mincer and pasta making attachments, plus ice cream maker. I use it probably four days a week.

NoWordForFluffy · 05/04/2020 10:35

I ❤️❤️❤️ my candy apple red one (glass bowl). I bought it from the official refurbished store on eBay when it was 20% off so it was less than £200. It still had the 12 month guarantee, so I decided it was a safe bet.

We use it all of the time. And it looks very pretty. And strokeable. We got rid of our barely-used microwave so we had room.

SummerOfComedy · 05/04/2020 10:38

I do a lot of baking and bought a KitchenAid. Lasted about a year before the motor failed. Exchanged it for a Kenwood and this was slightly better, but neither of the mixers lived up to the 'workhorse' reputation I thought they both had.

Then I bought an Ankarsrum. OK, it's not as pretty looking as a KitchenAid or a Kenwood, but my goodness, it copes with anything I've thrown at it.

You can make massive batches of dough-I made a 5kg batch the other day. Got 8 loaves out of it.
It has a separate bowl for cake/cookie making.

It's design is totally different than a conventional stand mixer, comes in 8 different colours (blue included) and is a fair bit more than your usual mixer, £600 plus.

🙂

DP bought me a Kitchenaid Artisan for Christmas and I've used it loads since. It's encouraged me to bake more because it's so easy to just chuck things in and use (was doing everything by hand before so the motivation to bake wasn't always there)
I say go for it. I've read about not using higher than speed 2 when kneading dough as going faster can damage the motor so I think as long as you're aware of the correct speeds then you hopefully won't have an issue. As I've only had it since Christmas I can't comment on the motor's reliability yet.

DP bought mine from Very which had a really good deal on at the time.

wonderstuff · 05/04/2020 18:44

I got mine from QVC, worth looking at their website for deals, it was definitely cheaper than JL.

APurpleSquirrel · 05/04/2020 19:02

I've had my dark silvery grey KitchenAid for over 7 years & it's fab. Used it lots & especially these last few weeks. Go for it.

elp30 · 05/04/2020 20:16

Get one OP!!

I am a keen cook so with the money I got from selling my parent's house after my father died in 2011, I finally treated myself to a Kitchen-Aid mixer.

I chose a limited edition Artisan Design 5 qt glass bowl in a metallic pink color. It was one designed for a breast cancer charity. As my mother fought and lost her battle with breast cancer, I found it appropriate to purchase that specific model.

I've had it now for nine years and it's so beautiful to look at and I use it two to three times a week. But, I did have to have the motor recalibrated because making bread would cause it to wobble. It was last done about four years ago but it's starting to wobble again. Confused

I'll be moving back to England in the near future so I'm going to have to leave it behind and I'll probably pass it down to one of my kids. I'm definitely going to buy another one, especially as there are so many new colors now.
