My answer to the food shortage

I went off to the local supermarket to see what was left over, what people are not buying.
Any soup with lentils in, any kind of bean medley in tins, exotic veg, any kind of vegan food absolutely tops the list, long life soya/coconut milk/extreme hardcore wholewheat cereals, canned fruit in juice, pesto there was tons of in all flavours but the fat free version was particularly reviled by the shoppers, tins of coconut milk, there was a whole ccabinet of untouched potato waffles which I thought was bizarre, I love them, tofu and free from stuff.
i came home and packed my larder with all of this stuff.
This morning I had wholewheat cereal with longlife unsweetened coconut milk and it was delicious - not the canned stuff, milk replacement.
Lunch I had potato waffles topped with pesto and salad and tonight I'm having a green curry made with fried tofu and a bag of salad.
its all perfectly acceptable and is pretty much free food out there.
There were loads of bread substitutes like Indian breads, non sliced loaves, other bits and pieces. I don't eat a lot of bread so it was perfect.
I'm going to go to Morrisons tomorrow and clean up over there in the unfashionable food isle Wink
I'll be healthy if nothing else.

You are visiting supermarkets each day just to check what foods people don't prefer?

Nice one. Completely irresponsible. Stay at home, you say your larder is stocked so don't go to fucking Morrison's.

Cheesypotato · 21/03/2020 15:08

and free from stuff
Please don't buy free from stuff unless you actually need it.

BeeFarseer · 21/03/2020 15:10

If you don't need Free From items, PLEASE don't buy them.

Did you actually need any of this?
If not so now you not only have 'ordinary' food in your cupboards you are buying up all the vege/vegan/free from stuff to? Why just because people arent buying it quick enough for you so you might as well take it all?
What about those of us who use free from stuff for a reason? You can use the tins etc in normal cooking but we cant use the non free from stuff!
If you are stocked up why do you need to go taking more free from stuff from the people who need it tomorrow?

We ran out of free from milk in my supermarket including the long life stuff..now i know why.

ClientQueen · 21/03/2020 15:15

Try your local Turkish/Polish supermarkets!
Ours has all this, plus they have wraps, bread, meat and are making fresh naan bread daily

If your larder is “packed” you don’t need to go to Morrison’s tomorrow

  1. it’s an unnecessary trip
  2. people buying food they don’t currently need is the PROBLEM
JaneEyre7 · 21/03/2020 15:21

People like you are the reason why this country is in such a state right now.

My 2 granddaughters both have coeliac disease and DD has really struggled this week to get them anything. Well done you and your fully stocked larder. ((slow hand claps))

Crinkle77 · 21/03/2020 15:39

You know what there is food in the supermarkets but there's just not the usual choice that we're used to.

IWantToBreakFreee · 21/03/2020 15:42

"My answer to the food shortage"

...there is no food shortage though, this is the problem, people thinking there is a shortage and therefore stockpiling

madcatladyforever · 21/03/2020 15:49

Dear oh dear get a fucking grip people stop jumping down everyones throats constantly and getting so hysterical!!!

Where did I say I go out everyday? I've been out once in the last month other than to go to work!! Other than that once I've been totally self isolating. I had to go out this time because there are no home delivery slots whatsoever because they are all taken, I live completely alone and I have NO food left.

I waited until it was all gone.

I'm going out tomorrow as well because the co-op is extremely expensive and I don't have much money so I'm going to Morrisons tomorrow to try and get some cheaper items before I go back to work on a 7 day stretch on the wards.

Shall I refuse to treat you on my ward because you've been irresponsible enough to go shopping and bought too many toilet rolls and hogged all the delivery slots.

What would you ask me to do then to get food? Shall I rummage in bins? Get off your high horses you stupid women.

We are all doing what it takes to survive so I suggest we try and support each other a little bit instead of behaving like a bunch of savages.

TatteredOwl · 21/03/2020 15:51

Well said OP. I totally got where you're coming from

madcatladyforever · 21/03/2020 15:52

AND every time my colleagues go to the supermarket as well the shelves are stripped bare probably by people like you binge shopping and leaving nothing for anybody else so we have to eat stuff we don't like.

OP posts:
madcatladyforever · 21/03/2020 15:53

Thank you tattered owl - I think people have gone absolutely mental.

