Are you clapping tonight?

Just that?

I really don't think it can be a form of showboating as this forum is anonymous.

I'm also not judging those that do it, simply trying to understand why. My next door neighbours are both doctors, we swapped numbers when this started happening, I don't need to clap at them from less than 6 feet away. It rather defeats the point.

No ... Dd1 is a nurse and really does not see the point.
She would rather have proper equipment and appreciation all the time than some social media virtue clapping.

Tonyaster · 02/04/2020 14:07

I'm grateful. I also live in the middle of nowhere so it would be a bit weird to clap. Probably frighten the badgers.

Changingmyname1234 · 02/04/2020 14:08

Yes because it takes 5 mins, is no hassle and boosts moral. Was a bit meh about it last time but then I saw that it did mean a lot to people who are having a tough time in hospitals and as community hcps just now. It's the very least we can do. Supermarket workers, social care staff should probably be included and I say that as an NHS worker. (not frontline at the moment).

Tonyaster · 02/04/2020 14:10

It's the very least we can do

See, I do have an issue with this attitude.

If you want to clap, great, you get on with it. Probably "the least we can do" is stay at home and limit the amount of journeys to the shops.

Grandmi · 02/04/2020 14:13

Yes ...admittedly it doesn’t change the situation or magic up the PPE equipment (which my workplace is very lacking in )but it’s a supportive gesture towards everyone trying to do their best in a global shitshow!!

UncleHerbie · 02/04/2020 14:16

No. If you want to, do it, but it's not for us. My friend is NHS support staff / I support her in other ways and have done for years.

FuckPolitenessSSDGM · 02/04/2020 14:17

I'm not sure it should be a weekly thing either. People will start to feel forced to do it and then it will dwindle out. I hope it's not quite as effusive as last week when our neighbours decided to set fireworks off which scared the shit out of the dog, woke both kids up and made DH spill half a glass of wine down himself🙄

BearSoFair · 02/04/2020 15:13

No. We did last week but I don't think it needs to be a weekly thing and loses some of the meaning/impact if it's all the time.

rosiethehen · 02/04/2020 15:19

No, I'm at work on nightshift tonight. I find 'enforced' communal things a bit sinister and unnerving. Shaming on FB is the next logical step for those who don't participate.

sleepingpup · 02/04/2020 15:32

yes. very happy to.

i find it a small morale boosting thing that I can do. we felt good afterwards and I know the NHS people in our street were moved by it.

it's going to get worse before it gets better.

And am I 'happy clappy' OP ? pretty snarky. If you don't want to do it just don't . no one is making you.

firstimemamma · 02/04/2020 15:33

No.

RishiSunakFanClub · 02/04/2020 15:43

No.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 02/04/2020 15:59

No. If we start doing it every week it takes the 'specialness' away from it imo.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/04/2020 16:05

It's the very least we can do

It is that.

I'm in an essential service (not health) and I got weirdly thanked this morning. Very uncomfortable.

I'd suggest not repeatedly voting to take funds and resources away rather than clapping, but what do I know?

Innitogether · 02/04/2020 16:18

@Strugglingtodomybest, totally off the thread topic, your online book club sounds interesting. How did you find out about it?

HappyDinosaur · 02/04/2020 16:21

No, but only because I don't want to wake my toddler once she's asleep. If it was earlier it would be better, I think lots of children would enjoy doing it.

User202004 · 02/04/2020 16:23

No. How many people clapping voted Tory I wonder? People catch on to the strangest things and let the important things go.

teenagetantrums · 02/04/2020 16:25

Yes l will. Thought it was a bit cringy last week. But nice to see all neighbors doing it. I am not NHS but work in a care home. DP in a supermarket. So I'm clapping for all key workers.

SuperMeerkat · 02/04/2020 16:27

Yes!!

Changingmyname1234 · 02/04/2020 16:32

Well I thought that really went without saying since it's so blindingly obvious to most people with a modicum of common sense.

You might feel differently about the clapping if you lived in a street full of NHS workers and not badgers. Wink

expatinspain · 02/04/2020 16:33

I don't get why people are overthinking this so much. If you want to clap, then do, if not, don't 🤷🏻‍♀️. In Spain the clapping happens every evening and most people do it, but some don't. I haven't seen anyone online here overthinking it like on MN 😂 My friends and family in the UK are all supportive of it. I haven't heard anyone saying it's tacky/naff etc. Most people said they found it quite emotional. I think MN is a parallel universe sometimes!

midsomermurderess · 02/04/2020 16:41

Most Spaniards clap their health service? That's quite a claim for an expat to be making.

Whoareyoudududu · 02/04/2020 16:59

No, it’s totally pointless. Most people do it purely to film for social media to make themselves look like really great people. NHS staff need PPE, not middle class wankers clapping on their doorstep.

TooOldForSims · 02/04/2020 17:10

No.

Not sure I understand the point tbh and I say that as an NHS worker 🤷.
