The Italians are saying they wished they had kept their teenagers in.
I wouldn’t let my teen go.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 19/03/2020 23:30

I live by the beach so will be taking walks down there, my son is on the chubby side and is autistic if I keep him home all day he’s going to balloon and then everyone will be complaining about obesity,no contact with anyone so should be fine. He certainly won’t be going out shopping, to the cinema etc, not that he did much of that before.

HavenDilemma · 20/03/2020 04:39

@Hadenoughofitall441 You really don't get it, do you? Being a little on the chubby side does not mean the rules do not apply to you or your son

Casino218 · 20/03/2020 04:47

Be kind everyone. This is an awful situation and people are rightly struggling with it. So let's just be kind on Mumsnet for once.

  • If you cough then some thousands of droplets are shot into the air at around 60kph (35mph)
  • these droplets will travel 3-5m (10-17 feet)
  • These droplets will contain virus particles in an infected person.
  • The virus particles are small and light so float in the air.
  • If a person breathes in only 20-30 virus particles then they can become infected

Meet outside, stay outside, stay well apart

Babysharkdoodoodood · 20/03/2020 05:23

My son is at a residential college and he's not coming home until Easter now. He usually comes home on Wednesday night for work experience on Thursday and then for the weekends.

He said he's just staying in his room for online classes and popping to the canteen for food. All the under 18's have been sent home.

I'm glad he's being sensible but I do miss him. We're just having lots of messenger chats and we also have a family WhatsApp for extended family.

He also realises that when he does come home he can't go out with his mates. His gf's going back home to NI if she can still get there. Lots of Netflix parties organised.

I've been going for walks at night. Day 4 of s-iso and I'm getting stir crazy, so it must be hell for sociable teens. Can you imagine how horrible this would be without internet?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 20/03/2020 06:14

No one should be socialising - the advice is not to meet and stay well apart it’s to not engage with non essential socialising ffs it’s not difficult to understand

Schools have stayed open that’s more to do with workers needed in the nhs etc now plans have been put in place and the increase of those now being infected

Some people have to go to work so it’s nt the same

No one has to go to hang out with their friends. It’s going to be very difficult for sometime this is a time that shall be looked back in history a virus bringing the world to a standstill

Scruffyoak · 20/03/2020 07:28

It confuses me that outdoor spaces like NT are advertising come for fresh air if we are not meant to go out?

averythinline · 20/03/2020 07:38

Current Message is can go out but on your own/far apart from others in big space...and only if you are well - not sympomatic .......

Thats why NT - walking along the beach just you n your teen is probably a really good thing to do ... I am going to start c25k with dc round the big park near us - unfortunately they just have me for company! -
a friend of DC has suggested tennis as you are far apart still thinking the logistics of that one - will need supervison to keep safe space

Scruffyoak · 20/03/2020 07:47

Thank you. DC have last day (ever!) At school today. I think we will start couch lto 5k while allowed. Going early in morning or late at night. Maybe they might actually talk to me!

Hadenoughofitall441 · 20/03/2020 23:54

@HavenDilemma I very much get it, so how about you get your head out your ass, Ill be taking my kids for walks in the outdoors, by ourselves, we ain’t gonna do a hugathon with anyone we see.. it’s says social distancing, we ain’t having a party and inviting the whole town. Jesus Christ some people....

shinynewapple2020 · 21/03/2020 00:25

@HavenDilemma what rules are you talking about? There are currently no rules whatsoever in place which say that people cannot go out into an open space, park, beach etc as long as they maintain the 2 m rule when they come into contact with other people.

FGS if people are going to be hysterical at least get your facts right.

LINABE · 21/03/2020 01:29

A complete LOCKDOWN and the Military/Police called in to make sure people adhere to it. As it is in Europe. It will be the ONLY way because of complete and utter stupid selfish morons. It is all I have said since I saw what is happening in Europe.

Amortentia · 21/03/2020 01:47

I’ve got a 16yo whose desperate to get out and I really feel for him. But, we’ve been in lock down for the past week and will be staying that way for a very long time because my other teen has a condition that puts her at very high risk. The thought of seeing her gasping for air or being admitted to hospital alone is enough to all of us off going out.

I really feel for teenagers right now, their education is being disrupted in a way that none of us have experienced. The ones finishing school for good are not getting to enjoy all the celebrations that go with it. Plus, I think many are really worried about passing this virus on and what might happen to their families. It’s a very stressful time and even though they might have social media they will experience isolation in a way most of us have never known.

Rubymay · 21/03/2020 02:13

Look, there is no way teenagers are going to be two feet away from each other, they are putting everyone at risk if they are together. Speak to your son, explain why this needs to happen, he will be fine! Have four teenagers at home, two sets of grandparents around the corner, they understand it has to be done to keep them safe!! This includes girlfriends/boyfriends. We are taking it seriously here in Ireland, schools closed for everyone, not all parents stepping up to the mark as we do have groups hanging about but most parents have put their foot down!! Honestly parents need to do their bit.

Amortentia · 21/03/2020 02:26

Honestly parents need to do their bit

Totally agree, it’s very frustrating that there are parents who are letting their kids out to meet up in our local park. My ds is desperate to join them. We’ve had to have a very frank conversation about what could happen if he became infected and passes it on.

I think parents need to realise that even if you have a mild case you can end up with breathing problems or pneumonia. Or, worse, if you are admitted to hospital you will be going alone and could die without your family being able to visit you.

Most people may recover but I think medical professionals should explain what it’s like to recover from pneumonia or series respiratory distress. That might encourage more people to respect the advice.

''None so deaf as those who will not hear''

namechangenumber2 · 21/03/2020 09:11

We don't intend on going out. We've got what we need and DS's both have games consoles and phones they can use to socialise with friends.

However I do think the way things have been wound down is confusing things, not that I don't agree with the way it's been done! But the way slowly things are stopped. For instance there was a major kick off on our local Facebook page last night. Someone complained about a group of children out on bikes at 5pm. There was a mix of parents saying but those are the same children who were together (in a bigger group) at school a couple of hours before - one last play out won't harm etc. Others were blaming those parents for the rise in cases/deaths and how it's criminal they were allowed out , it's the rule etc. I agree we all need to do this together ( I couldn't wait to get my boys home from school and batten down the hatches!) but I also do get the point of the parents that these children had been together just a couple of hours before and one last play won't harm.

It doesn't help that it got very nasty and personal Confused

awaynboilyurheid · 21/03/2020 09:16

Just listened to an Italian lady saying things Italy did wrong in this Coronavirus pandemic, one of them was letting our teenagers go out to meet each other as they were bored and we thought gaming all day or watching too much tv was bad for them They then brought CV home and we all passed it to elderly relatives which is one of the reasons death toll is so high.
