Is getting a takeaway ok?

Fancy fish & chips for tea. There was a thread about this before I think but just wondering if folks are still getting Chinese etc?

@SunshineDays2019 no. I'm the most sensible one in here and I'm trying to tell you it's not a very good idea. I don't want you to get it. Thanks.

PotholeParadise · 22/03/2020 15:01

No. The takeaway staff coukd have the virus, it's on their hands, it's all over the packaging, you then touch the packaging
You put the packaging in the bin, then you wash your hands, get cutlery out of the kitchen drawer
then the cutlery and then shovel food into your mouths.

Fixed that for you.

PotholeParadise · 22/03/2020 15:02

Can I just emphasis that the above with handwashing before you get cutlery out the drawer is what you should do normally?

CarolHasAnotherUTI · 22/03/2020 15:03

It sounds like some people have missed the advice on how hand washing can kill the virus.

Spied · 22/03/2020 15:04

I couldn't sit and enjoy a takeaway at this time.
No guarantee the people making it aren't coughing, sneezing or touching things that are contaminated.
I know we can never be sure of this really, but during this crisis I'd take no chances.

KatherineJaneway · 22/03/2020 15:04

Yes it's fine.

CarolHasAnotherUTI · 22/03/2020 15:06

@Spied I would say that it's currently much less likely that anyone will be doing that than at any other time in history.

It's impossible to take no chances.

Bioprepper · 22/03/2020 15:07

Erm you very much can catch a virus if it’s been touched by someone who hasn’t washed their hands or has coughed on it. The virus would have to be heated to High temps to be killed but it could come into contact with the food after cooking. The paper or packaging could contain the virus and it goes onto food. The delivery driver could be coughing/sneezing and you touch the packaging then eat the food. It doesn’t matter what rating they have it could happen.

I’m not a stupid person I am a public health specialist and I know how viruses work. Personally I wouldn’t risk a take away, just like I’m not buying pre prepared foods from a supermarket. The only way I’d eat fish and chips is if I’ve seen it be prepared and cooked, it’s not been touched with hands and it’s placed in my own container and taken home by me. But then I’d have to come in contact with the person cooking it. Just no not for me sorry.

I hope so because I'm hoping to sell lots! I own a coffee shop and yesterday we took the same amount of money in takeaways as a normal Saturday. My cake orders were also up, with people ordering and paying for cakes for months from now. My local asda has ordered 8 days worth of buffets for their staff as they've been ordered to support small businesses by HO. I am eternally grateful to all my friends and customers for continuing to order from me to make sure I'm still there when this is all over!

I don't approve of fatalism, because it is so destructive, but if Covid-19 is so rife that catching it from a takeaway box is actually a significant risk, I will have already caught it through buying food in the supermarket, and had to cook it myself for my trouble.

Wannabangbang · 22/03/2020 15:18

Probably the same risk as touching products from supermarket tbh.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 22/03/2020 15:32

🤦‍♀️
no...you take the food from the bag...you put the bag in the bin...you wash your hands....you put the food on to plates...you dispose of the containers....you wash your hands...then with your CLEAN hands get cutlery out and then you eat.

Maybe your hygiene still isn’t currently very good but some of us are pretty good with the hand washing

rayoflightboy · 22/03/2020 15:41

I got a McDonalds delivered yesterday. Its depressing enough without having a takeaway to look forward to.

adaline · 22/03/2020 15:42

It's absolutely fine.

We're having chippy tea tonight Grin

You phone up and place your order (paying over the phone), then either get it delivered contactless, or go and wait in your car outside and they bring it out to you.

I'm all for supporting local business where possible.

adaline · 22/03/2020 15:44

No guarantee the people making it aren't coughing, sneezing or touching things that are contaminated.

No different to all the food you buy from the supermarkets, surely? Factory workers could be sneezing over everything you buy and you'd have absolutely no idea.

For me, it's more important to support local businesses during times like this. If you can catch the virus through touching the packaging then we might as well never buy anything and just starve to death.

noblegiraffe · 22/03/2020 15:47

No evidence that it’s spread by food, even if someone coughs on your dinner.

But you have to do supermarket shopping anyway so you already have that risk, this is an additional needless one.

Oh well. 🤷

JasonBrun · 22/03/2020 17:12

The time lag between factory workers touching the product and you buying it is much longer and should protect you.

I work in kitchens and understand food hygiene. It is not safe. Also worth noting that hospitality has a very "suck it up and carry on" culture- people are expected to come into work when they are ill.

Blankscreen · 22/03/2020 17:24

We are avoiding takeaways.

I've also been wiping all food packages that our coming into the house.

It only takes the person preparing your takeaway to have it and breathe on your cooked food. Regardless of how much you wash your hands you will be eating infected food. Foods purchased in supermarket are largely made in factories and workers have to wear masks and hair nets etc. I don't see that in the local takeaway.

noblegiraffe · 22/03/2020 17:26

It only takes the person preparing your takeaway to have it and breathe on your cooked food.

This is not true. See the photo attached to the post 3 above yours.

adaline · 22/03/2020 17:28

The science disagrees with you. There's no evidence it can be transmitted via your food.

We should be supporting our local businesses as far as possible, or they won't be here for us when this is over.

Blankscreen · 22/03/2020 17:36

I'm sorry I just don't get how we are being told no to go walking about within 2 metres of people because it is airborne yet they can breath, couch sneeze into my food which I then eat and I'll be fine??

noblegiraffe · 22/03/2020 17:44

Because the virus spreads by being put into your respiratory tract and you don’t tend to stick your food up your nose.

CarolHasAnotherUTI · 22/03/2020 17:47

people are expected to come into work when they are ill

Not at the moment. At the moment, even if someone in their house has symptoms they are expected to stay away.
