Would you go to an outdoor gym?

No equipment, small group, highlighting the need to respect social distancing. In a park or open space.

Not sure.
There's outdoor gym equipment near me and I was toying with using it wearing gloves.

mooboy · 22/03/2020 10:02

I would, if I was fit enough - but I know the self appointed CV police will not be happy.

NuffSaidSam · 22/03/2020 10:02

No, not in a group.

I would use one of those park gyms if no-one else was using it. Could maybe have two people using it at the same time if they're on opposite sides because they're quite big. Anymore than that and the 6ft rule is going to get broken.

What do people not understand about not encouraging congregating in groups.

It's a slippery slope, why can't people be determined to hunker down for the next 12 weeks, do a walk if they want exercise or a bike ride but stop thinking they don't need to follow the rules of this crisis. It isn't a lifetime.

Eckhart · 22/03/2020 10:09

@daisychain It follows the rules of social distancing.

daisychain01 · 22/03/2020 10:09

It goes to prove the experts were absolutely right, it's only been a week and already people are bored of it, trying to find work arounds.

Unfortunately what starts out being a reasonable idea will end up an uncontrolled nightmare as more and more people try to get involved and spoil the reasonable idea.

1066vegan · 22/03/2020 10:10

Not sure. I stopped my gym classes a week ago and was glad that gyms and leisure centres were finally closed as so many people were still going.

We are still being told that - at the moment - fresh air and exercise are good for us.

I think that an outdoor class with no equipment could be safe if everybody keeps at least a couple of metres away from each other.

Quarantino · 22/03/2020 10:10

What's an outdoor gym with no equipment? Just exercising in the park?
I'd be avoiding touching ANY public equipment made of metal or plastic. Park play equipment etc.

Eckhart · 22/03/2020 10:11

If feel like those outdoor equipment gyms are more dangerous, because of touching things. In this group, people are 2m apart or more at all times.

OP posts:
daisychain01 · 22/03/2020 10:14

self appointed CV police will not be happy.

Self-appointed CV police, or people who recognise the emergency and want people to stay safe.

My fitness is going to take an absolute dive but I'd rather do what's needed for the longer term than just 12 weeks.

If the OP was about an individual doing gym in the park that's different to groups of people. But hey I'll butt out because this stuff is just winding me up.

AntennaReborn · 22/03/2020 10:15

A local PT is putting classes on in the car park of the (closed) gym.

Judging by the FB posts it is very safe, they are using the car parking spaces to keep a good distance from each other (at least 1 empty space between 2 ppl) and there is no equipment so they do bodyweight exercises.

It seems like a good idea and a good way to maintain physical and mental health

Eckhart · 22/03/2020 10:16

@Quarantino burpees/mountain climbers/press ups/squat thrusts are listed as examples. I think there's a lot you can do without equipment.

OP posts:
NuffSaidSam · 22/03/2020 10:16

Touching gym equipment in the park is relatively low risk if you either wear gloves or hand sanitise before and afterwards and do a good soap and water wash when you get home.

You're much more likely to catch it from another person in a gym class! Even if it is outside.

daisychain01 · 22/03/2020 10:19

Judging by other threads on here, municipal parks, paths and open spaces are becoming clogged up by parents taking their kids out on bikes, so the ability to segregate a group from other members of the general public will be very challenging as the weather gets better.

This could become the same problem as in Italy and Spain, we need to learn from those lessons, no ifs or buts if we want to be safe.

Eckhart · 22/03/2020 10:20

@daisychain01 If other people want to go down a slippery slope that's up to them. This group says it's stringent about social distancing, and if anybody breaches the rules, they're excluded immediately and permanently. I don't think it's a 'work around'. I think it's finding a new way in light of the new restrictions. None of your arguments hold water.

I'm so nervous about catching or spreading CV but can't logically think of a reason I shouldn't go to this group.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/03/2020 10:20

Park gyms should be fine if you wear gloves, wash clothes when you get home. The equipment is usually well spaced and, as long as you can get to and from them without meeting lost of poeple, I would. Indeed I will be, as ours is close to home and I can carry on walking if there are a few people using it already!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/03/2020 10:21

In fact, I may take my MudDaddy and wash the bloody equipment before and after I use it. A publiic service to boot!

PinkBuffalo · 22/03/2020 10:23

I thought not supposed to be in groups? Out gym not doing outside exercise unless you do it by your own, cos we not a,lowed to see friends/family while all this going on.
I only go out by own walking/shopping/to work so not coming into close contact with anyone cos I live by own as well.
We not supposed to be in groups

NuffSaidSam · 22/03/2020 10:27

The reason you shouldn't go to the group is because the rules will be breached.

People will forget. They'll come too close. It will be too busy. As you're moving to exercise spaces will close etc.

The rules are clear. No social groups. Outdoor exercise is fine.....by yourself (or those you're already in isolation with).

But you know this.

If you didn't have any doubts you'd have just gone and done it and not posted here.

Do what you think is right.

PunkAssMoFo · 22/03/2020 10:27

Personally, I think online classes would be more sensible. The more we people who are out and about, the more likelihood of total lockdown.

It’s not about restrictions, it’s about looking at the bigger picture and social responsibilities.

cocomelon23 · 22/03/2020 10:31

So it's not an outdoor gym it's an outdoor exercise class? That should be fine as you won't be touching gym equipment.

TiggerRoll · 22/03/2020 10:40

The guidelines say "Avoid large and small gatherings in public spaces..."

daisychain01 · 22/03/2020 11:45

That's my point @PinkBuffalo

Fair enough OP, if my arguments don't stack up then do whatever you feel you can deal with. I think the fact you have doubts must surely mean your logic is telling you to follow the experts' guidance even if your heart wants to cling onto some normality. We are not in normal times I'm afraid
