How do you work out a workout routine?

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 16/03/2020 10:59

I've just joined the gym, literally, about 15 minutes ago. I've never stepped foot in a gym or done any sort of exercise at all, ever. It just occurred to me that I don't have a clue how to workout Confused I don't mean how to use the machines (I'm having my induction later..), but how do you know how to work out a routine?

I hope this makes sense Confused

The gym will often have the facility to plan a work out for you based on your goals.
I like to use the bodybuilding uk website. There is a search bar and if you type fully body workout if gives you some plans to follow or you can work out by part of the body
I like to use the rower to warm up, that's full body and great cardio too. You really cant go wrong with squats and lunges in various forms for good leg and glute strength and toning (and add in weight as you gain strength). Always focus on form and do a few warm up squats etc without any weight to warm up muscles.
There are lots of exercises out there and so much variety. Maybe do a plan or two and swap them around? I keep a note book and often pick a routine I've done before to mix it up.

When they give you your induction, they should give you a schedule to follow. Do this a few times, until you get used to the machines/ weights etc, then you can tweak it to suit you. Loads of good ideas on YouTube

HebeMumsnet · 16/03/2020 11:10

Yeah, ask whoever does your induction to write down a few ideas for you. Once you get sick of doing that you can usually pay for a one-to-one session with an instructor to give you some new workouts. There are loads online but if you can afford the occasional one-to-one session that will be tailored to you and you can talk about exactly what you want to achieve etc.

Do they do classes too?

I have the odd PT session just so that I get new exercises and ides
I like to mix it up so may do 2 gym workouts with a body combat class and a 5k run in the week

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 16/03/2020 12:14

It's an Everyone Active gym, they do lots of classes, loads and loads of spin class specifically Confused there's a virtual spin class every hour of every day as far as I can tell! The woman who signed me up said they do 3 PT sessions for £35 so it might be worth doing that occasionally, because I haven't a clue.

Does anyone take a small bag in with them? I don't mean a gym bag but just something small to hold tissues and my inhaler and locker key.

Definitely make use of the PT sessions, but ask them to write you a full body programme that you can use on your own. PT sessions where someone trains you for say an hour 1-1 are great but pricey as they will try and get you buy a block. They should still show you the machines and the correct form and technique to get you started. If they offer circuit training, HIIT style classes, go to them as the often incorporate exercises you can take away and work on alone.

I use a make up size bag for my phone, headphones, swipe card etc. If you are particularly sweaty, a microfibre towel is useful, not least to wipe down the machine after use. Also remember a water bottle!

3 PT sessions for £35

Good PTs will charge that for an hour of 121 training easily.
Are you sure that isn't 3 sessions at £35 each (a small discount from a one-off price) - not £35 for 3 hours of PT?

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 16/03/2020 13:01

Basically, workouts go: stretch, warm up, strength, aerobic, warm down, stretch, Mars bar.

MozzchopsThirty · 16/03/2020 14:53

@buzz not always

My PT does a special rate as I'm a lone parent and long time gym member
He charges me £20 an hour for 1:1 PT
He's amazing, does nutrition, weight training and boxing with me

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 17/03/2020 09:43

That's a great rate - but even so, that still would be £60 for 3 hours. I just don't want OP to think she's got a bargain and end up paying 3 times as much as she expected

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 17/03/2020 10:16

She definitely said "We also offer 3 personal training sessions for £35." Maybe she meant that it's just a one-off offer for new people?
