Anyone else worried about food?

I have none. And each day I walk to a different supermarket (no car) and there's nothing to be had. I have a box of porridge, one carton of milk and a few tins of custard and some bananas. I don't own a freezer. Going to go out again today but then will have run out of all the shops I can realistically walk to. I hope that the shops get more in. If I even had a big bag of pasta I'd feel more relieved as I'd happily just eat that.

Ps this is absolutely NOT a begging thread Smile

Might be worth asking the staff when the deliveries come in. Everybody seems to assume availability will be best first thing but where I work, we get our ambient delivery around lunchtime so early afternoon is best on stuff like pasta.

Oldraver · 20/03/2020 16:55

There has been no meat/veg/pasta to be had in our town by the time we can get to the shops. OH only managed to get some meat from the butcher ( but no mince or chicken)

We're also trying to stuff for DS as he hasn't been able to get what he's wants and he eats basic stuff.

lubeybooby · 20/03/2020 16:58

many cafes, deli's and pubs round here are offering delivery where they didn't before. Could you do that for a few meals until stocks in shops are back?

Bluejuicyapple · 20/03/2020 17:33

Aldi has been excellent. They have about 80% of what I need. They didn’t have toilet paper, pasta or eggs but pretty much anything else. Our local shops are also well stocked i

Pedallleur · 20/03/2020 17:39

Not at the moment. Our local outdoor market had lots of fruit and veg, Hand soap etc. Fish/meat market had lots and as many eggs as you want

underneaththeash · 20/03/2020 19:14

We’ve been okay too. Turned up at usual time Yesterday and got everything except eggs (and the horrible bentos pie that my elderly neighbour wanted), so I got her a nicer one instead.
Sainsbury’s has eggs.

I think one of the issues is that people are not eating out at the moment. My friend who would usually eat out every day, has a huge Ocado order, that would normally be tiny. We eat out less so I haven’t changed ours substantially.

underneaththeash · 20/03/2020 19:14

Although, school have asked us to add extra for the food bank as they are really struggling.

Redcrayons · 20/03/2020 19:22

Not,at the moment.
The week before the madness started I did my big monthly shop so stocked up on all the basics and the stuff that's now in short supply. I usually Go for the BOGOF and make sure I've got spares so I did the same then.

Today I went out and managed to get everything I needed for my week meal plan except hot cross huns and paninis, neither are essential though.

My worry though is my DCs are now off school and can inahle the contents of the fridge in one sitting. In summer I have to shop 3 times a week to keep stocked up. Ive told them they need to stop the constant grazing.

TravellingSpoon · 20/03/2020 19:23

My only concern is that my severely autistic son will only eat plain penne pasta with butter for his dinner, nothing else, and pasta has been so scarce in every shop I gi in.

I managed to get one bag today at a corner shop so I am clear for a couple of days and he doesnt eat much of it, and will try again on sunday.

Howmanysleepsnow · 20/03/2020 19:51

Join Nextdoor.com There’s lots of people offering to pick up things for others/ share and food companies that previously supplied hospitality looking to sell to the public.

Ariela · 20/03/2020 20:00

Try your corner shop.

MrsPear · 20/03/2020 20:00

Think outside the box. It’s saturday tomorrow so google your town and markets, farm shops, pound shops, ethnic food suppliers and eco pantry shops - there are some online too. Forget the big name supermarkets basically. I shop weekly and refuse to be an immoral selfish bastard hoovering every thing up in sight - there is going to be huge waste with mountains of bin bags to collect within a couple of weeks.
on Thursday I did my shop and Tesco was bare except for brown rolls, banana yogurts, ham and crisps. I then went to the stall which is set up in an alleyway on the high street for fruit and vegetables. Iceland I found onions and free range eggs and fish and a pizza for an easy tea one night. H went to Turkish supermarket on the way home and picked up some chicken and chopped lamb - although bitterly complained that had hiked there prices. He wouldn’t say as I would have a heart attack although he mentioned his brother was charged £8 for 6 bottles of water Shock we are lucky to have the health and time. Good luck with the hunt

iklboo · 20/03/2020 20:00

Do you have veg box deliveries in your area? A lot are doing other foods as well.

