How many non-CV lives will be saved due to lockdown?

Just pondering whether we will see a spike in deaths due to the effects of lockdown in other aspects:
Less people will get seasonal flu and other infectious illnesses
Less car accidents
Less drinking/drug related violence
Less sports accidents
Possibly less stress without the commute etc?
What do you think?

More domestic violence.
More sexual abuse
More neglect
More starvation
More fuel poverty
More loneliness
More suicide
More financial crisis

BonnesVacances · 01/04/2020 10:29

DD and I were musing yesterday that it might help the hedgehog population as fewer will be getting squished by cars.

Bobbybobbins · 01/04/2020 10:30

I think you are both right

As PP said, there will be both positives and negatives. Yes, the number of car and sporting accidents will surely go down. There have already been deaths relating to domestic abuse.

AnotherEmma · 01/04/2020 10:31

What Georgie said.
Plus - an important one - people with serious illnesses that do not get the care they need because of the increased pressure on the NHS.

TestBank · 01/04/2020 10:35

To add to the list, most accidents occur in the home therefore ...
More DIY related deaths (chainsaws, electrocution, fire)

Alcohol related deaths increase not decrease (functioning alcoholics tipped over the edge)

Family murder-suicides. Been one already and that's just week 1

Neglect and starvation (see carehomes in Spain)

Coldemort · 01/04/2020 10:35

Less roadkill - that's a nice thought.

People not wanting to bother their GP with symptoms that turn out to be something serious?

TestBank · 01/04/2020 10:43

Untreated or undiagnosed cancer

midgebabe · 01/04/2020 11:08

Lockdown will reduce the additional deaths from things like cancer and heart disease that would have increased if the virus had ripped through the population unchecked leading to nhs overload

TestBank · 01/04/2020 11:20

Cancer treatment has basically stopped. To be fair, that's due more to the virus than lockdown in particular, but new cancers won't be being diagnosed

Strangerthanstrange · 01/04/2020 11:25

I think more lives will be lost due to the lockdown than will be saved. (excluding directly CV related deaths)

BillyGoatWoof · 01/04/2020 11:35

People on the organ register who would have usually been recipients of people dying in car crashes etc will be affected. Obviously heartbreaking as no one wants someone else to die.

DGRossetti · 01/04/2020 11:48

I think the deaths due to pollution in China have plummeted. Tens of thousands of lives saved.

Coldemort · 01/04/2020 11:50

Some good points. Didn't consider organ register. And I think theyve seen the same regarding pollution in northern italy.

GreyishDays · 01/04/2020 11:51

Less stress? Yeah. Trying to work full time with three mildly traumatised youngish children is so much less stressful than normal life.

Coldemort · 01/04/2020 13:38

@GreyishDays the question was aimed at your immediate situation.

Maybe try again with 'people may not be as stressed with a long commute, however some are instead juggling working from home with children which can also be stressful'

My 97 year-old Grandad with progressive alzheimers is now 100% reliant on care from his 89 year-old wife. I am very concerned for his (and her) safety and wellbeing during lockdown.

BlueGheko · 01/04/2020 13:56

Over 60,000 UK deaths are attributed to air pollution every year in the UK, that's over 200 a day so I guess like in China many of those peoples lives will be saved due to lockdown. Ironic how no-one would consider dropping jetting off on their holidays or getting rid of their cars to save those lives.

From the Climate Change threads last year, no one did consider etc etc ..

billysboy · 01/04/2020 14:06

Be very interesting to have some figures from a AnE

Coldemort · 01/04/2020 14:09

It's interesting re Asthma and respiratory suffers who are most at risk from CV will also benefit the most from a reduction in air pollution

SnugglySnerd · 01/04/2020 14:13

I am hoping people continue the handwashing long after this year. Think how many other illnesses would be reduced e.g. norovirus if everyone washed their hands properly at all times.

I think some people are doing more exercise too as they want to take advantage of getting out of the house for an hour each day. Another good habit for people to get into.

Well ... you'd think. Turns out as one door closes, another opens ...

...

Ozone, another respiratory irritant, has climbed in many places - the highest levels seen in five years for this time of year.

Ozone formation at ground level is dependent on some very complex chemical reactions which, in the absence of certain exhaust gases, will give a boost to the three-atom oxygen molecule in the air.
