Adapting to WFH long term - show me your desks!

I’ve been working at the kitchen table.
The chair is definitely not suitable for sitting on all day. I don’t think I’ll be back in work for the foreseeable so looking online at desks and chairs. Has anyone bought anything nice lately? I saw one on Made but it’s estimating 4 weeks.

We went to Ikea last night at 8pm to buy a desk chair as DW is working at the dining room table and her back was hurting. We weren't alone- the desk/chairs section was HEAVING!

iklboo · 19/03/2020 16:27

I've been working from home twice a week for a few years but if DH doesn't mend my massage seat soon there will be Words.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 19/03/2020 16:29

I don't have a desk. I'm working from my bed as the warmest place in the house, or my sofa.

Boopear · 19/03/2020 16:35

I bought this one last week and it is fabbioso ... although it seems to have gone up by about £40 in a week Hmm

Nice & comfy chair that also twirls

peachypetite · 19/03/2020 17:46

I’ve been stuck on calls all day my legs and back are aching!

I have this in ash colour

www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/bekant-desk-sit-stand-black-stained-ash-veneer-black-s89282218/

Not cheap but so good for you standing up instead of sitting down!

thequeenbeyondthewall · 19/03/2020 18:02

I have worked from home for the last ten years. I'm ashamed to say this is my desk Grin

TerrorWig · 19/03/2020 18:05

I cleared off my dressing table so I can work from home. I knew it was coming that the schools would be closed, I didn’t want to have to try and navigate round the kids from the kitchen table!

This is my set up Smile don’t bother zooming I was looking at a blinds company! Grin

We were lucky, ikea messed up our new kitchen work top in the summer which left us with a massive spare piece. DH popped to Ikea the other night to buy 4 legs and built himself a beast of a desk which has taken over the play room (now renamed daddy's office). He has 2 massive screens so need a a lot of space. My laptop is much smaller so I'm on the dining table

Chemenger · 19/03/2020 18:10

We were allowed to bring our office chairs home. I have a second monitor, an ergonomic mouse, a footrest and a full sized keyboard as well. I know that not having any of this will result in pain somewhere, laptops are torture to me.

iismum · 19/03/2020 18:14

I’ve just ordered a yoga ball from amazon for £10 as my office chair - it’ll be here tomorrow. This is what DH - who works from home all the time - uses. I was initially skeptical, but having borrowed his today, it’s really comfy. Plus it’s good for your posture and core and keeps you moving a bit.

sonjadog · 19/03/2020 18:29

I have started to swap around chairs at the kitchen table during the day. Last night my back and shoulders were aching and I realized I have been hunched over the table for a week.

CaurnieBred · 19/03/2020 18:40

Already was WFH one day a week so have a proper office chair (Ikea) and use the stool as my footrest

Yeh it’s awful for back etc to sit on the sofa or on a kitchen chair!!!! Argos have nice desks but all out of stock.

We have an actual study. But it's also the dumping ground for anything without a home so only room for one to WFH.

Me and DH have daily disagreements on who gets the study and who has the dining table. The snack box is in the study. Which is a pro and a con.

womanthatfelltoearth · 19/03/2020 19:14

Another one that managed a trip to Ikea for a chair and desk. They are closing all stores from tomorrow so those that want something need to go sooner rather than later.

midsomermurderess · 19/03/2020 19:14

Office chairs are particularly ugly so not great if you don't have a dedicated work space. Depending on what I'm doing I make do with the kitchen table or sofa and try to move about a fair amount,

Ohffs66 · 19/03/2020 19:15

I bought a desk top from Ikea for about a tenner and some coloured hairpin legs:

www.thehairpinlegcompany.co.uk/collections/hairpin-legs/products/4-x-hairpin-legs-28inch-71cm-desk-dining-table?variant=8938191552566

Voila!

peachypetite · 19/03/2020 19:18

I have been planning to convert my box room into a study for a while!

No money or space to bother be able to have a proper office, so its the dining table for me.

I did have the option to bring home all my kit (I have two screens plus laptop) but I went with just the laptop. I'm part time anyway and as suspected the schools closed, so I doubt I'll be spending 7.5 solid hours in front of screen.

puppymouse · 19/03/2020 19:37

Another one who risks it and works from bed. I get so cold. The phone reception is better and it means DH can have the kitchen table.

sonjadog · 19/03/2020 20:01

Yoga ball is a good idea. I will have a look at them on Amazon. I definitely need to do something about my posture when working.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/03/2020 20:06

Here's my desk. Thankfully it's full size as I used to WFH all the time in a previous job. Which is also why I have a two screen set up!
