Are they all just interviews? Or spoken word?

Never listened to one before (can you tell?) so just looking to try something new ...

Cheers

Many podcasts are 'the radio' but you just listen to the programme at a time to suit you.

I like radio 4 comedies like The Unbelievable Truth or Friday Night Comedy, also the Food Programme, Infinite Monkey Cage, More or Less, true crime, all sorts really.

The BBC Sounds app is dreadful especially for listening to series but you can listen online or with many other apps. I tried a few and settled on antennapod.

I'm really missing my podcasts because I listened to them when I'm in the car on my own, so going to the office and also visiting clients and I'm doing neither at the moment, so they're all just building up. I don't usually listen to them in the house because I find that I lose concentration or other noises get in the way. Am planning to do some deep cleaning over easter so might put some on then.

mustyDuck · 03/04/2020 06:35

This American Life
Serial
Fortunately
Missing Kryptoqueen

I rate podcasts for travelling, or long walks at the moment.

If you like true crime. Red handed is excellent.

OldSpeclkledHen · 03/04/2020 07:54

Wowsers! Thanks very much everyone! Lots of good pointers there... guess like you say dip a toe and explore!

Am just downloading My Dad Wrote a Porno though - so looking forward to a giggle!

Thanks again!

I have just finished listening to The nobody zone which was very intersting. It is over 6 episodes.
Someone mentioned Teachers Pet. I was hooked on that one - you won't get it the podcast if you live in Australia though. An absolutely outrageous story.
The Wonderland murders is also a good podcast.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/04/2020 13:27

Be careful with my dad wrote a porno - I once laughed so hard I needed my inhaler.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/04/2020 13:31

And ps theres a podcadt section on mn under film and tv.

Joan and jerricha is also v v funny. If you like mdwap youll probably like that too.

PineappleDanish · 03/04/2020 13:35

Also love Stuff You Should Know.

Josh and Chuck are awesome. Topics go from safe cracking to politics and everything in between.

sleepwhenidie · 03/04/2020 13:43

I love unbelievable true stories as well - I'd recommend 'Shreds' which is the story of the 'Cardiff 5' - absolutely shocking. Great listening to the strong Cardiff accents (I'm Welsh) in the interviews.

Tunnel29 is amazing, the story of a group of Germans who dug an escape tunnel between East and West Berlin after the wall came down.

Fake Heiress is entertaining and an incredible story

I also like the therapy podcasts - Esther Perel 'Where do We Begin' - sex and relationship counselling is good, she is wonderful to listen to with her husky French voice talking about sex and love! Claudia Winkleman has also started one with Tanya Byron called 'How did we get here' which is more individual/family type therapy. Tanya does the session and Claudia listens in and asks questions in intervals.

sleepwhenidie · 03/04/2020 13:45

sorry - should after said 'after the wall went UP'!

DGRossetti · 03/04/2020 13:48

Richard Herrings Leicester Square Theatre podcast is good too - interviews with (generally) comedians. That's where Stephen Fry admitted his suicide attempt.

MistsofAvalon · 03/04/2020 13:55

Highly recommend Esther Perel's Where Do We Begin? and Crypto Currency Queen. Both excellent. I found Crypto Queen very gripping.

So many to choose from, there will be something you like. As with everything, quality does vary though!

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 03/04/2020 13:57

I like Elizabeth Day’s “How to Fail”

ooooohbetty · 03/04/2020 14:06

I hated my dad wrote a porno. Didn't find it funny at all. Also tried shagged married avoid and in the first one and last one I listened to they kept calling their little boy a prick which I didn't like. My favourite is Home Front, an epic serial about the First World War. I also like the Frank Skinner Show, Dirty John, TRIGGERnometry and Casefile.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/04/2020 14:17

I also didn't like My Dad Wrote a Porno, it wasn't that I was offended, I just didn't get what the joke was supposed to be, it was just weird. But I'm not short of stuff to listen to, so not fretting over it.

