Anyone else worried about food?

I have none. And each day I walk to a different supermarket (no car) and there's nothing to be had. I have a box of porridge, one carton of milk and a few tins of custard and some bananas. I don't own a freezer. Going to go out again today but then will have run out of all the shops I can realistically walk to. I hope that the shops get more in. If I even had a big bag of pasta I'd feel more relieved as I'd happily just eat that.

Ps this is absolutely NOT a begging thread Smile

Yeah I feel the same. I've ordered a big shop but the way things are looking, I'm not sure any of it will be in stock.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 20/03/2020 04:47

Op without outing you can you give a general idea of what area you live in?

Thepigeonsarecoming · 20/03/2020 04:48

I ask because in my area other than toilet roll and pasta the shelves are almost Norma, especially for fresh items like meat and veg

Mintjulia · 20/03/2020 04:49

Go to smaller shops. And buy smaller amounts. “I ordered a big food shop” isn’t helping. People just need to calm down.

Wafflehouse · 20/03/2020 04:55

Supermarkets are not the one stop shop they’ve always sold themselves as right now because people are still buying more than they need, even with the restrictions, they’re just filling their trollies across a wider variety of items. I say that as someone who works in a supermarket. I’ve been picking up bits and pieces as I need them from the smaller local shops and they seem don’t seem to have had supply issues. It’s a bit inconvenient though, not getting everything in one place, especially if you’re trying to minimise contact with other people.

Apolloanddaphne · 20/03/2020 05:08

There are lots of FB support groups springing up in many areas who can maybe help you out.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 20/03/2020 05:11

I agree with @Apolloanddaphne if you’re on Facebook search for “corvid-19 mutual aid” plus your home town/city. Hopefully you’ll find a group who can help you locally

YukoandHiro · 20/03/2020 05:13

Can I ask why you have none? I mean this sincerely - if there's a reason you weren't able to get out/plan in the last couple of weeks the mutual aid groups can definitely help you

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 20/03/2020 05:14

Obviously I don't know your situation or area, but I'd suggest getting up for 5.30am or so and being ready to shop at your nearest big supermarket at 6am.

I've found in my local area (S Yorks) that tinned and dry goods are selling out very early but fresh produce is readily available.

bushtailadventures · 20/03/2020 05:18

I am worried, yes. I'm on a restricted diet as well as being in isolation (vulnerable). I've ordered a 'big shop' ( 1 weeks worth of groceries because I only shop week to week) but if they don't have the stuff I eat I don't know what to do, everyone else in the house can eat anything, it's just me that is going to be in trouble.

Fatted · 20/03/2020 05:25

Considering everyone is meant to be in insolation they're all very busy buying food!!

Like others have said, the smaller shops like spars and coops are fairing better. Places that don't do home deliveries are also a good place to try because they are not being decimated by online shoppers as well.

Don't forget places like home bargains, B&M etc that also sell food items.

Hotwaterbottlelove · 20/03/2020 05:32

Around here smaller shops and petrol stations still have food.

Also try getting a gusto or hello fresh box delivered to you? And there is still lots of food on Amazon. Noodles, protein powders, long life milk...

Goatinthegarden · 20/03/2020 05:47

The shelves in the supermarkets in my city are certainly scarce and it’s annoying not having the usual choice. Try different vegetables, grains, whatever. I’m sure it will get boring and tedious....but we’re not going to starve.

Goatinthegarden · 20/03/2020 05:50

bushtailadventures it’s certainly more of a worry for those on restricted diets. My dad who is having severe digestive problems has been prescribed nutritional drinks as a back up. I know it’s an awful prospect, but Is this something that would help you?

Clutterbugsmum · 20/03/2020 05:53

Well your lucky Goatinthegarden. I unfortunately live in town but only have 2 small/medium supermarkets so food is scarce/not available.
For example it open yesterday at 6am and had sold out of most things by 6.30am.

CherryPavlova · 20/03/2020 06:03

It’s really hard for many NHS workers.
Tesco, for example, have set aside an hour from 9-10 twice a week for the medics. Trouble is many of them are in work from before 8am.

We’re also likely to be impacted because replenishing warehouses from imports from across Europe is going to be a challenge. We simply don’t produce enough at the moment.

And we voted for Brexit.......

CuriousCapricorn · 20/03/2020 06:06

I live on the outskirts of Liverpool which is a bloody big city and it’s ridiculous.

My dp went to 5 different shops for me last night and they were pretty much bare.
My friend works at Asda and told me that they opened at 6am yesterday and in the first 2 hours of trading they took £120,000 which is £1k a minute Shock and there is hardly anything in.

I’m not in the same position as op in that i have a freezer full and cupboards of dry stuff but I need fridge food and drinks and other stuff and feel bad now for worrying.

I’m planning on getting to Asda tomorrow for 6am. Dp is in work today and dd (9) is in school for her last day. Ds (17) is in 6th form college and it was supposed to shut today but a student has tested positive for Coronavirus and they asked everyone to leave ASAP at 3pm yesterday.

I would gladly help anyone in op’s situation if I knew.

QuimJongUn · 20/03/2020 06:21

Our Aldi has been absolutely brilliant. They've even had toilet roll most days this week. The only things they didn't have yesterday were baby formula and bread, but they're getting 3 deliveries a day. Also the customers are behaving fairly recently re social distancing and the staff are wonderful, so friendly and calm despite the incredible strain they must be under.

Crunchymum · 20/03/2020 06:40

My 2 local supermarkets (Waitrose and Sainsbury's) now dedicate their first hour to elderly and disabled customers.

I was in Sainsburys at 8am yesterday - as was many other non elderly and non disabled - and it was ransacked.

Going to try some smaller, independent shops today.

SQuueze · 20/03/2020 06:43

We’ve got lots of local shops doing delivery now. And the milk man is back, delivering potatoes, cheese, eggs. He’s great. So worth ringing round.

WillWinterEverEnd · 20/03/2020 06:57

Oh OP, are there any local Facebook groups you can join or friends you can ask to grab you some food if they see anything while they are out?
I sent my DH out last night try our weekly food shop and the shelves were pretty bare (no meat or bread at all) but we managed to get enough food to last us including some pasta and loo roll.
My local Aldi is getting deliveries every night and restocking the shelves from about 8pm onwards so it may be worth going out a little later in the evening if that is an option for you?

Yes I've ordered a big shop, like I would most months...less of the snarky comments. I am in the small minority who hadn't "panic bought" however when I am in self isolation with a one year old, l'm only being sensible to ensure I have ordered enough to see us through!

FrenchBoule · 20/03/2020 08:27

One small shop in the village with prices of the small shop (think over £1.50 for 1 tin of tuna).
How to stay calm when basic stuff like flour is nowhere to be seen?
My past shopping habit was buying in bulk where’s the cheapest as need to budget.
I don’t know what are we going to do when food runs out.
To further complicate stuff I live in arse end of nowhere 30 miles away from nearest supermarket.
I fully support the idea of restriction in how many items you can buy in one visit but can’t afford to buy everything in the small corner shop and items I’m allowed to buy are going to be hoovered up by the family in no time ( that’s if they are in stock in the first place, but they are not)

FrenchBoule · 20/03/2020 08:28

We’re going to be well and truly up the shit creek soon 😢
