Frivolity.... Kitchen Aid or......

ChoporNot · 03/04/2020 20:08

For reasons I shall not bore you with I would like to self-gift myself a frivolous gorgeous stand mixer. (Obviously when this is all over, not now and, to be honest, the colour I want wasn't in stock at JL ).

I love the look of the kitchen aid. But I have heard the motor can be a bit weedy.

I am a keen cook/baker. Use my food processor attachments on my current f-ugly stand mixer quite a lot.

Would I be better with something else. Or just go with the beauty of the Kitchen Aid?

Thank you oh-wise-MNetters.

I had a 1976 kenwood chef that my great aunt gifted me that I used for years but I replaced it with a Kmix a few years ago.
I love my red shiny Kmix and did gift my old kenwood to someone else.

Your counter space is crying out for a Kitchenaid, get one! I love my silvery grey one, daily joy just from seeing it never mind the pleasure of using it.

ChoporNot · 03/04/2020 21:15

Thing is, I have an old OS map as my splashback...I could pick out the red from that and the chicken on the mantle piece...

Better pic. Hmm rethinking red though. Think it would be too much.

A friend had a cherry red one, beautiful against her black granite work top :)

PlatinumBrunette · 03/04/2020 21:22

I treated myself to that exact colour Kitchenaid last year. My old (red) one died after 20 odd years.

The colour is a lot brighter than the website and positively glows! It is gorgeous though.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 03/04/2020 21:27

Your splash back is stunning.

Dd (16) saved up birthday & Christmas presents to get a Kitchenaid. She has pictures of it on her phone to share with anybody silly enough to ask her about it. And, yes, she does stroke it every time she walks past it.

Me, I can’t really see the difference from the £40 Aldi mixer I bought her a few years back. I’m obviously a philistine.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/04/2020 21:29

Love the splashback!

I do envy the beautiful colours of the KitchenAid... But my Kenwood chef has never failed to perform. Mine is an infant... A mere 5/6 years old- it replaced an 1980s one that was a wedding present when my parents got married. It blew up when I was teaching my DDs how to bake.

Fuss · 03/04/2020 22:05

Go for it.
My Kenwood K mix broke after 3 years of very occasional use. The lever that lifts the body dislodged inside. Annoyingly couldn't find any receipts for it so dh took it apart and managed to remove the lever so it now just lifts (no safety cut out on it now!)

I dream of the day I can chuck it for a kitchenaid. I think the old Kenwood were the work horses and the new ones just style over substance.

Boopeedoop · 03/04/2020 23:32

I have a Kenwood patissier, which is also very beautiful.

PickAChew · 03/04/2020 23:35

I got dh to replace the grease in my kitchen aid, a few weeks before lockdown. That's 10 years old and only cost me £150!

Janleverton · 03/04/2020 23:46

Mine is 17 years old and going strong. Cream. Love it!

AlexCabot · 04/04/2020 00:19

I have a pistachio green Kitchenaid and it's the love of my life*

*Apart from DH and the kids obviously. And the dog!

KatyN · 04/04/2020 08:42

I had this dilemma a few years ago.. it was just after trump came to power and I made the decision based on the fact that kitchen aid is distantly owned by trump
I love my kenwood.

lighthousemuseum · 04/04/2020 08:47

I have one in cream. Love it but lusting after the completely unnecessary but very beautiful hammered metal bowl from Lakeland!

Bonitalazenia · 04/04/2020 08:48

Kitchenaid all the way. You deserve it. Mine is gloss black and simply beautiful. I keep my keys and phone chargers in it. I may use it for its intended use one day. If it makes you feel better I treated myself to a frivolous Mulberry Lily Handbag this month. I deserve it. I work hard.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/04/2020 08:48

I'd say go for it - I don't have one but I did have a Kenwood K-Mix (Costo) which was fine until it developed a problem with the off/on. It was very sporadic (ie didn't work 99/100 times)

I now have a Kenwood Chef 1000w in white . It does the job but mainly just sits there looking "functional"
And I miss the silicone edge K-Beater (old one didn't fit , new ones are £)

I don't bake much , but it'll do dough for pizza, cake mix. Very noisy though.

Now aside from Colour , what size are you going for?
There's a 6.9l Artisan in John Lewis

peachypetite · 04/04/2020 08:48

Absolutely love mine

BiBiBirdie · 04/04/2020 08:51

I have this one from AEG
ao.com/product/km5560-aeg-ultramix-food-mixer-blue-64734-69.aspx?&WT.z_PT=SDA&WT.z_AT=Food%20Mixer&WT.z_BR=AEG&WT.z_FT=Free%20Standing&WT.z_PC=KM5560_BL&WT.srch=1&WT.z_MT=Affiliate&WT.z_RTM=PHG

It's brilliant. It weighs a tonne and comes with some really good extras like a spare mixing bowl and a cover that fits them so if you have made too much mixture you can put the lid on and shove it in the fridge for later. It's very easy to use. For a home one it's far more like the professional cooks ones. You can also buy extra bits like a meat grinder and pasta maker that clip to the front.

It's my fave toy

katmarie · 04/04/2020 08:57

We have a kenwood, it's amazing, does everything, and is a proper work horse. It replaced the one sil took with her when she moved out of our house (it was her and dh's mums, so not like she stole it off us or anything). The one she took was a good 30 years old and this one is just as good. Having said all that, we have a red and white kitchen and I continually lust after the candy apple red kitchenaid, I think they are just beautiful bits of machinery. So I say do it, I have no doubt it will make you smile every day.

Ps I also love your splash back, how did you do it?

This a good article to help choose

divafever99 · 04/04/2020 09:26

Had my kitchen aid 7 years now, still looks brand new. I leave it out on the kitchen top and it gets used a lot. I liked several of the colours but went with cream in the end, as I thought if we ever re-do the kitchen it would match any other colour scheme.

ChoporNot · 04/04/2020 09:56

@katmarie got the splashback about 5 years ago from these guys :www.diysplashbacks.co.uk/ - who basically take any photo you have and print it onto glass (size of your choice)

I had the map already (£15 1935 OS Map I found on ebay) and just scanned it, then played around with it on a photo editor so it was the right proportions/centred/zoomed into the right place. Then just sent to the DIYsplashback people - they confirmed it was good enough quality etc, scaled it up and voila.

It cost £275 - so not cheap but totally worth it. I think that included having the holes drilled and screws/fixings.

It has had lots of love over the years and it is still one of my favourite home-decor decisions.

You maybe able to find other glass splashback companies who print photos onto glass so you maybe able to find it cheaper.

I have a kitchenaid, and the motor copes just fine with kneading 2kg of bread dough on a regular basis (apart from now, because everyone else has bought all the bread flour 'just in case' so those of us who always bake our own can't...)

It's going to be out on display in my kitchen forever, so looks matter. But it has to perform well too, and it does.

Witchend · 04/04/2020 11:44

I love my kitchen aid. There's also a citrus fruit squeezer that makes squeezing lots of oranges much easier.
