Initials in signature - old fashioned?

BigGlasses · 29/03/2020 13:35

My parents, and a lot of their generation (late 60s) use their initials in their signature, for instance Dad’s is WRTSmith and Mum’s is MaryJSmith. However most of my generation (30/40s)such as me and my sister use just our first and last name, eg Emma Smith.

Is this just my family/friends? Not that it matters, i’m Just musing/bored.

( all names have been changed/made up obviously, but the format is what i’m On about)

I use my initial because I cba writing my whole name. So J Smith. I rarely have to sign but when I do it's always while someone is waiting for me to do so, so I like to make it as fast as I can

ofwarren · 29/03/2020 13:41

I'm 40 and I do initial then surname

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 29/03/2020 13:44

I sign first name middle initial surname.
Always have & I’m early 40’s.

BlackCatsRule88 · 29/03/2020 13:44

I’m in my thirties and my signature has always been initial then surname. Perhaps learned from parents? Or perhaps as my proper full name is 9 letters and my surname is longer. Or perhaps as I don’t go by my proper name and go by a shortened version.

TheThingWithFeathers · 29/03/2020 13:44

I use initials then surname and I am 41.

Moreisnnogedag · 29/03/2020 13:45

First initial, surname. Late 30s.

SeperatedSwans · 29/03/2020 13:45

I'm full first name. Initial middle name and full surname 😂

Think

Jane.J.Doe

SeperatedSwans · 29/03/2020 13:45

Forgot to add early 30's

browzingss · 29/03/2020 13:47

I’m in my 20s and use first initial and full surname. No reason behind it, perhaps that was what I was taught at school. It’s easier/faster than writing my full name I suppose.

ElevenOhFive · 29/03/2020 13:49

I use first name - middle initial - surname. I am 40 and was told by careers teachers in classes in the mid to late 90s that this was the correct way to sign your name - not sure why exactly, but I have stuck with it ever since!

CorianderLord · 29/03/2020 13:50

I'm 24 and use initial surname. Like S. Bloggs

ShirleyPhallus · 29/03/2020 13:50

Are you Mary J Blige?

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 29/03/2020 13:53

Mine is first initial and then a wiggly line that looks nothing like my surname. Mid 30’s.

BigGlasses · 29/03/2020 13:54

Just my circle of acquaintances then! I somehow feel that the initials make it seem more grown up, and my signature is a bit childish as in that it’s just my name written down. Maybe I should start putting my middle initial in, but then again can you change/evolve your signature ? It wouldn’t match previous things then.

I obviously have far too much time on my hands at the moment!

Initial then surname for me. My first name doesn’t lend itself well to writing it in full in a signature and my maiden name was 10 letters long so on forms etc I couldn’t have fitted it all in if I signed my first name too

SE13Mummy · 29/03/2020 13:56

I use initials and last name e.g. SE Mummy although my last name isn't legible and I use the middle initial because it makes an interesting shape when joined to the first letter of my last name. I'm 43. My dad uses the same format but my mum uses first name, middle initials then last name.

BigGlasses · 29/03/2020 13:57

Maybe my title is a bit misleading, old fashioned isn’t maybe what I meant. Maybe distinguished.

I use my first two initials and then my surname. Early 50s.

Rockbird · 29/03/2020 13:59

Initials and surname - A B Rockbird. It all flows nicely when squiggled together. I hate my handwriting but love my signature Grin

Fivefourthree · 29/03/2020 13:59

Mid 50s. I sign SABloggs

Elouera · 29/03/2020 14:00

My 99yr old nan uses: Jane Doe
73yr old mum uses J. Doe
Me (early 40's) uses J.Doe

LouisaJenny · 29/03/2020 14:00

I use my first initial, then about half of my surname. Its too long so I just squiggle it.

feesh · 29/03/2020 14:00

I don’t even know what I write! It’s just a massive scribble.

SuddenArborealStop · 29/03/2020 14:01

I use only initials. Habit formed from signing years of audit files. Also luckily my initials didn't change when I married so didn't have to learn a new signature.

PhantomErik · 29/03/2020 14:01

My signature is just initials. In fact because you can't read the initials (looks like a squiggle to anyone except me) I kept the same signature when I got married & changed surname.
