Is anyone here in the NE? (England)

What’s the situation? I was supposed to be going to a friend’s joint 40th in Newcastle this w/e. I’ve cancelled as I would of been going up by train from London. She says it’s all still going ahead, 60 guests though obviously some like me have dropped out. She says it’s more relaxed and they have fewer cases etc than in London.

No! Just no

QuestionMarkNow · 18/03/2020 19:58

I’m in the NE and I agree people are not as anxious and panicking (nit saying they are right or wrong btw)

Nit surprised that a party with 60 people is still going ahead. I was in York at the we and it was partying as usual in the Saturday evening. Restaurants were quieter though.

Now personally, I wouldn’t do it. There is the train, then the party. The area might be less affected so far than London but....

SaulBerenson · 18/03/2020 20:04

Oh I’m definitely not going btw, I was just interested to hear from people in the Ne.

That’s interesting about York though, I wonder if it’s the same in Newcastle city centre. They have a big nightlife there.

Things are getting cancelled now. I'm just outside Newcastle and venues are starting to close. A friends daughter just cancelled her 21st earlier today.

Puddlelane123 · 18/03/2020 21:37

This is why there needs to be government led enforced closure of social venues. It makes a mockery of social distancing and I find it hard to reconcile the fact that long awaited operations are being cancelled to free beds, schools are closing (which for some vulnerable children will be a loss of a vital lifeline) and all manner of other protective measures are happening whilst some people are merrily flouting the advice given to protect others. Not a criticism of you OP, but a general rant as the selfishness astounds me.

SaulBerenson · 18/03/2020 21:59

Tbh I agree with you Puddle, though I know different areas are in different stages so I was interested to hear from people actually up there.

I'm in Newcastle. We do have fewer cases. But remember testing has been slow and is estimated at many times more than the official numbers.

Also the measures the gov have introduced are a disaster for the economy an people's lives. Say what you want about the tories and they are awful. But I don't believe they would introduce the social distancing if not needed. Also lots of bars and restaurants are closing or just doing take out.

So not as bad a London. But not safe to carry on as normal.

Thanks for the info usery.

I know a couple of people in Newcastle who are positive but as they were diagnosed by paramedics who went to their home I doubt they are even in the official figure. I believe the figure is much higher. I would not be going anywhere with crowds at the moment.

SaulBerenson · 18/03/2020 22:46

How are they doing Boot? Are they otherwise healthy?

The wife is quite poorly, husband is still ok. He has been in close contact with her before they knew, so he is bracing the disease hitting him now.

IpeartreeI · 19/03/2020 01:14

I'm in NE England and we've all been ill with what we suspect is the virus.

A lot of people up here are not taking it seriously and some are openly rebellious about the restrictions. There has been some very bad behaviour in Tesco as well.

There's no testing within the community, so nobody knows how many cases there are really.

Deelish75 · 19/03/2020 06:06

My dad is North Yorks, he’s in his 70’s but very active and social, he says all his activities have been cancelled.

My cousin and family (teenagers) are self isolating - one of her dd’s has symptoms. (Also North Yorks )

TheGreatWave · 19/03/2020 07:23

It just seems all a bit surreal at the moment, this massive thing is happening but at the same time nothing is. I know they are not testing, but we have had no confirmed cases locally, even expanding over a wider area the rates are very low.

Chances are the event will be cancelled, but there is an element of 'what's all the fuss about?'

(Just being honest, before I get mauled)

NoNeedToBeRudeDear · 19/03/2020 08:00

I’m in County Durham. Think we’ve had one confirmed case so far.

People are definitely panic buying etc. My DM said there wasn’t any nappies, eggs, loo roll etc in Asda at 9am yesterday.

I have a couple of friends self isolating at the moment.

Events are getting cancelled. There’s a few things I had my eye on that now aren’t going ahead.

Fuckinellitsme · 19/03/2020 08:45

I'm in Newcastle. This was the city centre on Sunday afternoon. It's usually heaving. I was in yesterday (unavoidable) and it was much the same.

Fenwick has closed down as have many other shops. Yesterday there was a real sense of things winding down. Tesco was bare yet eerily quiet, as were a lot of other shops.

I'd like to say I can't believe parties are still going ahead but sadly, I can. When I came past my local on the bus yesterday it was packed.

I do kind of get it TheGreatWave.

Wow fuckinell that is quiet.

Horsemad · 19/03/2020 12:45

DS is at uni in Newcastle.

That's very strange to see fuckinell, it is usually packed with people! 😲

handslikecowstits · 19/03/2020 13:12

Very strange here in North Yorks. On the one hand the roads are quiet, buses are empty and most things have closed down or are in the process of closing down. AND THEN, you go to the supermarket and it's like fucking armageddon. Bizarre.

NoNeedToBeRudeDear · 19/03/2020 13:29

In Durham City Centre today and it is soooo quiet😳

Fuckinellitsme · 19/03/2020 13:31

@Horsemad DD is at uni here, too. Is your DD at Newcastle or Northumbria uni? DD is at Newcastle and they're now closed until the end of the academic year. They were told on Tuesday so that doesn't account for the quiet streets in Sunday - when the students go home it'll be even quieter.

Horsemad · 19/03/2020 13:43

Hi fuckinell, DS is at Newcastle. He's staying put in his house for now.

Fuckinellitsme · 19/03/2020 13:57

@Horsemad sorry, I meant to say DS, thanks autocorrect!

DD lives at home so thankfully is with us. It must be difficult for you having DS away Flowers
