What’s the situation? I was supposed to be going to a friend’s joint 40th in Newcastle this w/e. I’ve cancelled as I would of been going up by train from London. She says it’s all still going ahead, 60 guests though obviously some like me have dropped out. She says it’s more relaxed and they have fewer cases etc than in London.

I'm in the north East and my arse is in as much as possible. No way would I go OP.

Chances are the venue will cancel anyway.

SabrinaTheTeenageBitch · 19/03/2020 14:05

Im in Sunderland. We have very few cases (on record at least) but I still wouldn't class it as safe. We cancelled our five year olds party which absolutely broke my heart so Im really surprised a bunch of adults are still happy to go ahead with one. It may not be as bad up here but that doesnt mean it won't be. Not a chance I would be travelling anywhere right now

Horsemad · 19/03/2020 14:09

Thanks Fuckinell, he messages regularly, so we make the best of it. 🙂

Glassio · 19/03/2020 14:14

I'm in newcastle and know 3 now diagnosed cases all of which work in the nhs and have been kept working whilst contagious for the last week.. it's going to be everywhere and I cant believe the attitude that's allowed this to happen Sad we havent even seen the start of it yet.

Horsemad · 19/03/2020 14:18

God Almighty Glassio, that's awful! It's one thing working whilst not knowing you've caught it but quite another to knowingly have people working whilst contagious.

Fuckinellitsme · 19/03/2020 14:50

@Glassio I saw on the BBC yesterday I think that the NHS wasn't testing its employees, so they had no idea whether or not they were potentially infecting others. I think we have 13 diagnosed cares here - 5 had recently returned from areas badly affected and most of the others were connected to them.

I'm honestly not being goady but surely the NHS wouldn't allow confirmed cases to carry in working with the public? Are they frontline staff?

Glassio · 19/03/2020 15:27

My 3 are Physios but of serious cases heart attacks/strokes etc. They finally sent 1home but even then their husband was told to continue working (same line of work) even though he would clearly have it by living with the confirmed case.

SaulBerenson · 19/03/2020 16:41

That doesn’t sound good Glassio Sad

Durham City Centre was quite busy on Tuesday and the arnison centre car park almost full, this morning.

I suspect that most people actually in the centre were ghouling around the cordon on North Road, as there had been a stabbing behind the bus station.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 19/03/2020 16:58

@Fuckinellitsme @Horsemad DS at Newcastle as well. Slogging through his dissertation- lecturer supervisor has been on strike so it’s been stressful. He came out of library Tuesday and went to supermarket for the first time in a few days and said he felt sick- nothing on the shelves. So the panic is creeping up there- just more slowly. They have now shut library so he is coming home tomorrow. Such sad times

SaulBerenson · 19/03/2020 17:47

Does he have to travel far to get home mumsie?

OP posts:
Dowser · 19/03/2020 19:25

Went into town today for holland and Barrett and some essentials.
It was fairly busy.
No one wore masks
Costa and macdonalds closed and the public toilets.
Cinema also closed.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 19/03/2020 20:52

@SaulBerenson sadly yes-about 5 hour drive.

I will relax a bit when he is home. It's surreal isn't it?

SaulBerenson · 19/03/2020 21:21

It is mumsie. Wishing him a safe trip home.

Horsemad · 19/03/2020 21:46

@mumsiedarlingrevolta, mine is still after staying there! He too is doing his diss - what subject is your DS studying?

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 19/03/2020 22:10

@Horsemad He is doing biology/nutrition. What is your DC doing? Has he got exams/extension on diss?

they have had such torrid times with the strikes and now closures and it is such a sad way to end a brilliant Newcastle experience but all over the country it's the same.

it is bloody madness

Horsemad · 19/03/2020 23:12

It definitely is madness.

He's doing History, he has an exam in May but he hasn't mentioned an extension on his diss.

QuestionableMouse · 19/03/2020 23:20

Sunderland is bloody weird right now. Roads are quiet but the shops are heaving.

I have to go out to get shopping tomorrow but apart from that I'm staying in as much as I can.

I'd stay home and not risk it personally.

QuestionableMouse · 19/03/2020 23:22

They're also closing one campus at my uni, work is running with a skeleton staff and cinemas and museums are closing.

There's a chance that you'd get up here and not be able to get home.

ethelredonagoodday · 19/03/2020 23:27

I'm
In york and lots have restaurants have announced closures today and yesterday...

minimummum · 19/03/2020 23:27

Stay home and stay safe.
I am in County Durham. Places are starting to close. The only busy places are supermarkets with people panic buying.
