I am very proud of my ds7 who worked out the boy was different in the last line way before I did. We got 43 eventually before we saw the answer.

Missed the shoes too!

5 + (23 x 4) =
5 + 92 = 97

Crap, I'd missed it was multiplied by one chips.

That's quite an interesting example of what we focus on.

Ah just realised how many pages of answers there were! And that I am wrong.

Actually I make it 48 the boy is wearing two shoes and carrying two packets of chips

It's 48 not 43, you add the shoe (5) to the boy (19) then times by 2

Or am I completely wrong?

Oh just noticed only one shoe so 43.

1 shoe + man with 2 shoes and 2 cones × 1 cone

5 + (5+10+4) × 2
5 + 19 × 2
5+ 38
= 43

I couldn't figure out how everyone was suggesting such high numbers - all I could see as the totals were 3, 2 and 1. It was only when I finally clicked on the picture after reading what the answer was that I could see they were in fact 30, 20 13.

Ok its 43! Just noticed its mulitplied by only one chips/bunch (no idea what is wrapped in newspaper) not two! I can do the maths but am clearly not very observant

@Ellapaella BODMAS rules say you do the multiplication first so instead of 5 + (19×2) you have 5 + 38

Top line shows that a shoe is 5 (if we assume two symbols together are to be added, not multiplied. Personally I have an urge to multiply concatenated symbols ...)

So, top line two shoes+ two shoes + two shoes = 30. One shoe is 5
Next line: boy + boy + two shoes = 20. One boy = 5
Next line: 2 cones + 2 cones + 1 boy = 13; 2 cones = 4; 1 cone = 2

Final line: shoe + boy x cone = 5+5x2 = 20

You need to look at what is in the hands of the boy in the last one. Sorry this has been on Twitter. I dont know the answer though
