Are they all just interviews? Or spoken word?

Never listened to one before (can you tell?) so just looking to try something new ...

Cheers

They vary. Some have music, some are radio shows, Most are spoken word. I listen to podcasts everyday and like general knowledge ones. Check out:
‘answer me this’ British, listeners ring in with various questions that the presenters answer.
‘Stuff you should know’ american, they take a theme a week and explore it.
‘Infinite monkey cage’ BBC with Brian Cox. Similar to stuff you should know but more science based.
Fearne Cottons ‘Happy Place’ is nice too
Also have a look at the charts on the podcast app if you have an iPhone.

Quorafun · 02/04/2020 21:24

I dislike them. Its listening to random people having a conversation. like overhearing a telephone call between two friends, who are also trying to plug in whatever the sponsor wants them to.
Listen to the radio, or an audio book, much better structured

‘You’re Dead to Me’ is really good. It’s a history podcast but is funny and genuinely interesting. It’s aimed at people who don’t like history, or didn’t learn any at school.

icebearforpresident · 02/04/2020 21:42

Find one that interests you and from there you’ll start to find more, that’s how my never ending list of podcasts to listen to started. So the first one I downloaded was The West Wing Weekly, about, funnily enough, The West Wing. At the end of one episode of that was a clip of Ear Hustle, recorded and produced inside San Quintin prison in California, which got me into 99% invisible which got me into...

Whatever app you use will have recommendations, charts etc so it’s really easy to find something to start with and it will go from there. There’s also the podcast topic in here.

My top recommendations, apart from the ones already mentioned, are:
*Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People
*Armchair Expert
*How to fuck up an airport
*The Worst Sitcom Ever Made
(The last 2 are short series of about 8 episodes, the first 2 run every week)

Mmsnet101 · 02/04/2020 21:48

Shag married annoyed is great for a giggle (and everyone needs that just now).

Standard issue was an alternative womens mag that has turned to podcast, with some really interesting interviews.

Happy mum happy baby is feel good, with lots of celeb mums talking about their experiences. This is very much q and a type podcast.

Love some true crime and history ones too which are more like audio books. Just depends on the mood and what I'm doing. Once you find one or two you like, it'll start recommending others for you.

TheEndIsBillNighy · 02/04/2020 21:48

Some are absolutely abysmal...I think you have to kiss a few frogs, so to speak.

I enjoy the Woman’s Hour podcast (although it’s not as good as it normally is since Covid-19, but that’s understandable).

Adam Buxton is quite funny.

Dead to Me (already mentioned)

SpaceCadet4000 · 02/04/2020 21:57

I'm a podcast addict! My favourite thing to do during summer evenings is to sit outside with a podcast playing in my ears doing stretches on my yoga mat.

See if any of these interest you:

The Dream- an investigation into multi-level marketing schemes with lots of interviews with people who have been sucked in
Caliphate- a NY Times podcast documentary about ISIS fighters
The Clearing- a woman whose dad was a convicted serial killer grapples with her past and tries to determine if he killed anyone else
Science vs- delves into interesting and eclectic science, with a lean towards debunking myths

SpaceCadet4000 · 02/04/2020 21:57

Looks like I failed on my formatting! I blame social distancing...

GuyFawkesDay · 02/04/2020 21:59

Shagged married annoyed
My dad wrote a porno
Radio4 Friday night comedy

All good for giggles

frogsbreath · 02/04/2020 22:03

I will pop in and recommend the only podcast I ever recommend, stuff you should know with Josh & Chuck.

Two guys research a topic and then basically chat about it. Honestly, it's brilliant and they have a massive back catalogue.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 02/04/2020 22:05

I enjoyed Cabin Pressure - very funny radio play

I also regularly listen to No Such Thing as a Fish and have just been introduced to Off Menu.

All very different. There is a huge variety... just dip your toe in and you’ll soon find something you like.

seekingwaxwings · 02/04/2020 22:10

I adore Stuff You Should Know, I feel like Josh and Chuck are my buddies in lock down.

