Do you keep cash in the house?

If so, do you have a safe or is it squirrelled away under a floorboards?

As real spread there! I think im going to stash a few hundred pounds for emergencies.

With a bit of luck I'll forget about it and find it in a year's time!

How is cash going to help me if no ATMs in London are working. If we get to that point there won't be anything to buy or sell surely.

I didn't realise this was yet another prepping thread.

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/03/2020 13:24

can't understand people saying they never have encountered situations where they need cash.
Even places I commonly pay on a card, have had times where their card machine isn't working for one reason or another

But if your cash is at home how will that help you.

I have never really carried cash.
Not since the 80s

I have never had cash in the house and never come across any of the situations where I would need cash.

Everything goes on my card that way I have a complete record of my spending

DoubleAction · 15/03/2020 13:34

I did send DH to the cash point for a little stash yesterday actually.

I'm not really sure why. If we did get to ti a stage where cash was needed like this, a little stash will be nowhere near enough.

I wonder of there's been a run on cash points this weekend too?

Babybel90 · 15/03/2020 13:35

I pay for everything on my Tesco credit card to collect all those lovely club card points. The only time I’ve needed cash was when I got my nails done in a local salon and their card machine was down, I went to the ATM across the road and, that was also down, so I ended up leaving my driving licence with them as security until I could go back later that afternoon and pay them.

Purpletigers · 15/03/2020 13:47

Yes

Nonnymum · 15/03/2020 13:49

Only what's in our wallets ans that isn't much. Why would you need to? You don't need cash for many things these days anyway

BackforGood · 15/03/2020 14:06

Well, when I'm out and about I'll always have £10 - 25 in my purse which will cover most purchases (like last week when the wifi wasn't working in the cafe I had my dinner in), and about 3 months ago when the card machine wasn't working in the garage, they told me that when they phoned me to say the car was ready - or it might have been when I dropped it off in the morning - either way, it was fine as I always have some cash in the house.

Oliversmumsarmy · 16/03/2020 02:00

Maybe I live in an area that has working Wifi.
I have never had a card machine fail on me.

Also I have no where to put money when I am out. I don’t own a purse.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/03/2020 05:49

It's not just the signal, but the system.

Several banks or the card payment systems have had failures that I can remember. Sometimes fairly widespread for a day or two or more.

gamerchick · 16/03/2020 08:50

That's a really nieve attitude. I guess it is true that some people won't be told and have to learn lessons for themselves Grin

yet...

We are living in extraordinary times.

Yogawoogie · 16/03/2020 10:44

Only have foreign currency at home.
Although this thread has made me think so I might withdraw £100 cash.

Pinkyyy · 16/03/2020 11:08

I keep all my savings in cash, in a safe.

listsandbudgets · 16/03/2020 11:20

Yes, probably about £250 squirreled away

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/03/2020 12:22

Aren’t shops now only taking card because money is unhygienic

RishiSunakFanClub · 17/03/2020 17:55

Oliversmumsarmy Their choice I guess but if so those shops will lose my business as I mostly pay in cash. They say most banknotes have traces of cocaine on them - you could get high if you licked enough of them which is more than you can do with a card Grin

Oliversmumsarmy · 18/03/2020 09:43

RishiSunakFanClub

Noticed a particular local supermarket only taking card now.

It could be because the machines were faulty but not one self service check out was taking cash and the normal tills weren’t open

lachy · 18/03/2020 11:58

We've got piles of change around the house (DH I'm looking at you Hmm), random bits of foreign currency, but we do have a couple of hundred quid hidden because DH is happier to have some ready in a crisis.