Some of the other things I like:

How to invent a country

The Boring Talks - some are indeed boring, but many are strangely fascinating. I especially like the one about pallets. Seriously, those wooden things used to hold piles of stuff while it is transported around, have quite a back story. Who knew there was such a thing as the European Pallet Pool?

Mortem, about solving murders using the evidence revealed during the post mortem.

There's been some good ones under the title Intrigue, from the BBC.

Giles Coren has no idea, the Scummy Mummies, Fortunately with Fi and Jane, and Jenny Eclair's Older and Wider I also like, but these are all of the 'two mates chatting' variety, which I didn't realise so many people didn't like.

Kuponut · 03/04/2020 14:27

I tend to fall asleep to them most nights (sleep earphones are awesome - tragic fashion crime of a soft hairband with earphones embedded in) to stop me tossing and turning and catstrophising everything in the world.

Ones I like (tend toward science/factual type stuff):
The Allusionist - word-origin type based
Twenty-thousand hertz - sound/audio/sound engineering stuff
Lingthusiasm - linguistics/phonetics

Infinite Monkey Cage - can depend a bit who’s on whether this one grabs me or not
Behind the Bastards - takes one shitbag a week and goes through their life of shitbaggery (unless you’re L. Ron Hubbard in which case you get about 5 episodes and counting)
This Podcast Will Kill You - explains the fuck out of a disease a week - very easy to understand but you learn a lot and the history and social impact of the disease as well - has one hell of an in-depth 6 parter on Covid19 at the moment as well
Ologies - again, can vary according to which guest is on - but has covered everything from sleep to animal anatomy and all sorts in between. I have to be in the right mood for this one
I also dip into the Guardian Long Reads depending on what the subject is on (it’s just an audio recording of one of their in-depth features they run), Darknet Diaries I enjoy as a tech/crime type crossover but he seems to have let his ego take over a bit on recent ones.
Stuff You Missed in History Class - history obviously and some of the ones that pop up on Ted Talks Daily

Tend to listen to them on a night when I can’t sleep and walking to and from uni so I get through a fair few a week.
The kids also like Cbeebies Radio from time to time when ones they enjoy (like Swashbuckle) come back on rotation.

ooooohbetty · 03/04/2020 19:34

@Kuponut I listen to them to fall asleep to as well. Sometimes I takes me about 10 attempts to listen to a full episode before I can go on to the next one

Vaginandtonic · 03/04/2020 19:37

My. Dad. Wrote. A. Porno.

Nothing else has ever come close for me.

TSSDNCOP · 03/04/2020 19:39

The Mayo and Kermode film reviews are ace.

prampushingdownthehighst · 03/04/2020 19:46

I didn't find my dad wrote etc funny at all
But Red Handed is fantastic if you are interested in true crime, Hannah and Suruthi are fab and very sweary!!

OldSpeclkledHen · 07/04/2020 22:31

OMG - Buck Off Banter (for those of us that are horsey!)

OP posts:
Wonderbag · 07/04/2020 22:42

Cracked
Freakanomics
The Habitat
The guilty feminist

I like ones related to tv I’m watching too, so Eyes on Gilead and Black Mirror Cracked were good listening at the time.

PipGirl404 · 07/04/2020 22:43

This Podcast Will Kill You is absolutely incredible.

Learning about the history and biology of diseases is amazing.

MsFrosty · 08/04/2020 00:01

This podcast will kill you- my husband hates it but hes a hypochondriac. Have learnt loads on disease and cocktails
Shagged, married, annoyed- Hilarious, for me its relatable and jess the paramedic needs to be a weekly feature (glowtick grandpa)
Bellingcat- downing on Malaysian airlines. Horrifying but sensitive investigation into what happened. Also amazing how much social media plays into the investigation
Tunnel 29- several different seasons to this now all excellent
Black tapes- horror story. I enjoyed it but not everyones cup of tea
Stuff they missed in history class- american based but covers a LOT of world history. I've learnt quite a bit was missed in history class
Passenger list-drama on a downed flight
Fake heiress- just floored how this happened
