I’ve never read an Agatha Christie book - which one shall I start with?

Considering I have time to kill now that I’ve lost all my clients... tell me which one I should download first! Smile

And Then There Were None is my personal favourite, or start at the beginning of the Poirot series with The Mysterious Affair At Styles.

I’ve not read as many as I’d like, but listening to the audiobooks and radio plays while I do other things has reawakened my interest. The differences between various versions can be quite surprising though.

Enjoy!

There are many good Christie novels

Mysterious affair at styles is the first and one if the best
Start there

FFSFFSFFS · 31/03/2020 22:50

Literally the only panic buying I did was Agatha Christie books!

I read Murder on Orient Express years ago but none of the others and then recently decided it was time to read some more - and all of a sudden there was an opportunity to do so - and I am DEVOURING them!

I think any. But be warned that once you start its hard to stop...

Lonelykettleshed · 31/03/2020 22:54

And then there were none still scares the living daylights out of me.

If you've watched Marple and enjoy her then either A Murder is Announced or Murder at the Vicarage.

If you like Poirot, 5 Little Pigs or The Murder of Roger Ackroyd are classics

If you like Christie, you could also try the podcast All About Agatha where they go through all of the novels and rank them and go through the short stories too.

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 31/03/2020 22:58

My favourite & sometimes overlooked is Cat Among The Pigeons. Or Sleeping Murder. Or Murder on the orient express. Or the murder of Roger Ackroyd. I love them all but some more than others.

WomanInTheWindow · 31/03/2020 23:00

If you like audiobooks on Audible David Suchet reads Murder on the Orient Express - masterful!

And Then There Were None is the world's bestselling crime novel - it's brilliant, but maybe get into some others first

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/03/2020 23:04

My favourites are
The Mirror Crack’d
and
Sleeping Murder

Both also brilliant in the Joan Hickson TV versions, not the later rubbish ITV ones. Sleeping Murder is wonderfully creepy!

Doryhunky · 31/03/2020 23:05

And then there were none and the murder of roger ackroyd are amazing. Cat among the pigeons too. But they are all good in different ways!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 31/03/2020 23:12

Some of my favourites are actually the Poirot short stories, but you're probably best reading a few full length ones first.

CloseTheDoorPlease · 01/04/2020 00:38

The same first one that I read and my absolute favourite - And Then There Were None.
I’d love to be reading an Agatha Christie for the first time again.
Then try:
Evil Under The Sun
Three Act Tragedy
Murder in Mesopotamia
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (apparently classed as her masterpiece)
The Hollow
The ABC Murders
I have always loved AC books and could go on and on.

Bertram's Hotel?

mumwon · 01/04/2020 00:44

Oh &, A murder has been announced

AllTheseThingsThatIHaveNotDone · 01/04/2020 00:52

I liked Endless Night and And then there were none
Sparkling Cyanide and The mirror crack'd

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 01/04/2020 08:13

Cat Amongst the Pigeons is my all time favourite.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 01/04/2020 08:48

Black Coffee is good and also Dumb Witness. I like all of her books except for Curtain. It's well written but I don't like what happens.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 01/04/2020 09:20

A murder is announced

Ive got all the Agatha Christie books and ive decided To reread them all during (and after...im fast, im not that fast) lockdown

My plan is to read one every other book

I introduced not yet son in law to A murder is announced a few weeks ago, all you heard for two days was him going ‘ oh my god, that’s obviously a clue!!!! Oh thats got to be a clue!!!’ And then reading the ‘clue’ out to me Grin

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 01/04/2020 09:21

Oh and when im rich im going to rebuy them all in the same size and covers

Aberforthsgoat · 01/04/2020 09:22

Crooked House, Cat Among the Pigeons or A Mirror Crack’d. The Pale Horse is good too and made more creepy by the fact that it inspired a real life murderer.......

Caucasianchalkcircles · 01/04/2020 09:50

Agree that the bbc agatha christie dramas are really good and great for listening to when walking the dog or just going for a walk.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/04/2020 09:52

When I was about 13 I found three Agatha Christie books in the bookcase. I read them all with great enjoyment and eventually read all the others many times. Those first three were Dead Man's Folly, Hickory, Dickory Dock and Cat Among The Pigeons. I don't greatly recommend the first two but CATP is a huge favourite.

Caucasianchalkcircles · 01/04/2020 09:53

And the pale horse is currently on bbc sounds so you can download and listen, as was mrs mcginty is dead a few weeks ago

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 01/04/2020 09:59

Oooh mrs mcginty is dead is one of my favourites

efeslight · 01/04/2020 10:02

Also re reading my Christie collection, starting with The Pale Horse, after watching the recent TV show and feeling cheated!
Younger me preferred Poirot, but i am now appreciating miss Marple more.
Never really liked the Tommy and Tuppence books, but maybe try a few and see which 'flavour' you like best.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 01/04/2020 10:03

Gosh - you're so lucky!

Ideally one would read them in the order in which they were written - but there's no point waiting for an ideal life.

I love At Bertram's Hotel and Peril at End House. Crooked House is amazing and scared me half to death!
