Will you get a full refund or will you lose out in anyway (financially)?

I ask as we had an end of May holiday booked. I haven’t looked into it with the holiday company as I’m sure they will be inundated.

And I was die to go to a wedding in early May. I’m so sad for the couple that it’s been cancelled, and I was curious to know if they will be refunded? But don’t want to ask her.

No refund for our wedding, but suppliers and venues will carry over our deposits. Don't know about our mini moon at the end of May yet but think we'll lose on that one.

TheOtherSideOfTheMountain · 30/03/2020 12:52

Not sure yet - our holiday is booked for late July. Substantial cost (circa 9k) and only deposit paid. Can't even reach BA to speak to anybody, I think they are only dealing with the people travelling sooner. Very worried....I'm assuming we would 'only' lose the deposit and that they can't take more. Although the deposit itself was pretty hefty!! Was meant to be a holiday of a lifetime for special occasion.

No idea 🤷🏽‍♂️

I have Sitges booked for July and Ottawa inn August for the Bingham Cup which has been postponed until 2022.

I’m just waiting until nearer the time, until advice comes out that effects that specific trip there’s nothing anyone can do.

My Ottawa flights are booked via the airlines Bingham Cup offer, so I guess that could be credited or something

nowaitaminute · 30/03/2020 12:53

A friend of mine just rebooked her wedding for a much later date, everyone involved in the wedding so photographers, flowers, band etc. was very obliging and understanding so she didn't lose out in an way really.

fairgame84 · 30/03/2020 13:03

I was due to get married abroad at the start of June.
I've rebooked it all for early September. I've not lost any money. Hotel, flights were all booked separately and it's been no problem to move it all.

MadMadMad · 30/03/2020 13:04

We have a holiday booked which now won't go ahead and we will lose some money - insurance will pay but charge an excess pp per element so that quickly adds up.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 30/03/2020 13:05

BA holiday booked for early June, don’t want to travel even if we are able to at that time. Only paid a deposit of £300 to date, decided to write that off and see what happens- gutted but can’t afford to lose a couple of grand chasing BA for refunds closer to the date

Sihaya · 30/03/2020 13:07

Full refunds from the two island resorts we booked for Easter break, as well as our international and inter-island flights (minus equivalent of GBP 11.00 booking fee from one). Still need to wait one or two cycles for the refunds to go back to the credit card.

Harriett123 · 30/03/2020 13:08

My sisters wedding was ment to happen in August.
I think they have lost the deposits they had already paid. They live in New Zealand ( wedding ment to be in ireland) and both work in hospitality so have lost there jobs. Without jobs they cant afford to rebook so they have just lost all there deposits.

yearinyearout · 30/03/2020 13:13

We got refunds for a foreign holiday and have rebooked uk one for next year, not lost any money. Just the will to live.

ItchyScratch · 30/03/2020 15:26

Aw I’m so sad for those that have lost out. It’s such a shame.
And for those who have managed to easily rebook etc that’s such a relief for you.

Turning 50 in May so booked a very expensive (to us) UK holiday. Lost the lot as small print says no refunds. The company will make more money by us not going (no utilities/hot tub/cleaning costs) so they are quids in & I have no money left for celebrations.

30ishiwish · 30/03/2020 15:33

We have a holiday booked with Tui for August. We’ve paid a deposit and another £600 is due in April, followed by the rest of the balance in May.

We really don’t want to pay the next instalment. I’d like to rebook for August 2021 but can’t get through to Tui.

My question is, will we only lose the deposit if we don’t pay the next instalment?

APurpleSquirrel · 30/03/2020 15:35

We've moved our UK holiday to the same time in 2021. Admin fee was waived but did have to pay £25 extra to cover annual increase.

FrangipaniBlue · 30/03/2020 15:38

Our friends were supposed to get married this Saturday and everyone has let them reschedule to a new date later in the year at no additional cost.

In regards holidays, ours isn't until October but Virgin have told me that if the time comes and it's not possible to go, we will be able to move it to next year but would have to pay any price difference.