Adam Buxton is wonderful, and I also love No Such Thing As A Fish. I like podcasts that are funny, informative, and that feature warm amiable hosts.

Sherlockia · 02/04/2020 22:16

It's kind of like radio, and people make all different types of show- so there are interviews, lone person talking on a subject, group of friends talking, comedy, magazine style, documentary style, investigative etc. Some are better than others obviously. Some I have listened to are Serial (like a crime doc), This american life and S-town (investigative journalism) and Thinking sideways (it's finished now but is friends chatting about unsolved mysteries).

LennyPugGoat · 02/04/2020 22:24

I made some notes today from this morning, not my thing but l love the idea of yoga and a podcast

Fun kids science weekly (for the Dc but I might learn something...) But why as well

My favourite murder, funny - apparently
Table manners
Dear Joan and Jen - missed the whole name, apparently rude so funny

Love in the time of covid living with 3 Dc

And for the sports people - that Peter crouch podcast

PineappleDanish · 02/04/2020 22:26

I find saying "I don't like podcasts" very odd. I mean, I dint like all of them but then again I don't like all tv and I don't like all radio.

Some are two people having a chat, others much more structured. Some are factual, there's drama, fiction, politics, sport - everything. Look at the ones most people are listening to and download a couple.

SimonJT · 02/04/2020 22:28

TalkArt by Russell Tovey and Robert Diament is very good, they also sometimes do an instagram live.

Destinysdaughter · 02/04/2020 22:31

'You must remember this podcast'is excellent, about old Hollywood, the 12 parter about Charles Manson is particularly good.

If you remember Top of the Pops,
' Chart Music' is hilarious, it basically takes an episode of the program and dissects the fuck out of it! Is v sweary but brilliant.

DonnaDarko · 02/04/2020 22:32

Stuff You Should Know is really good.
I also recommend Reasons to Be Cheerful by Ed Miliband & Geoff Lloyd
My Dad Wrote A Porno

icebearforpresident · 02/04/2020 22:36

I forgot about The Dream & Caliphate - I’ll second those

Northernsoullover · 02/04/2020 22:39

I liked Hunting Warhead. Distressing content (Child abuse) but amazing how they tracked and caught the ringleader.
This Podcast will kill you.. I started listening to this because I study epidemiology and thought it might help me but it was so interesting I'm hooked. Its about infectious diseases and while it sounds like it might be boring the two Drs that present it are really entertaining. There is currently a 6 part podcast about Coronavirus.
Someone knows something - true crime podcast that looks at cold cases.
The Dream. Mumsnetters should LOVE this. Season 1 is about MLM schemes. Its fascinating

GuyFawkesDay · 02/04/2020 22:40

@LennyPugGoat it's Dear Joan and Jericha. Absolutely filthy but hilarious.

I also quite like Evil Genius. And Adam Buxton.

OhioOhioOhio · 02/04/2020 22:42

I agree with quorafun

notacooldad · 02/04/2020 22:48

Blimey what podcasts have you been listening to? That's not my experience!
The podcasts I tend to listen to are by a singular presenter telling a particular story. Some do have adverts if you are listening to them free but you can be a patreon which is then add free.

I like True Crime ones.
If you are interested the ones I like are 'They walk amongst us', a UK based one. Case File, mostly Australian but does cover other countries. The narrator is a bit monatone but tells the story as fact with no added drama. Serial Killers is intersting with two presenters. I love Mens Rea which is an Irish Crime podcast.
There are so many interersting subjects. I flit over to politics in different countries to home politics. I have a listen to culture and art ones as well. There is some good ones around music and films. It is just a case of dinding out what you like.

notacooldad · 02/04/2020 22:51

I meant to add to my list, an interesting one is ' Distraction Pieces' with Scrobius Pip. He interviews someone different every week and the subjects that he covers vast and varied.