TheNestedIf · 20/03/2020 20:28

It's seriously worrying me.

I mostly eat fresh veg and salad which can't be stocked up on for long. Tinned or frozen would do but there was none of that left yesterday. The Sainsbury's I visited had so little on the shelves the shop had a noticeable echo. Even the smaller corner shops I had passed had been plundered. I managed to get 2 bags of radishes from the Tesco local earlier and that was it.

What's not helping is that I'm currently having difficulty walking and wouldn't be able to drive either so I have to pretty much pick one supermarket in one direction and hope. Obviously, I can't get a delivery slot.

Think I'm going to have to get up at about 5am on Monday and hedge my bets on the Sainsbury's I didn't visit yesterday. Hopefully there won't be a scrum like the one there apparently was at Wembley.

corythatwas · 20/03/2020 21:06

Bit of a crisis here. Just spent over a week in isolation due to flu; dd arrived home yesterday evening and now thinks she is running a temperature. We had enough food to feed 3 adults for a week, but we don't have enough to feed 4 for an additional fortnight of quarantine. No delivery slots online available. I know I need to lose weight but...

480Heath · 20/03/2020 21:13

Not at all worried, live rurally, small Coop, well stocked every day, village Post Office has all sorts, lots of farms around.
Also a village Coronavirus support page, everyone has a 24hour helpline number to call,no need to leave the house as someone will bring it to you if you cannot get out.

Never been so grateful to live where I do now.

Hope the elderly in our cities will not be left to fend for themselves.

HindsightIs2020 · 20/03/2020 21:15

I can't get any gluten free pasta. I've tried many shops over several days, but I can't drive at the moment (awaiting an operation) so it's extra difficult.

Growingboys · 20/03/2020 21:22

I too am interested in why you have none. This has been in the news for WEEKS - I have been adding small amounts to my weekly shop for well over a month to build up supplies.

(I am also helping out neighbours who were not so organised fyi).

But I just don't understand how anyone could have arrived in this position after the weeks/months of news we've had on the subject.

BooseysMom · 20/03/2020 21:25

Considering everyone is meant to be in insolation they're all very busy buying food!!

This. Plus the more panic buying there is and the more queuing up, the more frequent the contact with others is. It's a ticking time bomb

okiedokieme · 20/03/2020 21:27

There was plenty of food at the opening time of Aldi if you can get to one, aim to arrive 15 mins before opening as the line was long but I got everything apart from paracetamol and sanpro today. Best wishes

Dowser · 20/03/2020 21:41

My town was business as usual. Lovely sunny day, there was barely a parking spot to be had down on the beach.
Loads in the shops, fish shops, restaurants
When I ran my grandsons home at 7pm the town was on a booze buying frenzy.
Never seen it so hectic.

TheNestedIf · 20/03/2020 23:02

I too am interested in why you have none.

It wasn't bad planning. My cupboards and freezer were fairly well stocked and I always have kept items in reserve even before Coronavirus. I had the luck to have purchased a large pack of toilet rolls, even though I had a several left from the previous pack, just before all this kicked off. However my flat is tiny with little storage so there's a limit. I'm now eating into the spares (not the toilet rolls, obviously) and I haven't been able to replenish them because there is no stock to replenish with.

TheNestedIf · 20/03/2020 23:03

Tip for paracetamol, by the way. Our local pharmacy is now keeping them behind the counter and rationing them.

TheNestedIf · 20/03/2020 23:04

Sorry, posted too soon...

If your local pharmacy is doing similar, you may only get one pack but it's better than nothing.

KatherineJaneway · 21/03/2020 06:51

My local pharmacy had some hand sanitizers in stock but like the post above, only behind the counter so you had to ask.
