My answer to the food shortage

I went off to the local supermarket to see what was left over, what people are not buying.
Any soup with lentils in, any kind of bean medley in tins, exotic veg, any kind of vegan food absolutely tops the list, long life soya/coconut milk/extreme hardcore wholewheat cereals, canned fruit in juice, pesto there was tons of in all flavours but the fat free version was particularly reviled by the shoppers, tins of coconut milk, there was a whole ccabinet of untouched potato waffles which I thought was bizarre, I love them, tofu and free from stuff.
i came home and packed my larder with all of this stuff.
This morning I had wholewheat cereal with longlife unsweetened coconut milk and it was delicious - not the canned stuff, milk replacement.
Lunch I had potato waffles topped with pesto and salad and tonight I'm having a green curry made with fried tofu and a bag of salad.
its all perfectly acceptable and is pretty much free food out there.
There were loads of bread substitutes like Indian breads, non sliced loaves, other bits and pieces. I don't eat a lot of bread so it was perfect.
I'm going to go to Morrisons tomorrow and clean up over there in the unfashionable food isle Wink
I'll be healthy if nothing else.

I have struggled the last few days to find oat milk for DD2 who is allergic to dairy. I would urge people to avoid buying dairy free milks as an alternative to cows milk wherever possible as it makes it difficult for those who really need it.

Lynda07 · 21/03/2020 20:26

DaisyChain, I found this:

www.amazon.co.uk/Glebe-Farm-Gluten-Free-Oat-Drink/dp/B07V46GKZY/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=oat+milk&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1584822076&sr=8-2

There are others on Amazon too, one more expensive than that one but I don't know what it costs normally.

How old is your daughter? If she is old enough to understand she can go without the milk as long as she otherwise eats well. Regrettable of course but that's how it is at the moment.

The op doesn't deserve abuse, I doubt she'll buy non dairy milk again after reading the posts on here and when she did, the implications probably didn't enter her head. We are all human and allowed to make mistakes! On the whole I would say she sounds very sensible about her shopping, especially as she didn't go out to buy any for quite a while.

For example, using evaporated milk instead of cream on tinned fruit rather than fresh. I always keep a couple of pots of Elmlea in the cupboard. I know it's not cream, but it's good enough for most things.

Buying dairy free milk because dairy is all sold out doesn’t make you a bad person purely because you’re not vegan or lactose intolerant for heavens sake. Not sure why people have piled on the OP, she’s made some good points here really. I’ve also noticed things such as tofu, black beans, chickpeas etc are going untouched so adapting to a new diet temporarily is a good idea.

Black beans, chick peas and pretty much all other varieties of beans had all gone in the supermarkets I went to.

I'm vegan and can't get black beans for love nor money!

black beans

I've managed to get quite a few things from Amazon - I'm not a vegan though. Aren't there other things you can eat if you've run out of beans (assuming you do have some food, I sincerely hope you have Shock) ?

hallamoo · 22/03/2020 21:58

Lynda07 - thank you. I do have other food. It's just odd as usually not that many people are interested in buying black beans.

I have lentils, chickpeas and other stuff.