ToTheLetter · 30/03/2020 15:38

We were meant to be on holiday today. Company won't refund, we have to pay more to rebook which is about £100 more if the date is available.

Freeshavocado · 30/03/2020 15:49

We're booked to go on a very expensive holiday with TUI on 1st May (after we lost it for the first time when Thomas cook went bust).
So far TUI are offering us the option to rebook but a) going towards the end of this year is much more expensive and we already had to pay extra when we booked with TUI and b) my work have now said anyone who has annual leave booked in April-July isn't allowed to cancel it even if your holiday is cancelled, so I now have to take my 10 days off in May regardless which doesn't leave me with another 10 days to re book it another time (I only get 20 days in total and obviously need other days here and there).
So I'm praying TUI are going to give us the option of a full refund nearer the time when it becomes definite we can't go. If they don't we will have to cancel regardless and lose ££ unless I can persuade my company to cancel my annual leave.

We were due to travel mid March to an island (3rd world country) with no health facilities. The FCO advice on the day of travel was to go.There were no cases of CV recorded on the island at that point. But one of our party had medical reasons why Coronavirus would be more serious. The usual emergency medical care arrangement was to fly people off the island to one of 2 other countries. Both of those countries had shut their borders already. We knew it was only a matter of time before travel to this destination was stopped and sure enough 48 hours after we were due to travel all travel to this country and from the UK was halted. But our decision not to go was classed as 'disinclination to travel' so not covered by the travel company or the insurance.

We do know though that there were 2 cases confirmed at our hotel during that week, some of the restaurants were shut down and there was a panic bout when/how people were going to get off the island. It would not have been the holiday we were expecting and to be honest I was quite glad to be sitting on my sofa at home watching it unfold.

TreacherousPissFlap · 30/03/2020 16:46

We've been advised we're able to rebook but the only dates suitable for next year are in school holidays - this pushes the cost from £4K to £7.5k Shock
DH has just been furloughed so it seems like a step too far to commit to, not to mention that I simply cannot bring myself to consider paying that sort of money for 1 week away.
We'll lose nearly £1k as a result, however as were haven't actually had that money for a few months it's more a case of not getting it back IYSWIM?

millymae · 30/03/2020 16:52

We had a U.K. cottage booked for this week The company we booked through offered the opportunity to rebook within 12 months but have agreed to increase that by a couple of weeks as I needed a date that fitted in with school holidays that we could afford.
The company was adamant that no refunds would be given and as the insurance I had specifically excluded pandemics it didn’t leave me any other option than to rebook.
I’m not without sympathy for the company - it must be a nightmare time for them but they are now sitting on a not insignificant amount of my money so I’ve got my fingers crossed they don’t go bust.

bruffin · 30/03/2020 16:57

Im supposed to be in Barcelona this week, no idea if i will get a refund. I am due one, but easyjet are doing everything to avoid refunds and am on phone to expedia at the moment for the hotel.

JorisBonson · 30/03/2020 16:59

We've moved our wedding from June - October with thankfully no loss of money as we could get the date for every place (registry office etc).

Honeymoon apartment was on booking.com so free cancellation.

BA are saying we aren't entitled to a travel voucher after cancelling our flights so that's a conversation for another day.

chocolicious · 30/03/2020 17:04

We should be in Lanzarote just now. The holiday was cancelled and we have received a full refund. Money was back in our account after 9 days.
We're booked to go to Boston in September so will have to wait and see if we can still go

JosephineKarlsson · 30/03/2020 17:04

@GarkandGookin - Lost the lot as small print says no refunds

Does the law of contract allow such an unreasonable term?

DippyAvocado · 30/03/2020 17:17

If you had a package holiday booked and it has to be cancelled by the provider based on FCO guidelines then they have to offer you a full refund. They can try to offer vouchers or rebooking instead but you are entitled to the refund if that's what you want.

At the moment, FCO guidelines only restrict travel until April 15th. If you choose to cancel a holiday after those dates, you won't get a refund.

Some good advice here:
