Are you called Jessica? Do you get any choice in people shortening your name?

if you're called Jessica, do you find people shorten it to Jess - even if you don't know them very well, or you prefer the full version?

Random enquiry.

I found myself referring to someone much senior to me as Jess, and I realised quite soon after that she never refers to herself as Jess, so I need to call her Jessica.

And I just wondered if it was a common issue or was it just me?!

(Im isolation bored. Thanks for taking part)

I’m Melanie and always introduce myself as Melanie. My work email is ‘Melanie’, all documents etc.

I’m always called Mel 😂

By colleagues, customers...anyone I randomly introduce myself to and say ‘hi I’m Melanie’ then guaranteed, 5 minutes later they’re calling me Mel 🤷🏻‍♀️

ShirleyPhallus · 22/03/2020 10:54

I’m a longer name (not Jessica) and it drives me crackers when I introduce myself and then someone shortens it.

Call someone the longer name and if they say “you can call me XYZ” then that’s fine.

Squirrelblanket · 22/03/2020 11:00

I have a two syllable name and it gets shortened to one. It drives me mad and it's worse when people get offended if you say 'Sorry, I prefer longerversion'.

Redyoyo · 22/03/2020 11:03

I have a long name i always introduce myself as long name everyone other than my father calls me by the shortened version.
My works email is the shortened version which pisses me off but i never correct anyone.

GenxfeellikeaBoomer · 22/03/2020 11:03

There are some names like this, people just go right ahead and shorten them. You could get a memo saying that Timothy, Kenneth and Gregory are arriving to the meeting and then when they arriving, people will say hello tim, ken and greg.

Like Melanie, a lot of people shorten my name but its long form is used too.

Lifeaback · 22/03/2020 11:09

I always feel odd shortening people’s name unless they refer to themselves as the shortened version- even if a natural one like Jess or Mel. It feels invasive to me (I’ve never been one for nicknames)

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 22/03/2020 11:22

That must be infuriating. Having a name that people automatically shorten.

I have a name that sounds ridiculous if you shorten it, so it's not something I've experienced.

I have three kids with names you can't shorten (without it sounding ridiculous).

Mines a three syllable name also. Think Roberts. Most people call me the full version.
I hate the one syllable version as it’s a man’s name. Or the two syllable version is just horrible.
I would’ve preferred being called Sue

Dowser · 22/03/2020 13:02

Roberta

Dowser · 22/03/2020 13:04

Boob, I called my boys long names that shortened to nice boys names, actually they are unisex
So, if they did get shorted ..they still sounded nice

kaldefotter · 22/03/2020 13:13

I have a longer name with 3 syllables (which I use), can be shortened to a relatively common 2-syllable version, or shortened further to a 1-syllable name (less common and is frankly like being over familiar and calling me by a pet name).

Lots of people have tried shortening my name. Interestingly, only men have tried calling me by the very short version.

I ignore anyone who doesn't use the name I use. That sounds rude, but what I mean is that I don't react to a name I don't use. If need be, I react eventually with an "Oh me? I thought you were talking to someone else".

Eventually, they stop trying that trick, especially if they want my help.

TerrorWig · 22/03/2020 13:31

I make a point to refer to someone as their full name unless they introduce themselves or let me know otherwise. I’d rather be the one slightly red faced when they say ‘only my mum calls me Catherine!’ than have them feel embarrassed to tell me they prefer the long version.

amusedbush · 22/03/2020 14:08

I’m a Jessica but I go by Jess - only my granny uses my full name. I’ve used the shorted version since I was about 12 and I don’t mind people presuming to use it, but I can’t stand the name Jessie. I correct people who call me that.

NonUrinatInVentum · 22/03/2020 14:34

If it's the same psycho Jessica I worked for ... Good luck GrinWine

WatchingTheBears · 22/03/2020 15:39

I have the opposite problem. My full name is the shorter version of a long name (eg: Cathy instead of Catherine). People constantly call me the long name and won’t believe me when I tell them it’s not actually my name.

Crinkle77 · 22/03/2020 15:39

It's not something I could get worked up about. I have a name that can be shortened to a couple of things. I don't really care what people call me.

otterbaby · 22/03/2020 15:42

I'm a Jessica - and I prefer Jessica. I find that people who email me at work for the first time ever refer to me as Jess, and it does wind me up! I don't mind friends/family calling me Jess (mostly because I don't have a choice) but complete strangers don't really have the right. If someone introduced themselves to me as a certain name, I would never shorten it without them saying so.

I'm sure she wasn't bothered by it but I always appreciate people who call me by my full name 😊

sunshinemachine · 22/03/2020 15:48

my sons edward and is always introduced as edward but ppl call him ed or eddy.

Whoareyoudududu · 22/03/2020 16:30

I’m Eleanor but I get called Ellie or Elle against my wishes all of the time. Really annoying, lived with it my whole life.

jess3817 · 22/03/2020 16:38

I'm Jessica, last ten years or so I've always gone by Jess, introduce myself as that. Letters, doc and dentist appointments im Jessica ( and my mum calls me that if ive been naughty 😆😆)

mrssunshinexxx · 22/03/2020 16:40

I'm a Jessica
Don't like it when strangers/people I barely know call me Jess but family and friends mostly do closets friends call me Jessy x

SecretWitch · 22/03/2020 16:41

My name is Tabitha, I’ve had people I’ve just been introduced to refer to me as Tabby. I gently interject with “Sorry, I prefer to be called Tabitha”

DreamingofSunshine · 22/03/2020 16:59

Same @mrssunshinexxx I don't like people presuming what they can call me.

BikeRunSki · 22/03/2020 17:02

I usually called people by the name therly are first introduced to me as. I was the only person to call my uni boyfriend my his full name and a common abbreviation.

I have the opposite problem. My name sounds like the beginning of a much more popular longer name, but the spellings are different. My name is not generally nickname for the longer name (although the first syllable is commonly a nn for both names). I’d say at least 75% of the new people I meet assume I have the longer name, and call me it anyway.

MrsT1405 · 22/03/2020 17:55

People do the opposite and call me eg Susan when my actual name is Sue.
