Do you keep cash in the house?

If so, do you have a safe or is it squirrelled away under a floorboards?

always have a couple of grand in cash sterling and also a grand r so in euros

HardWorkShy · 14/03/2020 11:04

Usually have a couple hundred stashed.

Alsohuman · 14/03/2020 11:09

I only ever use cash for parking, the last time I drew any out was August! Even the window cleaner’s paid by bank transfer.

TravellingSpoon · 14/03/2020 12:51

I dont keep cash intentionally, but I have a couple of sealed tins of cash I could raid if I need it, and the kids have their piggy banks.

pumpkinpie01 · 14/03/2020 13:10

My DH saves £10 a week without fail in a tin for his 'hobby ' in October so depending on what time of the year it is there can be quite a bit in there. I also have a sealed tin that I try and put £50 a month in for the summer holidays. They aren't on show but if we go away for the weekend then they are very well hidden.

SilverySurfer · 14/03/2020 13:23

Yes.

AnneJeanne · 14/03/2020 13:27

We keep a few hundred in a bag with our passports.

Trumpspeach · 14/03/2020 13:30

Got £100 stashed away.

SlayingDragons · 14/03/2020 13:36

Literally nothing! I am terrible for carrying cash and I certainly don’t keep a stash in the house. I still use cheques for DC’s activities or school things if online payments aren’t available. Everything else is online or using cards. DD1 needed money for school this week - she got £5 sponsorship which I found in my purse and then needed £2 for something else and I had to take the trolley pound out of the car to get to £2 Blush. She cleaned me out.

MauriceandAlec · 14/03/2020 13:38

I never have cash on me. My wife is older than I am and keeps about £200 in cash in the house in various drawers and cupboards. I think it's weird.

Brahumbug · 14/03/2020 14:11

We have £500 in the house in the safe, for possible emergencies. I carry cash as well as cards, but I love car boot sales, who generally want cash Grin

viccat · 14/03/2020 14:20

Only about £30-50, mainly in case I needed a taxi in an emergency. Probably not as important these days with all the taxi apps and Uber that let you pay by card.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/03/2020 14:34

I've got a £5 ripped in half

Thassit 🤷‍♀️

ParkheadParadise · 14/03/2020 14:41

Yes
We keep cash locked in the safe. I also have about £100 in a jar. Everytime DH empties his pockets and leaves cash lying about i lift it and it goes in the jar.

bemoreeverything · 14/03/2020 14:50

I regularly have up to £500 on my coffee table beside me. Currently there is £155 buried in amongst various letters, a box of plasters, my medication and Alexa.

I get paid in cash though, so tend to chuck it on the table and lift some as and when I need it.

I also have a slightly messy table Grin

TheChosenTwo · 14/03/2020 15:20

About £1000 in a safe and £100 in a jar in the kitchen of a sort of household float I suppose, useful for all of us. Constantly using it for things like taxi fares, popping to the shop for a couple of bits (if I’m sending the dc), money for various school days (comic relief, dressing up days, PTA events), that sort of thing. And then a tenner in coins in the ashtray of the car for parking, not all places use apps to pay for parking as I found out this week Grin

hannabarbera · 14/03/2020 15:24

Always. Nearest cash point is 3 miles away. Prefer to buy things with cash. Stops the bank being nosy with where im spending my money.

lowlandLucky · 14/03/2020 15:26

If you have no cash in the house where do you keep your escape fund ? I have a large escape found for my DD in the house and a few of hundred just in case we broken are into ( i know) but as we are rural i think if someone gets in and demands money i can give them that and they wont find the large amount i have hidden

Alsohuman · 14/03/2020 15:36

My escape fund, in the very unlikely event I’d need one, is in my building society account.

simbobs · 14/03/2020 15:36

If I get £50 out of a cash machine it can last months. I seldom use it at all. All bills are paid by Direct debit, trades paid by bank transfer, shopping and car parking paid by card or app. It feels weird not having any cash at all which is why I get some out occasionally, but I never keep any in the house other than whatever is in my purse. OH is the same.

mencken · 14/03/2020 16:14

for the 'too cool for cash' brigade:

your brickphones don't hold charge and you could be left with a flat phone so can't pay on crapple or any of the other systems
bank networks go down around monthly. If it is your bank, no money
late night taxis to hospitals demand cash (I know) or they'll take you to a cash machine which will slow you down.

so go on, be a little less cool and a little less stupid and have £50 tucked away. That's well within house insurance limits.

or don't blubber if it goes titsup, because it will serve you right.

caringcarer · 14/03/2020 16:19

We have about 1k in safe and a couple of hundred around house and 8000 euros in safe also and a few hundred dollars left over from holidays.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/03/2020 16:26

Not a lot. I always keep about £100 in cash in a tin. Proved useful this week when I lost my bank card and had to wait 3-5 working days for a replacement, meant I could do a food shop without stressing.

Whydoesit · 14/03/2020 16:30

If you have no cash in the house where do you keep your escape fund ?

What do you mean? Money you’d need access to if you needed to leave your husband?

I have money in a bank if that’s what you mean.

Cash in case of apocalypse etc - none generally, although my DH often has £20 on him. So we’d be fine for about 5 hours.

SilverySurfer · 14/03/2020 16:30

I have 2 tins in two different locations. As someone said, hand over the much lesser amount in one tin to a burglar in the hope he won't look elsewhere.

I don't understand not having or using cash and doubt I will change the habit of a (long) lifetime.
