Has anyone had to have their wedding ring cut off?

I'm feeling a bit stupid. Took my wedding and engagement rings off when I was pregnant with DS(2) and should have got them resized before I put them back on. I'm not sure what stopped me (vanity, lack of time, whatever) but now they're on and they won't budge. Tried everything: elevation, ice, oil, that ribbon trick where you wind the ribbon round your finger and unravel it. My finger is more swollen than usual now and I'm trying not to panic! Blush

Talked myself out of going to the fire station round the corner and will wait for a jewellers to open on Monday morning. Why do these things always happen at the weekend when you have to wait for things to open??

DH is sitting up with me because I can't sleep for thinking about it. He was a bit bemused by me before bed but now he's showing a bit more concern. Still feel stupid!

Have you tried properly freezing your whole body. Like get in a cold bath, ice your finger then apply a baby oil or something to twist it off.

HypatiaCade · 15/03/2020 05:01

I did. It was really simple and fast. The gadget the jewellers have really is great.

StylishDuck · 15/03/2020 05:03

@Yamaya Tbf I haven't put my whole body in a cold bath... but I have sat with my hand in a basin of ice cold water for as long as I can bear it, then tried olive oil. There's no way my finger is going down enough to get it off.

same thing happened me and my husband snipped them open with a pliers . You could try that if you have one ?

StylishDuck · 15/03/2020 05:05

@HypatiaCade Thanks, that's reassuring. I'm less upset now about my rings being cut, I just want to bloody things off. I figure if a jeweller cuts them then there's more chance of them being able to repair and resize them.

@naturallydelicious My husband is fairly cackhanded, bless him. I'm not sure either of us trust him to do that without cutting my actual finger off Grin

Leave the rings alone or the swelling will get worse, then go to the jewellers. Takes seconds for them to remove them.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 15/03/2020 05:19

I had to have mine removed when I broke my wrist. The hospital used dental floss. I’ve heard glass cleaner (called Windex here) recommended by jewellers to do the trick.

Farheatarse · 15/03/2020 05:20

My mum did when she got stung by a bee and her finger swelled up

My dad did it with a hacksaw..

Not the recommended approach...

Discoballs · 15/03/2020 05:25

My wedding ring hasn't been able to come off since I was about 6 months pregnant. My baby is 4 months old now. I just leave it where it is. Is yours cutting off the circulation or something? Otherwise I'd just ignore it. You're probably making it worse by panicking.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 15/03/2020 05:25

I hope they aren’t so tight you’ll lose not only the rings but a finger after so long without circulation 😓

TravellingSpoon · 15/03/2020 07:39

I had to have my eternity ring cut off a few years ago. Jeweller did it and then repaired it for me for about £60 to make it slightly bigger.

TeddyIsaHe · 15/03/2020 07:45

Mum had to have hers cut off when the dog broke her finger (holding collar to stop him eating a rotting pigeon corpse and he twisted round).

Dad bought a ring cutter thing from the hardware store and got it off. The jewellers fixed and resized it and you can’t tell unless you’re really looking.

JellyfishandShells · 15/03/2020 07:45

My DH cut mine off with some small sharp nosed pliers - cheap ring with a D profile , I made sure I replaced it later with a court fitting.

Littlepond · 15/03/2020 07:47

Yes I did in pregnancy. Jewellers have a cool tool which is super easy and quick. Got it repaired and you’d never know.

SephrinaX · 15/03/2020 07:50

Had to get mine cut off near the end of first pregnancy. Better to wait and get a jeweller to cut it off if you can. Hospital can do it but it will be a neater job if the jeweller does it! Takes only a few seconds.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 15/03/2020 07:51

My mum had hers cut off by a jeweler. The pliers didn't work as it was quite a thick ring so they used a manual teeny tiny circular saw. Did the job, but took ages as the ring kept hearing up!
I took mine off about a year ago as fibromyalgia was causing some overnight swelling. Glad I left my rings off as recently my left hand has gone very puffy.

thatgingergirl · 15/03/2020 09:02

I had my wedding and engagement rings cut off at hospital following a fall. I had them repaired and they're fine, but they both lost the hallmark in the process. I hope it doesn't affect the value of them for DD when I'm gone!

Serenschintte · 15/03/2020 09:05

Yes, I went to a jewelers and they did it for me. Didn’t hurt at all.
Then I had them resized when finger swelling had gone down.

christmassausages · 15/03/2020 09:14

You need to use dental floss and really pull against the ring as you unwind the floss. It will be sore though.

gassylady · 15/03/2020 09:19

Another one popping by to say dental floss. Ice and elevate first then wrap the dental floss around whilst finger is still up in the air. Good luck - used to be one of my favourite jobs in A&E

alexasaymyname · 15/03/2020 09:48

If it's really painful and the finger is swelling, A&e have ring cutters. If it's not actually interfering with the circulation just leave it be and the swelling will go down. I'm assuming it's all the pulling which has caused the finger to swell?

StylishDuck · 15/03/2020 10:45

It is swollen (I'll see if I can post a picture) but I suspect it is to do with the fact I have been trying to get it off. It's not been this bad up until now. I'm thinking I can wait until tomorrow morning to get to a jewellers. I definitely don't want to be bothering A&E with this given how busy they'll be at the moment.

Go to hospital! I nearly lost my finger due to doing this, the doctor had to cut them off!

Darlingsleepthief · 15/03/2020 10:47

The doc said I was minutes away from loosing my finger, honestly I would go now!