IfIWereYou · 21/03/2020 15:56

👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 you can't mention shopping without hysterical posters slamming you op

PurpleDaisies · 21/03/2020 15:57

It is incredibly selfish to buy free from stuff if you don’t need it. I couldn’t find non dairy milk for my friend’s allergic child.

There is no food shortage. There’s a supply and demand issue because selfish people are panic buying.

All the supermarkets I’ve been to recently have well stocked fruit and vegetable aisles. Yes, pasta and rice might have gone but there is other stuff to eat.

haba · 21/03/2020 15:57

I have to say the only saving grace has been that the freefrom stuff has mainly been available. I have been so worried about my DD who has multiple intolerances. No loo roll is one heck of a problem for most people- it's far worse for a teenager that goes through a roll a day with IBS!

haba · 21/03/2020 15:58

That said, they had no lacto-free milk today, so we'll have to ration it for a bit.

winniesanderson · 21/03/2020 16:02

Yeah I don't want to pile on Op but please people don't buy free from if you don't need it. My youngest can't tolerate cows milk and it's been a mission getting the only non dairy milk she will tolerate. The nearest place it's available now anyway is in one supermarket 25 miles away and I don't drive. I look after children with all sorts of allergies and their parents don't need the stress of finding foods they can eat on top of everything else. I commend your thinking outside the box though op. We do all need to make do with what we can get if we can.

JanewaysBun · 21/03/2020 16:08

There s none of that in London. People have bought all the non dairy milk and I can't have dairy milk because of DD.

Lynda07 · 21/03/2020 16:36

You have to eat and drink, op, and it sounds as though you haven't gone over the top - as you say, you've only been out once in the last month apart from work. Your work is important too so you must keep your energy levels up.

I take the points people have made about 'free from' milk, my cousin has it. My milkman still brings milk, other things are not available but there is milk, maybe not the type you would normally have but it goes down the same way.

I noted there is now a shortage of eggs, butter and spreads. I have ordered from milkman to leave on Tuesday but anything could happen between now and then, I was expecting some this morning but had an email telling me 'unforeseen circumstances' prevented the delivery of them and I was refunded. I live in hope for Tuesday.

In these times with such shortages we'll find ourselves adapting and eating things that we wouldn't normally. For example, using evaporated milk instead of cream on tinned fruit rather than fresh. I used to have that as a child at home and for school dinners. Being less fussy about the bread you eat - if all you can find is a white sliced, so be it, it won't harm most of us (those who must have gluten free are different). I have some long life part baked baguettes which is very useful - also no hardship because I like them anyway. Some people bake their own bread but currently there is a shortage of ingredients.

If we are open to doing something different it will make life easier.

It's funny you saying the Co-op is expensive op, I've always got amazing bargains in my local Co-ops and used to come home feeling very pleased. I suppose they vary according to where you are. If you use Co-op online delivery, that is more expensive than going into the shop. Any
way they aren't functioning at present, I had an order booked for one evening this week and it just didn't turn up.

You're doing OK op, good for you and well done for work too. Just avoid Alpro and the like from now on.

Crinkle77 · 21/03/2020 16:55

We ordered a couple of extra pints of milk on Friday no problem. I went to Tesco Thursday and there were a lot of gaps however there was plenty of other food just not some of the things I wanted. You have to adapt and buy other stuff instead. As a society we have had the luxury of choice and when we can't get what we want everyone goes in to.panic mode. I bet if someone from a poor remote African villagers in to the out shops at the moment they'd wonder what all the fuss was about.

Pedallleur · 21/03/2020 17:08

Went our local farm today, plenty of fresh eggs, duck and chicken. Asian stores have lots of stuff like chickpeas, lentils, rice etc. Our outdoor market rammed with fruit and veg. If you have access to these suppliers then go.

SilverySurfer · 21/03/2020 17:18

Interesting OP except I don't eat beans, pulses, rice, pasta, lentils, soya, wholewheat cereals etc.

How did the free range meat, cows milk, bread and vegetable/fruit, etc counters look?

crustycrab · 21/03/2020 17:42

"I came home and packed my larder with all of this stuff."

Right, so regardless of your massive drip feed Hmm you still don't need to go tomorrow.
